I'm not a big fan of FPS games, but I guess it comes down to what you want.  Skyrim has great single player that will last for quite a few hours (I beleive they tout over 300 hours, but it can go up exponentally with good mods).  MW3 I'm sure has a 3-5 hour single player campgain and good multiplayer.  So if you want face-paced pvp, I'd go with MW3.  A decent single player story with solid sand-box elements go Skyrim.  It's worth to note that Skyrim on the PC is a far better buy than on a console (unless your PC can't run it, like mine!), so if you're going for the console it'll have a few bugs and no mods (if mods were a deciding factor).

Out of the two you mentioned Skyrim is definately the hands down pick for a game that is going to last you a fair while.

Unless Bethesda does some more massive patch screw-ups like they did with their prior Skyrim patch (no magic resists).

The next game you should get is Nancy Drew Murder Mystery.

I get the sense you would have more enjoyment out of a FPS title. Elder Scrolls doesn't give you constant fast paced action.

Yeah that would probably be the only reason id be turned off to Skyrim.  Battlefield 3 seem's to be more of my scene, intense multiplayer action, i love getting the bad ass headshot's

BF3 > MW3 imo because of the customization of your character.

Skyrim is extremely buggy but its still a great game. I hear that you get over 400 hours of content. I have reached 50 hours so far and its a pretty good game but I think that overall BF3 will get more hours out of me. Skyrim would probably be funner during the first couple weeks of play though.
