Hi,

I wanted to play an mmo serious for some time but I didn't know whitch one! So I needed to form an opinion.

After months of trying out, testing, reading reviews, talking asking, meddling, viewing screens, watching movies, reading faqs and bottering people to play with their account I finally managed to narrow it down... image

For me the coice is between 3 mmo's right now:
-World of Warcraft
-Guild Wars
-Eve-Online

I'm more inclined to play eve because I'm a huge sci-fi fan. But on the other hand World of Warcraft boasts more players than eve. But then again Guild Wars feature guild wars (du'h!) in which I'm very interested as I am really social but on the other hand war-lovingimage.

My profile: trader, social, non-agressive, megalomanic, strategic genious, hard-tempered, steady nerves, persistent, too much principals, a litlle too serious, roleplayer, empirebuilder, going all the way always...

So what would you advice to be my sort of game?
I don't care about the costs or the time I spend on it (min 2hours/day).

While your at it what kind of character (race, class, ...) would fit my acording to you? And why? Just to be extra sureimage.

I'm posting this in general discussion and in the mmorpg.com forums of wow, gw and eve just to get the broader perspective.

TNX!

    Of those three?

    EVE

It's got the most depth of the three. The best graphics of the three and the best PVP of the three.

Not to dissagree with El, he makes a really good point about Eve and he has a lot more experience with MMO's then I do but IMO, out of those 3, you might be best served going with WoW. It's really really easy to get into, fun to look at, play and if you pick a decent server the community is ok (if not down right fun to read). The reason I would suggest WoW isn't that it's better then the games you listed, it's just that it would give you a good base to work off of, get to know how MMO's work, crafting, fighting, economy's and the such. It's basically a traditional MMO droped in complexity for a broader audience. Just don't don't expect to be there for long as most people will attest to, it's gets dull after some time. Go into it knowing that and you'll have a good time I would imagine.

But I'm curious, why havn't you considered SWG ? I don't play it anymore for many reasons, but considering what you wrote in your original post it seems like a good place for you to start. It's fairly easy to get into, fun at times, lots of people, good crafting (well used to be, a little less fun now to craft), good pvp and seems to fit your personality type. Well anyways, no big deal, just if you havn't considered it, you might want to take a look.

    Best wishes. image

I dunno... WoW doesn't fit his profile at all... I didn't want to suggest SWG because someone would start accusing me of being an SOE employee again LOL...

EVE and SWG do fit the profile he posted very well. Guildwars is not all it's cracked up to be and certainly isn't for empire builders, crafters, traders or about 90% of the other things he lists in his profile. It's ok as a 'when I'm bored' game but if you're a serious gamer you will quickly tire of it. IMO. I cant stand it personally...

WoW is an easy MMO to learn but I won't go much further than it's easy to learn, easy to level and has good graphics. Other than that I found it about 'average' in most areas. It's nice for casual play. I don't play it because I have the SOE all Access Pass so I get to play EQ2 if I get massochistic and decide to play a Fantasy game which is, imo, pretty much just as good, and will possibly be better than WoW once they add PVP which rumors say is coming soon.

If you spend most of your day playing one game I would strongly suggest not playing EVE online. It is a great game, but the way the skills system is setup can really discourage people who play a lot. Before I quit I was playing EVE and just chatting while waiting for my skills to finish so I could get into some non-suicidal PvP.

Incase you didn't know, EVE has a skill system where you pick a skill to train, wait X hours, X minutes, X seconds, and you will have that skill. It can really get tedious while waiting for skills.

Then again, I'm impatient, but I don't think waiting 2 weeks to be able to fly a ship that isn't even competitive is fun.

After reading your little profile there I would Suggest Star Wars Galaxies.

Its Sci-Fi, very social, you can build mini guild empires even cities, has PvP sometimes on a grand scale of rebel vs imps.

WoW, is not a social game at all unless you find and join a social guild (Rare in WoW), or maybe play only on a RP server?

I personally found EvE extreamly monotonious, the learning curve and time it takes to get to the good stuff was much to long IMO, and not worth it.

Guild wars is not really a MMORPG, and acually you could play it and a reall MMORPG at the same time as it has no monthly fee. But again, IMO it gets repiditive fast.

If you wanna have fun immediately but don't mind getting bored after a few months, try WoW. Its really great for the first little while. It really doesn't have much depth tho. Crafting in WoW sucks. PvP doesn't really mean anything. Quests get repetative (some are fun, most are boring and pointless except for the exp gained).

EVE is pretty neat. Considering it will take you a couple months to get enough skills and/or isk to be even remotely competative in PvP, I'd say it's more of a long-term game :S

I really don't agree with this.

You can do other things while your skills are training, of course. The problem is that most people are used to MMOs where the skill advancement is tied to what you are doing, which is not the case in EVE. So people feel like there is nothing to do because what they are doing does not relate to the skill training ... both happen on different but parallel tracks. Honestly among all of the various MMOs I have played, EVE has offered the most variety of what I can do in any gaming session: I can trade, I can mine, I can manufacture, I can bounty hunt, I can run missions, I can PvP, I can roleplay ... and I can do any of it without worrying about whatever I am doing messing up my skill training.

The EVE skill training system is a source of annoyance principally for players who feel that their skill advancement should be directly dependent on the time they are logged into the game -- that's it. Of course there are plenty of other ways a player who plays more often has advantages over those who play less often (money, standing, actual playing expertise), but NOT skill progression, and for players who are used to the vast majority of MMOs that dertermine skill progression based on time spent playing, that's hard to swallow.

Oh well. As I've said elsewhere, EVE is a very hot and cold type game ... you seem either really to like it or you really don't. It's worth a try, IMO, to see which category of person you fall into! :-)

EVE has a free trial, just play it. http://www.mmorpg.com/eve_trial.cfm. I don't think any of the others do. I'm on my 9 day of the free trial and I'm loving it. I'll probably be subscribing at the end.

A bit of forwarning about Eve. Eve's universe is a combat PvPer's sandbox. There is no place in Eve, except docking in station, where you can get killed, ganked, scamed, ransomed (rare these days), or griefed. If you've already researched it then you know trading in Eve is the best bar none...but the trading comes with real risk. You can easily lose weeks, even months, worth of work to a noob or to a player that simply doesn't like how you spell your name. It may not seem fair and it may suck balls, but once your ship leaves station you are fair game.

Do not choose WoW, 1-50 is fun sure, but after that there is absolutely nothing to do. You auta wait untill the Asheron's call Expansion comes out and try that. That is my fav game, but people quit the original so i ended up following them. But i wouldn't miss this expansion for anything. Plus the WoW PvP is horrible, i have 2 lvl 60s and the game just gets boring.

well i think that every (ok... most) MMORPG is getting harder and harder after specific lvl reached... u r seekin only for mobs which can give u nice XP so u forget all others... and it's naturally harder to gain new lvl by killin just those creatures... that's the point where the game gets boring and it's time for PvP ::::24:: but some MMORPGs might save the situation by adding quests meant for high lvls that can make the game playable again...
and to ur chosen games... i'd suggest SWG due to ur profile... u said u like sci-fi and wars ::::02:: cmon there's no better choice ::::35::
but i have to confess... i've never played SWG cuz i can't afford it but im SW fan ::::28::
(i can't afford it cuz im not from the US or so and my parents'd go mad if i started to pay for a game::::21::)

It's a bit of an overstatement. In theory you can be attacked anywhere, but in reality EVE follows a security system such that (a) in systems 0.5 and above any aggression is met with a response by CONCORD, the galactic police (meaning CONCORD blows up the aggressor .. if a player manages to get away from CONCORD in these situations, CCP considers that an exploit and will take action if petitioned), (b) in systems 0.1 to 0.4 any aggression around the stations or the gates will be met with a response by CONCORD (and the severity of the response declines as the security level declines, so in 0.1 and 0.2 a clever group of pirate players can defeat the CONCORD sentry guns and that is NOT considered an exploit) but aggression elsewhere, like in asteroid belts, is fair game and (c) in 0.0 everything is fair game.

So unless you are in a corp that is in a CONCORD registered war with another corp (in which case the warring parties can attack anywhere without a response from CONCORD), you're remarkably safe in 0.5 and above for the most part. If you are a player who knows where he is going, and makes sure the route is all 0.5 and above, the likelihood of you being attacked by another player is virtually nil.

As I said in your cross post on the EvE board.

This is what makes eve stand out from the rest.

You said it in your post, you are scifi oriented... go with Eve.  GW and WoW are fantasy based.   Go with your gut.

From your 3 choices EVE is the best by FAR

WOW is fan for a while, but is not a game for long time (as you are looking for). It is the worst PVP of the three. The only think you can do is to kill mobs or quests (killing more mobs) and it is not deep at all from the professions point of view.

GW is better than WOW in PVP and is deeper in professions. But ...

EVE is extremely deep (infinite in fact) and really fan in PVP. It is a game to play during years.

I know it because I started playing WoW. After 3 months i left it and I went to GW, and now I am playing EVE and GW from time to time (as it is free it make sence image)

I have a profile similar to you and I tried those 3 games.

I would suggest you try EVE and see how you like it. I believe there is a 15 days free trial.

Guild Wars is also a nice game if you like PvP a lot.

I would forget World of Warcraft.

LOL I would recommend WoW over GW any day of the week. And I don't even think WoW is all that great. And NEITHER of them hold a candle to EVE.
