Jef Reahard did an early look article about Dawntide on Massively.com's "Some Assembly Required" series.

Overall, I believe it's pretty fair. The game has a lot of potential, and the roadmap looks well conceived, but right now much of the planned game isn't implemented yet, or doesn't work perfectly.

Well, yes, Rohn, you're absolutely correct there. And it's a small indie effort, so it's going to take even longer to get everything right. We may never see it release at all. But that's the price we pay for wanting something that doesn't follow the current "story-driven" (I'm trying to be kind) formula.
I'm going to try and hang with these guys for a bit, at least until GW2 arrives some time next year. Dawntide has that old-school UO/pre-CU SWG/Horizons feel to it for which I've been yearning ever since the NGE. I've sufferred through the trials of indie development enough times to know what to expect, both the good and the bad. I'm looking forward to having a sandbox to play in again. I like those kinds of games best, and this one does take the UO model of character development and add in some of the SWG elements that expanded the concept.
I hope that navigating the ships is a bit smoother than UO's, though. O_O
