I heard it only sold 27.000 copies. NCsoft had expected to sell at least 500.000.
Its just something I have heard.. But it would explain why NCsoft has not released a press release for Korean territories.
Apparently it is due to allot of reasons with some of them being;
1)Koreans are commited to insane grinding and long lvl ques. Hence why Lineage 2 is played by 3-4 million people over there.
2)75% of all korean gamers use their MMO accounts on computer cafees. So in theory I think its possible for 4 koreans to share one single game box. thats probably a hole house hole.
3)Allot of alternative casual friendly persistent online RPGs have recently launched in korea. what should make them better? I dont know... perhaps just that they are korean or have korean manga/anime style. I know korean animation is not anime.. but the same look-a-like animations has excited just as long in korea as in japan.
Dont get me wrong... Guild wars is not a flop. in Europe and USA it has sold over 650.000 copies and that is very nice. I think its more than neverwinter nights, dungeon siege and so on sold.
However it must be a dissapointment for NCsoft. I wonder if Anet will be able to maintain its current business module. with them already having skipped the first expansion goal(more than 9 months after launch to first expansion) Im beginning to wonder if they will be able to make it profitable.
Im sure that Guild wars will close its servers down before demanding monthly fee, however the expansion music was very SOE like and totally cheap.
I dont know. I hope for the best. Im getting sick of all the slow lvl grinding MMOs. I want to get my social life back.
and currently im looking more forward to the normal-not-so-demanding-online-RPGs like neverwinter nights 2, dragon age and baldurs gate 3 than dark and light, wow expansion, LOTR online and dungeons and dragons online. slow arsed MMOs.
If Guild wars dies, I hope it will at least have started it trend about more casual player games. more laid back... more faster and more instant action. In the end it does not matter if you use 20 hours or 20.000 hours on character advancement. the goal and distanation is ultimately the same.

Yeah, 2 US koreans in my guild in GW and they said GW just isnt popular in Korea. One even was visiting and was in a cafe and said noone was playing GW but probably 30 were playing assorted other mmo's with lineage 2 having the lions share.
they love starcraft, seems like not haveing a grind wouldnt turn them off that much.
I dont think guild wars will die here in america.. theres SO many ppl on or at least it seems as tho.
But for there not being many koreans..they sure do own at this game.
It is really not that surprising that in korea this game has not done well, since like you said most people play Lineage 2. Heck even WoW has had trouble breaking into the market there. I'm sure that NcSoft must have anticipated this, seeing as how both games are developed by them.
What does surprise me though is that Korea still kicks our asses in HoH, pretty sad considering they have so few players and such superior tactics. Granted they do use cafes and are all in the same building which helps immensly in cordination of the team, however since ts/vent is availible this should not be that much of a factor. Hats of to the Koreans for their superior tactics.
yeah, not just tactics , everything really ,
we are ancient humans compared to asians ,
their culture as more them 6000 years , we have terrible 2005 ...

just tell it like it is
No you're not "telling it like it is"...
You're being a flaming retard.
lol call me a flamer if you want.
Koreans dont play GW because thier a very mature gaming market with serious demands on developers to produce quality software, basically if its crap the Koreans know straightaway and it goes nowhere.
Have a look in some other forums (prospective GW players), do you see as many negative threads and comments in anyone? Maybe matrix online or something equally lame, but as for real MMORPG compeditors, GW has its lion share of haters.
Do you think we are all a secret little club of flamers that likes to come here and flame GW?
Why must there be constant appeals by GW fanbois on this forum to plz stop the flames?
The reason is this:
There are a lot of people that think this game sucks. Sure its got its fans (so did Cabbage Patch Dolls), but hell, its haters are many, and add the country of Korea to that list.
then again sif they know anything about gaming..
You barely know the real Korean MMORPGs, there are hundreds of them.

apparently the licencing is different in Korea - they have sold 27,000 licences to Internet cafe's, that then resell accounts on to customers. So 27,000 internet cafe's that can resell GW accounts isn't bad...especially when you consider lineage 'only' sold 19,000 licences.

PvE in general is pretty lame, if you think long and hard about it. You are spending your time beating a severely gimped AI that would lose to a well trained monkey. Best not to think too long and hard why you are wasting time playing games in general actually...
just play GW... and you'll see that korean don't hate this game... they just own it
and yep, a lot of people think this game sucks... but 99% of them are WOW's player...
so immature... that they prefer flame other games instead of playing their boring one...
You barely know the real Korean MMORPGs, there are hundreds of them.
Hundreds?! OMG, I can see them all now! I...I...I can't tell the difference! They're all the same and they all suck! I'm drowning in a sea of mediocrity!(I think that's how you spell it.)
The amount of cookie cutter mmo games in korea is growing non stop and they just have someone to support them. Their taste is really different I guess.
On the side note, they are damn good in what they play. Sadly Europe always get the short end of stick
Good ole case of the pot calling the kettle black. Nice first post, wonder how you can ever top that. Here is a hint, If you feel the need to call people losers, attempt at using some form of proper english. Otherwise, the only loser anyone can see is you.

No he's saying the ppl who use Bots are losers...because they are.
actualy not 6k years... go do a google search :P hehe it's more like 4k, but 5 if you count them as the decendents of countries that existed 5k years ago in present-day china. but that still has nothing to do with GW... asian countries Does include a tougher education but that wouldn't give them +10 intelligence of ppl in NA. :P
actualy everyone thinks koreans rule in HoH, thats just a illusion, i've play TONS of bad korean builds in HoH, hell i've play more bad Kor teams than good. it's just that when someone gets beaten by a korean team, they tend to remember it longer... there were a few good korean guilds in beta, probably less than the number of good NA/EU guilds, but KOR (the guild) was able to supprise everyone with their builds...
You barely know the real Korean MMORPGs, there are hundreds of them.
yes, you are right, there are hundreds of them, but most of them are bad, other than the different texture and interface, they all play the same. there are a few good ones thou, but not Hundreds of good ones...
and to the first poster in that quote: yea, we might as well loose our brain and let the koreans tell us what to play since they obviously have a better sense of picking out games than us, actualy, why dont we just hand our gaming-industry over to the koreans since they are so much better at games than us? jeez, most koreans likes the high-grind based games and ganking, probably because they have the time since video games is the main stream there, but i dont, i play GW because i refuse to spend hundreds of hours grinding on WoW just to play PvP.
You think Guild Wars isn't quality? It is the largest chunk of gaming goodnes you will EVER get for 50 bucks lol smoke some more meth.
This is the all time laffer quote. Check out some of the titles that are popular in Korea. They are craptastic grind fests with hoaky graphics except for Lineage 2 which is just a craptastic grind and grief fest. I'll take a North American or European game any day of the week over their drivel. rofl hilarious.

WTH is wrong with his post? People who cheat ARE losers irl and need to win even if it means cheating. Thats super lame and those people need a beating and I don't mean online. His post was not perfect english but was certainly readable. I agree with him and even if I didn't his english and spelling is better than 90% of the people on this site.
