What puts me off is that TOR's game systems, for me, are too similar to WoW during the Burning Crusade expansion; for the most part, regarding character choices, roles, and development, I like WotLK/Cataclysm better. Also, I feel like character development in TSW, GW2, and even Diablo 3 and WoW's Mists of Pandaria will be much more to my liking, to the point I might abandon TOR if I ever got the game in the first place.
And liking the character I play is really important for me when playing a MMO. While liking my character is not that important in single player games like the previous Bioware titles, I can't afford to dislike it if I'm going to be stuck with a single character for hundreds of hours.
Actually glad by the negative feedback from many on this site since their definition of a good mmo is the exact opposite of mine. I already knew what this game offered because I've played it, so no amount of hateraid or misinformation was going to change that. But the depths that some of them have gone by posting their hate in every thread and creating alt accounts shows how worried they are of TOR'S success.
The thing you have to keep in perspective is the majority of people who will undoubtedly buy, play and love this game are generally the type who don't go around perusing the gaming sites and taking gaming site reviews to heart. They also aren't the type to be discussing it on the forums and I'd wager the vast majority won't even view the forums and even a smaller percentage will post or be active.
Look at all the negative reviews WoW got for Cata and the up-comming expansion, still there will be millions who purchase it who, for the most part, will be completely oblivious to the web reviews.
the ones who love a game, and dont post about it positively AREN'T the ones you need to worry about. its the block of gamers who are just looking for a good MMO to play and dont wear the rose colored glasses. The ones who pre-ordered SWTOR and wont be buying it anymore due to their beta experiences or the ones who will still buy it, but are already saying it will give them 3 months of fun and then its time to move on.
Apparently from what we are hearing from the initial impressions, the game has plenty of issues. we have heard time and again its too story driven and does not have enough to do for the long term. in short, its not an MMO.

Quite the contrary, one might even find it too much of an MMO, as I often found it a bit hard to get back on track with the story quests after spending hours grouping up and doing PvP.
Feel free to use my referral link for SW:TOR if you want to test out the game. You'll get some special unlocks!

TOR is very much a MMO.
It's just as "single player" as WoW, EQ2, WAR, AoC, Aion, Rift, etc. etc. etc.
It's just that TOR does the solo-friendly stuff 1000000x better then those games, does the multiplayer only (instances) better, and does the open-world group stuff better or as good.

SWTOR will do just fine probably settling in the 2M user range.

I am not suprised at all here on MMORPG.com. Anonymity allows for the very vocal hate crew to come out in force for just about every game made. Every single game presented here gets bashed.
Someone else mentioned the general serenity of the chat for SWTOR during beta. There was tons of positive comments from testers as well as some actual constructive feedback. Overall you could simply tell that people were enjoying themselves and having fun playing in the stress test.

I know. No one was crying about the game on my server. Everyone was just having fun. I think it's one of those after effects when you realize just how smoothly everything went because you were expecting potentially worse.
Not really surprised -- no. I said awhile back that for a lot of people, SW:TOR is going to be a self fulfilling prophecy, meaning that those who preached nothing but doom and gloom for months on end would look for anything negative to latch onto as proof that they were right about the game being a horrible mess.
Secondly, a lot of criticism is due to players simply letting their hype meter get a bit too high and expecting too much out of BioWare. I found that what we got with SW:TOR felt very much like a BioWare game molded into the traditional MMORPG formula. I wasn't expecting CoH level character customization or Skyrim level immersion, and I'm not sure why anyone else was either. What we got was a traditional MMORPG that finally puts a heavy emphasis on storytelling which is a real boon for even the most mundane task in PvE, and a game that finally lets us adventure in an online Star Wars universe that so many of us wanted but didn't get from Star Wars Galaxies.
If you base SW:TOR on what it is rather than what you think it should have been, there's little valid reason to give it anything less than an 8/10.
This really does say it best for me. I never expected gods gift to MMO's. I expected an enjoyable experience that I can see myself easily playing for a year. I'm a pretty casual player as I get older, to many responsibilities. This game I can easily toy with multiple toons, group when I want, explore a new gaming world, do some bg's, perhaps top out a character and see the small group end game. I'm very excited to jump into the star wars universe, this is the game for me, for now and perhaps a year or so.
Perceptions vary I guess, to me the overall feedback has been largely positive, even on this site, and while the game isn't perfect, it appears Bioware delivered exactly what they promised, a well made, traditional theme park MMO with heavy emphasis on story telling and KOTOR lore.
I agree with others, most of the negative feedback has been due to unrealistic expectations by players who want it to be something it was never intended to be, or want game mechanics (such as a dynamic, Skyrim type gameworld) that are not technical feasible in today's MMO's.
I think if you play it for what it has, you'll have a really great time. If you keep looking at what it lacks, of course you're going to be disappointed, especially if you can't have fun in an MMO without said missing features.
Basically this, I haven't been surprised by MMORPG.com feedback in years. Everyone knew what this game was going to be, those who didn't were in the desert or living under a rock...
Those of us who were held under NDA for months tried hinting that the game was exactly what Bioware was advertising it as. Nothing more, nothing less....
Is it any surprise that those who dislike this type of game are up in arms? Nope... Is it any surprise those who have been preaching doom are still preaching doom? Nope... That's exactly what I was expecting.
IS MMORPG.com showcasing the type of feedback I've seen on the beta forums for months now? Not at all...
Well, in all fairness, MMORPG.com permits feedback normally moderated on a beta forum, so of course you're going to see a more negative viewpoint here. Also, people who gave the beta a try and didn't care for it tend to stop playing (and posting) while those who are enjoying themselves while testing keep posting mostly positive feedback.
As you said, no surprises in the feedback, some love it, some hate it, many will give it a try regardless what's written here, that's for certain.

No I was not surprised at all. Personaly I loved the game. Yeah it's not perfect but I really enjoyed it and can see myself playing it for a long time. Infact I already miss it. What would have surprised me if on tuesday morning I came back to check up on what people had been writing and found that everybody loved it. That would surprise me more than Luke Skywalker jumping out of my wardrobe and cutting my head of with a lightsaber.
I am not surprised that people like the game after I've played it. I am not surprised that there are also people who don't like it. I think it's interesting that nearly all of the people who dislike the game on these forums are new accounts or accounts with very few posts. It's like the people who want to bash something keep alt accounts laying around and bring them out when there's something new to bash.
I am surprised at how much I liked playing the game. I truly did not expect SW:ToR to raise the bar on my expectations for mmorpg.
I am surprised at the pre-order numbers. That's just a lot of people to order an mmorpg. It'll be interesting to watch the box sales after launch. I think word of mouth will be a big seller for this game.
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.

To clarify I'm not saying there was only good feedback, not in the slightest actually. There was plenty of the opposite. It just wasn't in the same areas most of the negative has been focused on here. Such as the "lifeless world" or the type of themepark features TOR has.
For every minute you are angry , you lose 60 seconds of happiness."-Emerson
Compared to most soon-to-be-released games, the negative feedback has been minimal, IMO. Particularly compared to the positive feedback.
And most of the negative feedback comes from the sandbox camp, folks which this game was never meant to be for. We knew they wouldn't like it; no new news, there.
There are also alot of fair criticisms of the game from people that gave it a fair shake. But, even those that were more negative than positive, I have a hunch that we'll be seeing many of those folks on launch day.
In terms of sterility... at least compared to other MMO's, I don't see it. I'll say that there's a lot I missed the first time around when I played my first character, since I was so eager to see as much as I could as fast as I could. Like I've said in previous posts, running around in piles of junk doesn't seem like a big deal. But when you stop, take a look around, and realize that you're actually standing within the remains of a crashed ship, it gives a whole new sense of scale and perspective.
Tatooinne, especially the wide open expanse of the Jundland Wastes definitely gets me thinking about the movies.
The Coruscant Senate Plaza(particularly inside the senate building) is a bit sterile; I can't really put my finger on what it is, exactly.
I'd LOVE an MMO like this that was set in the Skywalker timeline. But doing that shuts down a big part of what makes Star Wars unique; jedi, jedi, jedi. SWG should have NEVER had them, yet it was probably doomed without them.

Well I think it depends on two things:
1.) The hype people had didn't come along to the game. In my case I was about 100% sure that the game would suck and to my surprise I must say that I did enjoy it. alot so I will buy it. I do agree with the sterile world being a huge letdown.

I'm shocked the game is exactly what people thought it was, and what Bioware told us it was.
Come on people....
I'm surprised the first quest is "kill 10 space rats". They should fire the guy responsible.

Yeah, considering the types of things you're doing to start off with in other cases, the above is definitely a head scratcher.
