So whats up with the graphics?

It looks like some textures are missing from this beta..  anyone know anything?

The ground, rocks, during quest talk scenes...  everything seems dull, flat color, no detail...  even WOW had detail.

It's because environmental effects seem to be completely missing!

No volumentric lighting effects. No fog. No day/night cycles. No rain. No snow. No wind/storms.

As far as I know, Hero Engine supports all this!  So I am totally baffled as to why Bioware isn't using it?? !!

Sad but true... it makes the environments/zones in WoW look way better. /sigh

Take it for what it is worth, but I read somewhere on the Swtor forums that the current beta this weekend is 6-7 builds old? I have no idea if this is true but perhaps that is the issue? I noticed the graphic hitches too, missing textures and overally fuzzy look to things at times. Rumor has it that they look pretty good on ultra with AA running.

i was able to talk to this one guy who was streaming his beta access game play and i had to ask him why the game looks that bad, and he mentioned that in beta, you cant put the full graphics on yet... i hope his right since the game looks like jedi knight outcast that came out like decade ago >_____<

Rain and Lightning exist as i've seen both, Snow i have no idea since i haven't been any of the two Snow planets yet.

I think someone said they didn't enable all the graphic options for this beta so i wouldn't assume that this is how the game really looks.

I just remembered. There's sandstorms on Tatooine. And they kill you if you get stuck in the middle of one. They knock you off your mount too. boom

the thunder and lightning on DK is pretty loud and sounds awesome.

I find this very hard to believe. Especially right now when so many people are getting a first impression of the game!

They basically got almost all their pre-order customers trying out this game this weekend!

So if anything would have been important in this weekend, is to show off the capabilities of this game to the MAX!

And sure... bla bla bla.... it's a stress test weekend. We all know that!  But we also all know darn well that everyone uses this weekend to get a first glance at the game and form their opinions!

Wow someone says WoW looks better than this game.... rofl

omg people, yeah I like the game and yes I will defend the game against non sense because not liking a game is completely fine but people who obviously have no idea what they're talking about saying a game looks 7 years old are just trolls, plain and simple... Graphically this game beats AoC.

    http://www.youtube.com/user/logun24x7#p/u/3/OskRij8AYaU

and yes they have features turned off for this stress test... This is a widely known fact, if realistic weathering is one of these features... who knows? Look at AoC though... 2-3 graphical overhaults/updates since launch, graphics are the easiest thing to change and update, the games core mechanics are far more important at this point.

Everything I say is my opinion or personal preference. You may or may not find it useful to your cause but regardless I am entitled to it.

There are posts about availability of graphics options for instance AI is not available at the moment for beta i'd take it with a pinch of salt this is a stress test of server loads and to get a feel for the amount of servesr needed at lauchn to maintain high population on servers while reducing que times and ensuring there are very few if any at all low pop servers :)

all will come in time guys try to not be so hyper critical of things until we see release it is only a stress test weekend and getting a feel for game features

You haven't played the game then because most people rag on the characters and say the environments are amazing.

Thank god I thougt it was just me - very 'plastic' graphics as someone else once said.  I have everything maxed and even turned AA on via the graphics card but there seems to be no detail or depth.  I don't understand graphic terminology but I would describe it as flat and lacking detail.

Add that to all the dead NPC bodies levitating off the slightest bump and it all looks rather poor.  Fair enough for an old game, a FTP game but I expected something better than merely 'ok'.

This game is the very defination of 'ok'.

I don't really care what other people say.  For me characters are ok and everything else is awful.

    I am playing beta atm.

Interesting logic btw, becasue I have diffrent opinion than other people complaining then I don't played Swtor? lol wth? u mad?

I was completely unimpressed with the graphics overall. I didn't get a chance to play that long, but from what I saw, with the lack of effects, high-res textures (seriously, some of the textures are straight out of 1998, it was actually quite shocking), lighting, shadows, etc, etc.

Looking at some of the terrain textures is really jarring, it would garner the same effect if they just painted textures in a single matte color. Most of the 'armor' and clothing is treated in the same regard as the terrain. I don't have much issue with the character models, the facial features and styling is on-par with other games and gets the job done.

If I could sum up the "the graphics" in about one word or more, it would be: Low-res, or Unoptimized.

Everything else.. well, the dialogue trees are nice, but we've seen it all before in Bioware's other games. I enjoyed it, but I realized "Once it's done, it's done", and what will be left over when I get tired of the inevitable "going nowhere" dialogues? Well, we're left with basically a mainstream MMO clone that we have all seen for 10 years now. Kill this, kill that, fetch me this, fetch him that, then wear this outfit that the whole server will be wearing at the same time.

Worth $60? Probably. It's perfectly capable of passing the time to get your money's worth. It's just so underwhelming, with the supposed "huge budget" and high-stakes development we've heard oh so much about.

my guess is that with this being the final test before launch, they are only really concerned with testing the backbone and used an older build with low textures due to download size with the increased amount of invites this makes downloading the game even possible at this point

    Hundreds of millions.

    The colossal EA/Bioware pairing.

In other words, the "make it or break it, how are new MMO studios going to convince investors to invest if this one drowns", high-stakes.

That's possible. The game is much smaller this time around. About 8 gigs smaller.

That is possible, but I highly doubt it. I've seen dozens and dozens of betas/releases and this is always said. "Wait for beta", then "Wait for some updates".

Anything is possible, and I'll withhold my judgment for when it goes gold. I'm not that bitter, but I'm not keeping any expectations either.

its how its been with alot of betas, take battlefield 3 for example, im not much of a fan of swtor but im sure its gotta look better than this

    Don't get your hopes up.

I have been in so many MMO betas.... lost count. What you see now this close to release, is how it will be three weeks from now, when Early Access starts.

Why would they make their game look bad on purpose this close to release?

    I noticed that too....

On top of that AA and FA cant be set inside the game, and you need your grpahics cards driver to force to use them.  Then the core graphics are allright.

They went with the Saturday morning cartoon look.  The character graphics look kind of flat and plastic on my 26 inch monitor at 1920 by 1200.  Maybe they would look better on a smaller monitor, but the character textures are a bit plain, too smooth.  It really does remind me of COH or DCUO or one of those super hero games in its aesthetics.

Star Wars maybe should be darker, grittier, more atmospheric and...dangerous.

The character models themselves are ok although I wish there were more options.  They just need to have textures which are not so featureless and flat.  The clothign so far appears molded over their bodies.

One thing that bugs me is the male characters crotch.  LOL.  There I said it.  It's so smooth and there is nothing there.  They can't have atleast a small package?  Cause right now the guys crotches look like a girls.

    Then look at SWTOR.

Same style, just updated to modern standards.
