Under-hype yourself on purpose?

Forgive me if this is a stupid idea but I've been considering it...

I know i'm gonna like this game for several reasons. I loved WoW and played it for about a year so i know i'll at least get several months of entertainment out of it, which is enough for me. I also love story and often get incredibly into Bioware games for this reason. But as release comes ever closer, I'm sort of worried I'm becoming overhyped for it.

So i was thinking.. why not read only the bad reviews. That way, when I finally do play the game I'm so ready to be dissapointed that I, in turn, have a better experience. I want to get the best experience I can out of this game.

Anyone else ever consider doing this? xD

    Yes, but it soon goes away because I rationalize that I cannot think it to be a bad game and it will be amazing.

  • Ah yah that makes sense. I guess when you do end up playing the game you expect to be impressed because you've underhyped yourself on purpose.

    EDIT: I guess the only way for this to work is if you were naturally underhyped.

    This is a themepark mmo just like WOW, if you like these kind of games, then (most likely)  you will like swtor.

    It seems this kind of business model pays off the fastest, mostly appealing to the 14-19 crowd,

    using their mommies credit card.

    The star-wars theme adds another layer of profitability. Those who go to bed with star destroyers printed

    on their pajamas and greet their friends with "may the force be with you" will also likely to play this game.

    Decent game with few bugs, nice story line, much better star-wars feel than SWG, graphics a bit dated (2008 Hero

    engine) The pet system is well done and unique in some ways.

    I already cancelled my preorder, (after playing in beta)  hopefully someone will come out with a DAOC II  some day.

    That's probably why it worked for me. I wasn't even going to follow SWTOR when it came out, let alone buy it, as these themepark games are beyond horrible. But then Bioware sent me a beta invite for the weekend so I figured I'd give it a try. As I've said in other posts, it reminded me a lot of LOTRO, and LOTRO is the only MMO I've ever stuck with since playing the original EQ, so that's good news.

    While I did start getting tired of 5 minute cutscenes just to get a quest of 'Go click on four items', I think I'll end up buying it come release as I found it quite entertaining at times. It has flaws - class mirroring, long cut scenes for simple quests, stale environments - but overall I can probably spend a month or two playing it.

    I've beta tested every major MMO that came out after WoW's release and learned better at this point not to get too excited at MMO releases. I actually expected worse I was already prepared for it to be a cookie cutter WoW clone so I was okay with the game from that aspect. I was extremely surprised by the state of the game even in it's beta state and happy I preordered.

    I have been ignoring the bad reviews of the game as most of what I seen complains that it's just a wow clone and not anything new. Having started playing MMOs with Ultima Online I do agree that a developer needs to break away from the WoW cookie cutter type and go back to the sand box style of games or advance the genre. With all types of Media including Movies and Music you have Media that are mainstream successes but artistically it may be lacking. Since now video games are considered by many to be an art form something that pushes the realm of creativity and breaks the mold isn't going to sell well to a mainstream audience than what's already tried and proven. Regardless of the negative reviews SWTOR is going to be a mainstream success there's no doubt about it from what I experienced in it's beta. It's going to steal alot of WoW's thunder for sure but it doesn't advance the MMO genre and I'm fine with that.
