I'd like to add that the vocal minority never really surprises me. They just become more vocal over time.
I can't wait until this game comes out to see what they freak out about next.
This!
One really needs to remember that less than 5% of a games population even READS the boards, much less posts. For the most part - those satisfied with their experience never say anything. It's only those that still (mistakenly) believe that the 'squeeky wheel gets the grease' that are really vocal.

I was expecting the game to be a downright bore, because honestly lately Bioware seem to have been going down that road to me, and I wasn't digging the visual style or the lack of many things the OP also touches on: Lack of various species, lack of enough choices in how you create and build your character... Even the lack of systems that make the world of an MMO feel at least a bit dynamic.
I'm not going to say my fears about the world of the game turned out to be unfounded, many of them were... What was surprising to me was that the game was still fun to play, at least more so than Dragon Age 2 and even Mass Effect games. At the end of the day, I was reminded this is more of a straight up "Bioware game" than an "online Star Wars world" and that was not bad. i liked dragon age 2 what was wrong with dragon age 2. That said i loved tor and no im not suprised by the positives. Sure it has some downfalls like the body types being so limited and ui not being customizable.
Allthough the ui thing didnt botherm eit does alot of players from what i saw in beta chat. Of course i also saw alot of this game is amazing , and this is so much fun i cant stop playing, Damn i have to go back to wow till launch i dont wana go back to wow for until launch.
That kinda stuff. The chat channels in tor beta were 90 pct postivie in my opinion This board suprised me in that every person who made a negative thread didnt make just 1 which i can deal with they had to make 10 and act like there opinion is the only right one.
I am suprised people saying this game is for the simple minded and gullable are shocked people fight back and defend tor. REally u insult all the players that loved tor and u dont expect them to fight back
Oh and as for innovation story, choices in yoru story that matter and od have an impact on your story some of the choiices dont get felt till higher levels though, companions and there take on crafting are all innovations in that no one has done them before.
Bioware from day 1 has stated they were gonna make a typical mmo with the 4th pillar anyone suprised tor is exactly that is beyond me.
I've been following the game closely for about the last 6 months. I've watched all The Republic shows about the game in that tiem frame.
That said I told myself not to think this game is going to be the greatest thing ever. I figured since I have liked most all of the Bioware games with ME and DA series been some of my all-time favorites that there was a solid chance I would at least enjoy the game.
I played WoW for a little over a year just before WotlK came out and really enjoyed my time playing the game when I wasn't raging on the mic during an arena game. WoW is a good game. I think it's great in alot of ways. The art style is timeless, the colors are vibrant and the game plays superbly. After awhile I needed a break and quit playing and that's when I noticed TOR was being made.
Now having played during this open beta weekend I know for a fact I will enjoy the game and sub. I only leveled up 2 classes to 13 and 15 (operative and juggernaut) and enjoyed both enough that I might main both and split my time between them as I level up which is unheard of for me.
What really got me thinking was hearing how this client was like 10gigs smaller than what the full time beta testers are playing. That and the fact it's predominantly a server load stress test.
All things considered I only disconnected about 4x over the course of probably 20 hours of play on a packed server. Sure there were miscellaneous bugs like sound issues and what not, but overall most of the bugs were small. The game played solidly even with a debugger running in the background on maxed settings on a non retail and not fully optimized build.
I could go on and on about what I like about the game, but one thing after logging off for the last time on this open beta stood out for me on retrospect. I laughed while playing the main story line several times over the course of the weekend. Like literally chuckled out loud on both of the 2 classes stories I played. I can't remember laughing over the story of my rogue while playing WoW except maybe once out of the 34 days played it took me to get to max level. And that's saying something as that rogue is still my all time favorite character from any mmo or game played.
"So, what do you expect will happen to SWTOR after launch? And are you surprised by the many negative feedbacks?"
I am surprised reading all classes on the same side having the same stories!
I was led to believe by fanboys on this forum defending the lack of the games standard mmorpg features (and therefor the lasting appeal) every class had a story line bigger then KOTOR. So you could play this for months and the stories were the content.
All the other negative feedback does not surprise me especially about the lifeless and bland environments. I played the Dragon Age 2 demo and was seriously "surprised" how boring the scenery looked. I was even more surprised reading in reviews that same scenery was used throughout the whole game!
Apparently this is now what Bioware does. Crappy environments and making already lineair RPG's even more lineair with the radical dialogue system.
I expect this game to sell a few million in the first few months. Six months after release there will be less then half a million playing. After a year only 100.000.
And are you surprised by the many negative feedbacks?
Let me ask you a very simple question.
When is the last time you saw a "big" (expensive, I guess) game, of any variety, launch without a lot of hate?
It's become a pattern, ingrained, since before WoW. Happens every bloody time.
Self-pity imprisons us in the walls of our own self-absorption. The whole world shrinks down to the size of our problem, and the more we dwell on it, the smaller we are and the larger the problem seems to grow.
I played an imperial agent and a sith warrior to 13 and 15 and neither story was even close to being similar. Classes may go through the same or similar areas, but the story involved is totally different. I could care less if a bounty hunter and imperial agent both quest on the same planet because their stories aren't going to play out the same regardless of whether they visit the same areas.
Having only seen basically the imperial starter zones and 1 planet and a spaceport I think they have done a good job with the environments. Last I checked their are like 17 planets in the game and many of them are alot bigger than the early level planets.
Perceptions vary I guess, to me the overall feedback has been largely positive, even on this site, and while the game isn't perfect, it appears Bioware delivered exactly what they promised, a well made, traditional theme park MMO with heavy emphasis on story telling and KOTOR lore.
I agree with others, most of the negative feedback has been due to unrealistic expectations by players who want it to be something it was never intended to be, or want game mechanics (such as a dynamic, Skyrim type gameworld) that are not technical feasible in today's MMO's.
I think if you play it for what it has, you'll have a really great time. If you keep looking at what it lacks, of course you're going to be disappointed, especially if you can't have fun in an MMO without said missing features.

Agreed, But there are some major flaws. Especially in the audio in warzones.
And even if you play if for what it is your are basically paying for a singleplayer game unless you play with someone the same level and class as yourself. But I could forgive all that if it wasn't for the bloody factions. The story telling is great, So are the graphics (somewhat) but both factions have the same classes with different names, And that really bums me out.
I don't feel like an evil sith when I'm doing the exactly same pebble tossing Jedi Sage except that I'm using force lightning. They could really have spent some more time on the characters skill development to be fair.
Other than that, I've played the beta and to be honest I don't think I'm going to follow through with my preorder. But don't get me wrong, The voiceovers and questlines are very entertaining, And I did enjoy the beta. But other than that I felt that this really isn't my kind of MMO.

The problem, so I've read is, "after you leave the starter world, 80% of content is the exact same within your faction"
Simple I never went in expecting that it would be SWG nor did I look for things other than what was promised. I am happy with the game and will be buying it but if the overall feedback which I am doubtful since this site is definitely not any litmus to actual sales and retention is negative I am hardly surprised coming from the MMO weary crowd at this site.
As other people have pointed out, larger games always seem to attract more haters. I would guess that these people expect the game to be perfectly polished to THEIR STANDARDS and not from other player’s perspectives. Sure some people might agree with them in saying "Combat is boring", or "There's no butterflies in the sky", or “The world is too small/large” or my personal favourite “It’s not like WoW”. In my eye these people have their expectation level set way too high and it will come back and bite them for thinking so.
Personally speaking I am very happy with SWTOR, having played it over the Beta Weekend. It surpassed all my expectations on how a game should play. I get very frustrated when someone tells me a game is crap because its graphics are poor despite it playing better than other games in its category. One example of this would be Total Annihilation; I love this game to bits, it is one of the best games I have ever played and will most probably continue to be so and yet one of my friends criticises the game saying “It doesn’t look as good as Supreme Commander” while others have embrased it and are enjoying it very much. Who gives a damn if SW doesn’t have an active environment, frankly it does not affect the game in any way, shape or form. Us the players are expected the be this environment and to be honest I loved it to bits while levelling my Bounty Hunter constantly hearing explosions and debris scatter around all over the place, it really made me feel like I was in the middle of a gang war. This would just not feel the same if these explosions were just random occurrences put in place by the developers.
The voice acting was expertly done and given this was my first foray into questing with a voice acting system (In an MMO) it was a blessing in that I was immersed into the storyline far more than I ever expected. Who here can honestly say that while playing WoW they sat there reading every scrap of information the quest givers gave them, I sure didn’t give a crap about what the Burning Blade was doing or who was fighting who, all I read was “Go kill 10x of so-in-so”. When I was testing my Bounty Hunter I was so immersed in the story I kept playing on just to find out what happened next and this immersion is one of the main reasons I will buy the game.
Space combat was meh but it has already been said by the developers that space combat isn’t really that in depth compared to the main story as isn’t expected to be so, BUT they have said that this may change in the future after player input. My recommendation would be to start ticketing Bioware for larger space combat with free manoeuvring just like in the classic Star Wars flight sims, I wonder if I can import a TIE Defender or Missile Boat into TOR, hehe a guy can dream.
I look forward to the release very much and I’m disappointed I can’t play the game now, frankly I’m addicted, I’ve tasted just a little bit of the game and I want more, “Please sir, can I have some more?”.

Basically this, I haven't been surprised by MMORPG.com feedback in years. Everyone knew what this game was going to be, those who didn't were in the desert or living under a rock...
Those of us who were held under NDA for months tried hinting that the game was exactly what Bioware was advertising it as. Nothing more, nothing less....
Is it any surprise that those who dislike this type of game are up in arms? Nope... Is it any surprise those who have been preaching doom are still preaching doom? Nope... That's exactly what I was expecting.
IS MMORPG.com showcasing the type of feedback I've seen on the beta forums for months now? Not at all...

Hmm I would say that most of the negative feedback has been because the game is too similar to WoW.
But anyway, what is interesting to me is that it seems like you either love this game or hate it. There are tons of "OMG BEST EVAR" reviews out there and tons of "OMG WORST GAME EVAR" reviews out there. So if there is one word I could use to describe SWTOR it would be "polarizing."
Then again, that could just be because only people with strong feelings would bother to write a review .

Indeed the world is big, and that's not a bad thing at all. The problem is that they've made so many servers it seperates a lot of people, there are different channels also that seperates people. If they made a port city that big they shoulda considered allowing more players into one channel to make it feel more "lively."
I'd wish I had more time playing because it did capture my interest for a while. But then I started to feel like if I didn't continue doing the storyline quest I wouldn't be able to advance very far. I've only gotten to level 15, so I dont know how far the storyline takes you to, but something about it kept telling me to keep going. Just to know what happens next.
Its a good game to play, but I wouldn't expect it to get me to play for a long term sense. I'm still tempted to wanna pre-order or at least buy it upon release as a time sink though. One thing I did find to be very innovative is how you can send your companion to run your errands for you while you do your own thing and he/she would come back when the tasks are done. I was a little bit confused though when you want to craft you'd get your companion to do it for you, unless of course I was doing something wrong? I see the way they're headed. You get less downtime when your companion can do everything while you're out there trying to level up, but its just too simple it takes away the enjoyment.
I mean come on, at level one you can handle 5 mobs at a time already. The supposed heroic 2 man areas I tackled just fine with the die and respawn where you are thing. I loved how I was able to kill the elite bosses solo (not using my companion) with a lil bit of strategy though. It worked awesome for the ranged type bosses for example the quest where you're a "bounty hunter" go to the instance and kill the 5 bosses in Coruscant. It was a sweet trick, for the fire boss and gun boss who had 10k/14k hp respectively. Pull them to the middle room that has the big pillar and fight them until you are low on health use the medipac to heal and run around the pillar so they cant shoot through, just repeat the process till they're dead.
I enjoyed trying out the game. On my side, I've only encountered one problem and it was when I would use Force Wave and knock the mobs off the balcony area and they didn't die. My companion would go nuts and wouldn't help me with other mobs as I've moved on he would just try to run off the balcony. I've had little to no lag at all, FPS ranged at 55-80 with close to max settings a few tweaks here and there. Wished the Sprint ability woulda came at an earlier level though.

Not much can be done about those unrealistic expectations people have about games. Look at people claiming Archeage being the AAA sandbox game. Talk about setting the bar too high.
Although sometimes I wonder if people around here are even into playing mmorpgs.
Kyleran: "Now there's the real trick, learning to accept and enjoy a game for what
it offers rather than pass on what might be a great playing experience

FreddyNoNose: "A good game needs no defense; a bad game has no defense." "Easily digested content is just as easily forgotten."
LacedOpium: "So the question that begs to be asked is, if you are not interested in
the game mechanics that define the MMORPG genre, then why are you
playing an MMORPG?"
Feed back is what I expected. Tons of hater posts, tons of fanboy posts, and tons of legit posts.
This game like all other games isn;t going to please everyone. But i had a lot of fun in beta and plan on buying the game and thats all that matters to me. I enjoy listening to other people and seeing how others percieve the game, but ultimately for me its my opinion that trumps all.
I got my first taste of SW:TOR over this holiday beta weekend, and for the most part I enjoyed myself immensely. I only tried out one class; The Sith Inquisitor. What I saw of the class story line as I leveled was just interesting enough to keep me wondering what would be revealed next, or which direction the plot line would next unfold. It kept me mildly entertained, although [SPOILER ALERT!!!] I wanted to reach through my monitor and strangle the peppy and ever-cheerful Lord Zash. She was a Sith Lord? Really? She looked like Peppermint Patty and sounded like Julie Andrews! What gives? It took away from what could have been a very enjoyable traipse through the Dark Side... but I digress---
Overall, I enjoyed my time in the weekend beta, and I was sad to have only had the weekend to explore the worlds of SW:TOR. As I leveled and gained new abilities, I became more engrossed in the gameplay, despite some of the missing features found so commonly in today's other MMOs. That being said, BioWare is in a unique position to further tweak and refine the gameplay experience because of the home computer aspect of this game, where content patches and expansions are entirely possible.
This gives me hope that while SW:TOR may not be all that I expected going out of the gate, it has the very plausible potential to become much greater than any of my expectations going forward.
I recall that just prior to WoW's release, many people were doomsayers, expounding on the fact that Blizzard didn't know anything about making an MMO, and that WoW would fail. To not expect this type of behavior prior to any AAA title is just absurd and naive. Fans of a pre-existing title will be fans of that title, as well they should be. A MMO requires a lot of personal time investment. If you aren't a fan of the game you're spending so much time playing, then it's time to move on to a new hobby.
I liked what I saw, with a few minor disappointments. People will say what they're going to say, and forums like these are bound to be full of naysaying and jeering, but it comes with the territory, sort of like a MMO Hazing.
Here's to looking forward to Early Access on December 15th! Cheers!

The DVM, or Disgruntled Vocal Minority. For every poster spewing negativity, there are far more who remain silent and just play the game.

Enjoyable for some, I presume.
Doesnt make it any less sad.

hi,
this game is maybe not the best of all mmos and it maybe doesnt have best elements to be rated 10.
after all this game is unique there is currently no other mmo on martket like SWTOR, or if there is any
its very bad game or lowcontent made. SWTOR is a sci-fiction mmmorpg there you have almost all freedom like in other
mmos, there you can do most things and on market are almost none sci-fiction mmos like SWTOR currently.
i played the beta and i liked the game much, some people may not like it but everyone has its own tastes, after all i never
got bored had always something to do, doing it with grouping or solo its up to you.
after many lvls and hours the game never gets boring and it always turns game to be more interesting after you are lvling up
and its getting more execting with the story too.
i can only say the game is very good in my eyes, if most doesnt think so trie to find a better mmo currently that is oriented to be
a sci-fiction mmorpg like it is SWTOR.

Nope not surprised. Some people like it. Some people don't. Pretty much what I expected.
My theme song.

Are you team Azeroth, team Tyria, or team Jacob?
I wrote a review got one reply, maybe you're on to something though, because i wasn't polarized :P.

Cheers!
It's an improvement over 100% being the same.
