What's your favorite kind of quest?

There are various complaints regarding how MMORPG's have too many of the the normal "bad guys are attacking...kill 10 dudes".

The quest I just completed was very refreshing:

I just did a quest in an MMO where I was asked to hunt for a large panther.  I killed it, the questgiver (who followed me there) said, "hmm, it's a little small" and suddenly a huge panther came and picked up the quest-giver and carried him off.  Thankfully, the questgiver dropped little smoke bombs as he was carried off so I could track him down to rescue him.  Sadly, I was too late to save him but he was avenged :D

I thought it was very fun and was a very refreshing quest.  In fact, this game I'm playing at the moment is filled with a mix of quests like these but still has plenty of the the "kill 10 rats" quests too.

By the way ... (sorry, but it I had to add) - adding voiceover and watching a 2 minute movie doesn't make a quest any more fun if you're still just kiling 10 rats, or clicking 7 cages, or finding 12 machine parts IMHO. Nothing wrong with video and voiceover though.

Have you found the type of quests that you prefer? If so, what kinds? Do you have an example?

I like the kind that entertain,  are  immersive, oh, and give rewards that make doing said quests very ...well..uh..rewarding ;)

It's interesting you mention this because I was thinking with youtube and the flash tech where its at, why browser MMOs didn't go themepark. Really its all about unique reward at the end of each quest. Browser MMOs dont really have the engine to support high end graphics but they do have the ability to embed youtube like cutscenes in thier main storylines.

To your original question, rewards are where I get quest motivated. In client MMOs I think it needs to be cosmetic but for some reason they never went all out with that and add weapon cosmetics as well as armor and clothing. In so doing, allowing players to create a look without unbalancing game mechanics. Just my long and short take on it anyway. Short and simple, rewards systems in question.

I like the Everquest epic "style" quests. I include style for things like the Coldain prayer shawl, in addition to the epic weapon quests. Despite the name, there weren't that many quests in Everquest, compared to most of todays games. The epic style quests were involved, challenging in places, required you to go many places and do many things. The rewards were great and there was a real sense of accomplishment completing them.

My favorite kind of quest is the kind that doesn't come from some guy with an exclamation point over his head. I always felt the NPCs with big neon lights over their head screaming "Hey you! Come here, I have something really important for you to do!" were very artifiical feeling, which takes a lot of the discovery and mystery out of said game.

I prefer quests that I run across on accident.

Maybe it's a found note/journal/book that prompts me to investigate further.

Maybe it's finding some half dead adventurer in a dungeon who tasks me with finishing his job (whatever that may be), but the only reason I'm on the quest is because I did a bit of exploring and just happened upon him by chance.

I could keep going, but the point I'm trying to make is that I enjoy quests that feel seamless and part of the world.

Those kinds of quests are more likely to show up in single player games however.

I like quests that are actually, you know, quests. Props to anyone who understands what that means, honestly wow has taught all the kids today that killing 10 rats is actually a quest. W. T. F.

I hope the quests can have some aims except exp. and items. What can I expect from a quest? Why do I need to kill the monsters? Make it reasonable and persuadable.

I might develop relationship with NPC and the relationship might have influence on my fate. I would love story-oriented quests and it would be wonderful if I can choose the branches and the outcomes by myself. Hope my experience can be unique in the game.

I like solving the problems. It would be interesting if the quest requires me to use my logic and ability. What about requiring me to talk with NPCs and find out the murderer according to the dialog?

It would be perfect if the outcomes of quests can be part of the achievement system. And the achievement system records my own experience instead of a list of titles. Maybe it turned out to be an autobiography .

Indie game developer. Passion manifests itself in the games we create XD

They need to be relatively short so I can do them in one playing session. I don't like quests that go on for days or weeks, by the time I log back on I have usually forgotten what the whole quest was about.

If there has to be a longer quest, make it my main quest and restrict it to one quest max.

I honestly don't mind simple kill quests if the story is good.

Bane someone's tree and then trebuchet them into oblivion.

But that doesn't show up so often any more.

I used to play MMOs like you, but then I took an arrow to the knee.

Err... kill 10 mobs of a type ?

Thats the kind of quest you get in an asian grinder like Lineage 2 ... but most european MMOs are a little bit more complex.

Yes you have some of these old simple "get 10 mobs killed" "fetch 10 items of that type from that mob type" or "find 10 items of that type from some kind of container" etc quests, but you also get something more elaborate in between.

I hope SW:TOR specifically will have a lot of good questlines.

My favorite kind of questline is of course a long one with surprises in between and alternative solutions and eastereggs and good boss fights in between.

Which ones are more complex than that?

I mean there's escort quests, but they're usually brain hemmoraging at best.

I have to agree with this post. Everquest's epic quests were what quests should be. Difficult to solve, epic in scale. Rewards that were worth doing the quest for.

i just wish quests were QUESTS!

taking a ring to mordor sneaking it through enemy territory and destroying said ring ... thats a QUEST

killing 10 rats because they are ruining farmer bobs crops is not a quest, its a chore.

Still little to simple but its start and true alot better then kill 10x rats.

If i take up a quest i want to have alot adventure/exploring, twists and plots and diversity plus exploring i love those.

In Skyrim you have huge long quest witch give you a real feeling to chance something the world and give an adventure exploring alot solve puzzles find secrets and danger also that involves open world citys dungeon all in one quest i love those.

I have found class quests to be the most fun for me. Doing a quest(s) to get another ability/skill is the best. Quests that improve my character are the best for me.

Using WoW for a couple of examples:
I loved the old Druid quests that gave you the different forms.
I liked the quests that gave Hunters the ability to tame wild animals.

Doing quests for skills/abilities instead of buying them off of a NPC is so much rewarding for me.

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.
