Had a massive reduction in performance with this weekends initial build, happy to report as the weekend went on it improved somewhat. Graphics wise I saw no significant improvement, AA still not available and I didn't go the route of forcing it. I'm happy with the graphics on the whole, some of the background scenes for Coruscant look too wishy washy for my liking but on the whole I think the graphics and art style are fine, if we are comparing to AoC though, nope not as good imho.
The simple fact is that most people want good gameplay and good graphics. Most people will settle for less than state of the art graphics if the gameplay is great. However, most people will not settle for less if the gameplay isn't good. Bottom line is that Gameplay is the #1 deciding factor and graphics #2. So you put them on a graph say 1 - 10 good to worst on both axis, and you could come up with method of determining where that line is for the sampled population. That would actually be interesting. I'll have to think about it.
Cool story. You're basing this statement about what most people want on what, exactly? BioWare games have never been known for great gameplay or great graphics. They are known for great story. And they consistently reach high levels of commercial and critical success. Maybe TOR will be the exception to that rule, but I am not aware of a shred of actual data that would lead someone to think so.
Peace is a lie, there is only passion. Through passion, I gain strength. Through strength, I gain power. Through power, I gain victory. Through victory, my chains are broken. The Force shall free me.
There is no such thing as a "magic bullet" patch for any game yet, & this didn't break that trend.
AoC has higher quality graphics by quite some measure, however where SWTOR does score points is in the gesticulating of the characters, particularly in the cut-scenes, however as far as the facial animations go a whole lot of them are "clunky" insofar as they are not really matching a relevant emotion in the dialogue, uncanny valley gets real strong at times with them.
Also it's hillarious how some short sentences are spoken at great length & long sentences become just a few words, Alien languages are not following any kind of real linguistic logic that I can discern, it's clumsy & creates a disconnect, though that's going off topic.
People who believe in the silver bullet are fools. It doesn't exist.

I could see it looking better if they enabled AA, which was off last time I was in.
More concerning for me is the change to the moddable armor system. Leaving the armor rating and damage as part of the item instead of the mods kills the gear customization system. between that and the removal of the "match armor to chest piece" system customization has taken a big hit.
I'm ready to farm Jedi come the 15th so I have not reason to hate on SWTOR.
However, I'm not looking to buy any land in that swamp you're selling.
Good and Bad are subjective and a mostly personal opinion. Although if bad enough one could not deny. Oh hell.. you know someone would and use a similar argument to the one you are here.
Graphics that fitting the IP/product is measurable reality and both AOC and SWTOR do that very well.

Isn't there still an entire class of items which is fully modifiable, including armor rating and damage? I believe the color is orange.

Yes, but I think they are inferior to the purple end game gear. So it will still work fine as everyone levels but at cap everyone will look the same to be competitive.

Really? Do we have confirmation that top tier mods can't give you the same stats as top tier pre-statted gear?

This is my understanding based on the discussions on the tester forums. I'm not in this weekend so I can't check myself.
You would think you might have included some screenshots to prove your point but nope.
Exactly this is the typical nonsense we see at mmorpg.com then the mods allow these threads to continually pop up and ridicule the people who want to discuss or debate the viewpoints.
The FACT is the game is a DX9 game that standard of DX libraries was set in 2004,that is almost 8 years ago,i am sure MANY players have pc's that came out after DX9c.They didn't even allow AA and last beta the vsync was set to automatic,so that is not a game trying to allow the best options for graphics.
I would not say for one minute that the game has terrible graphics,i found them acceptable,i actually enjoyed tripping around the world,it was other "lack of" aspects that i didn't like.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
I played AoC ever since release. Even when AoC was still running on DX9 it looked better than SWTOR does. Unless they were letting us test a several year old version of the game and we've never seen the full polished results, then I'm gonna have to call BS on this one.
AoC looks so good that I've taken literally thousands of Screen Shots of that game, and I never even once reached for screenshot hotkey in SWTOR.

AoC and SWTOR are using 2 different types of graphic engines. AoC does have awesome graphics and even still to this day people have issues running it on high settings especially when it released. But comparing the 2 types of graphics are like comparing apples and oranges they are 2 different engines. Even still SWTOR is releasing smoother than the current version of AoC is right now.

The OP made the direct comparison. I simply pointed out that he's dead wrong.
Do people automatically assume the game doesn't have great graphics because of the cartoon style?
What about the details? If you look at the characters faces you'll see detail that is rare in any MMO. Certainly better than most, if not AoC, although admittedly its been a while since ive seen AoC's graphics.
this is one thing severly lacking for swtor you see how everything feels alive just looking around. Nothing like that in swtor
That video says it all, i wish SWTOR was set in a world like that.. dang.. what a game it would have been .. but we take what we can and we got tooney so that is what i will play until the next is out ..
Honestly i prefer the graphics of SWTOR way above these, espescially with all things crakced up, and AA and FA forced the game looked really really well last weekend.
Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)
The game has textures that could have been in the original KOTOR game. Let's not fool ourselves here. It has some nice vistas but it absolutely looks dated.
I would like for them to give us options for higher end settings for people with monster computers like myself, but if the game is fun I can look past it.

Lol the MAGIC BULLET,,, I tell ya, you people crack me up with your puns.
Dude come on. I love TOR and look forward to playing it but its graphics are not AOC quality. This is almost as bad as the haters claiming it to be WOW quality.

I'm going to say that it is POSSIBLE that Bioware has better textures in store for us, and has been holding them back on the following basis:
We have had to re-download the entire game over and over again each time a new build was released (with the exception of the last).
MAYBE Bioware has been holding back on the good textures so that we wouldn't have to waste bandwidth downloading again and again.
However, as much as I wish this was the case.....I really kinda doubt it.
Although I don't play the game for it's graphics, I would kinda like more detail and better textures.

Doesn't surprise me before release they would up the graphics. Most games tend to do that in beta right before release.

Some of you are mixing up art style and "graphics".
Philosophy of MMO Game Design
Wanna see SWTOR at max graphics? Change these settings in your .ini file:
DynamicLightsLimit = 4
MeshLODQuality = 1
TextureAnisotropy = 16
FarClipScale = 4.
doShadows = true
EnableBloom = true
AntiAliasingLevel = 4
AllowDepthOfField = true
PlantDensity = 100
enableadvenvirolighting = true
DebugAdvEnviroLighting = true
UseMinSpecShaders = false
doBlobShadows = true
The result is amazing.

From what I've seen so far, SW:TOR mostly looks like SW:KotoR and SW:KotoR2, maybe with some improvements, and thus nothing like WoW.
Not anything near AoC either, but I could hardly care less about that.
Its definitely good enough, and I dont need more.
Currently Playing: World of Warcraft
TOR graphics are AOC quality? LMAO. Want to borrow my glasses? Hey guys did you know Skyrim looks like Super Mario Bro's 1?
