So I'm intrested in this game but am very cautious about it. I was wondering if anyone who's played it recently and has a somewhat unbiased view on it (ie your not a fanboy or a hater) could answer my questions/concerns.

First off I've always stayed away because of the grind, I've heard it's not bad anymore and such but was wondering what yalls thoughts were on the current state.

Secondly I keep hearing about DF2.0 and a possible character wipe, is it pointless to start a new character now or is it unknown?

Also I know the population isn't the best, but if I start now can I still find a guild/people to play with and have fun with PvP and such?

Thanks for your time.

PS- I also know there's a trial I"m downloading it now.

OK, the grind isn't so bad, but you NEED to find people to play with on a regular basis if you want to have fun. The initial 2 hours in the game can be quite hard if you are used to themepark MMO's as the mobs can be challenging. The vast majority of the game is PVP but the population is low at most times, making it a challenge to find PVP appropriate to your skill level/gear.

The 2.0 thing has been talked about for a VERY long time now and there is no definite answer for when or honestly even if it will happen. Development has either been amazingly quiet or non existent.

Try the trial and see if you like it. I still subscribe but rarely play. Mostly I am just trying to help fund the next iteration where hopefully more gameplay will exist.

    Ive played since Feb 2009.

It will take you a long long time to get viable at PVP, love how people say its not as bad as it was... It still takes many many

month to not be cannon fodder. Then even more months to become a proper vet.

DF will be wiped at some stage also for the release of DF 2.0  I would just wait.

Thanks for the replies (even though they are a bit conflicting haha, but it's good to hear both sides of thing), I suppose I'll try the trial and see how it goes.

You can try the trial to get a feel for it, but that is far from enough to see why DF is the best mmorpg. If you start now, you will never become mini maxed. In DF, in order to have fun on the pvp aspect, you must alteast become mini maxed like me or you will end up playing with a zerg who usually win only cuz of number advantage and thats not fun since you cant do much to affect the outcome.

2.0: Its still not clear if there will be a wipe or not, but the grind wont be bad as 1.0 anyway. So wipe or not, you should wait. A lot of spells and skills are getting removed, revamp and no one will be able to be good as hybrids since the gear you will wear will decide your playstyle. Same for items. most of them are getting removed so there's simply no point in not having a wipe.

You can still join 1.0 if you want, but if i were you, i would wait for an other XP bonus event to get a good start.

    Interesteing info about 2.0.

I the only reason I don't just want to wait for 2.0 is because there's no release date and I'm just really wanting to find a good PvP game. I've played this game once before on a trial but the internet I was on was horrible and I couldn't handle the lag (like 1000 ping). I've been trying MO but the PvP aspect just isn't any good IMO. I have alot of spare time now and new internet, plus it sounds like their still is SOME fun so I guess I'll try it out now.

And yeah I'm kicking myself for missing that 4xEXP weekend...hope they do another one soon.

I'm a huge fan, but also a healthy skeptic.  My opinion that AV has done a crushingly terrible job of promoting and growing the most fun MMO that I've ever played.  However, even if no growth occurs, it's still enormous fun if you know where to look for PvP.

While I agree with most players' opinions that you need months of character development to compete 1v1 versus most vets, it's nonetheless a very quick grind to get to the point where you can contribute in group combat as a Destroyer/archer.  Magic takes many months to train, whereas archery can be capped in a few weeks.  Although magic outclasses archery 1v1,  there are group buffs that will strengthen an archer ("Rapid Shot") but none that will similarly strengthen a mage's ranged attacks.

Don't get me wrong, every character is greatly strengthened by months of training, and you'll be at a disadvantage 1v1 for a long time.  But IMO group combat is where the fun is at anyhow.  Cap archery in two weeks, travel with solid companions who can loan you a supply of decent bows and who know the value of Rapid Shot and similar buffs, and you will be having great fun in Darkfall within a week or two.  But fun is rarely "handed" to you in Darkfall, so choose your PvP and PvE locales wisely.

I recommend finding a clan as soon as you've "gotten your feet wet", e.g. within the first week.  Be patient during that time and remember that wealth is transient, particularly with an imminent wipe   :)

In that case, what you can do, is start now and becoming a destroyer. +40% damage bonus  in melee and +20% on archery against players with their staff equipped, but you wont be able to cast elemental magic. Biggest downside is the fact that you wont be able to buff yourself up and farming wont be easy unless you fight mobs who use staves.

Basic stuff you can get 1st to be ready as a destroyer:

75 GS mastery. Wont take long, specially if you join a clan with secret knowledge. Otherwise, you are still good with mastery unlocked anyway.

100 archery and sharshooter. The fastest DPS skils to raise in game. If your aim is good, you can become viable once you max this out.

60 lesser magic to unlock all the transfer spells: HP, Mana, Stamina.

Witch Brew: The best self heal. You must get 75 Witch craft to unlock it.

Begone: Best skill to escape or catching up on foot. 80 Greater Magic.

As for stats: 100 quickness is a must. Not 99. 100. Huge difference for melee archery attack speed.

As for the rest, try to unlock passive skills, but dont meditate wisdom yet. Once you done; in order, max out...

VIT, STR, INT, wisdom. As for DEX, its the worst stat to raise since it doesnt add much for archery damage, so raise it when you done with everything else.

if you have never played this game i'd say at least do the trial. there is really no better time to get aquainted with DF then now since population is low (and so is ganking). you'll be actually able to farm mobs and see lots of the world without getting one shot every time you put your foot out the door. also guilds are always looking for members because the population is low.

like everyone has said the grind is there, and there is no denying it. i've only played this game for maybe 4/5 months(with a lot of afk swimming) and never even got close to be competitive against anyone that ganked me. it always ended with me dead, and them at almost full health.  that part was kind of discouraging.

wile the game is fun (once you get used to the overly complicated UI) i just got fed up with all the grinding i had to do wile knowing that the vets just kept getting further away from me, but when DF 2.0 comes out i will probably try it.

No matter how good the game is or isn't, I just couldn't bring myself to give Aventurine anymore of my money. If these forum mods didn't care about language I would tell you exactly what I think of that pos company. Instead, I will just say that AV does not care about their playerbase and are the biggest liars and cons I have seen in this industry. I just thought that Sony was bad, but they don't even compare. AV has been stringing players along with promises of big changes ever since early 2010? if I remember correctly. There are still bugs in the game that were there since the servers opened. And recently, there has been a 1 second delay on everything. This has went on for a few weeks now and AV have said nothing about it at all.

Then if you can get past the epic fail of a company, the small playerbase currently left playing, since most subscribers have quit playing months ago, is filled with a bunch of elitists d-bags.

Saying all that if you do give it a shot, try your best to enjoy as much of it as you can while the game is still open. Because I have a feeling it won't be lasting too much longer.

When I first started playing Darkfall about a year ago I really enjoyed it. However, I soon learned two things. First, it was not the game that it was tauted to be. And second, the Dev team was just not forthcoming enough nor timely enough regarding updates. I really had expected a wide open sandbox game in which I could pretty much anything. What I got was partially that but it was flawed. PvP was a big part of the game then (and now I am sure) but it was most definately TOO wide open. There were few truly safe areas and there were NO repercussions for those that were just out to grief. In fact, I would say that if someone wanted a game that allowed a player just to go out and grief other players...Darkfall is that game.

I am not saying any of this because I want Darkfall to fail. I really don't care one way or the other. I just want to give people my perspective on what I felt about the game. Are there others that are totally in love with Darkfall? Sure. I don't deny them their game. But, it just is not for me.

Let's party like it is 1863!

I really enjoyed Darkfall while I played it. Had some great times, and some of the best large-scale PVP battles of any game I've played over the years.

I quit simply because I was spending too much time playing, and you really can't go AFK unless you are hiding somewhere in your guild city....and even then you're not really safe.

This game will eat your life. Not that this is necessarily a bad thing, but I have too much going on in my real life for this kind of thing now.

This is a great massively-multiplayer game; purely player & community centric and driven.  I had loads of fun playing it for a year, but be certain to play with others as it is not solo-friendly at all.

I only wish that it were more small scale clan friendly and solo-friendly whereby I could farm and set-up a brick -n- morter shop to craft and sell wares.

    None-the-less, a fun game.

  • OtoanOtoan Member UncommonPosts: 17

    First:

If you are a casual player and looking for something to just spend a little time on. I would go play some bf3 or mw3 or LoL. This game is definitely not meant for the casual player.

The grind is not nearly as bad as people make it out to be. Gold is the biggest deterrent. If there is another free weekend, you're skills will skyrocket.

If you play casually, it will take you months if not close to a year to become competitive. Don't listen to some people. They assume by competitive you mean 1v1's. Group pvp  is where coordination trumps character skill. I'd much rather have 4 destroyers with bad characters and myself that can work well together then some of the amazing characters out there that do what they want.

When you do get into this game: the pvp is the best there is. Only thing I can recommend is don't sit in your city waiting for fights to come to you when you get to this point. That's the biggest reason (imo) this game continues to whither is because so many people would rather sit in their cities jumping around the bank and trolling chaos racial then go out and do something. They eventually get bored and stop logging in.

About the wipe: like people say. No word yet. But I doubt DF2.0 is coming any time soon so it's not anything you have to worry about for the immediate future.

OP, are you playing on the EU or US server? If EU and a dwarf (or any human aligned race) we can meet up and I can give you a few mats and regs to get over the hump.

  • Sid_ViciousSid_Vicious Member RarePosts: 2,177

Main reason that I think Darkfall is worth playing right now is that they stated it will be like a new game so a wipe won't matter. This means that the gameplay and combat we have today may be gone forever whenever 2.0 finally does come out.

Even though it feels like almost everyone is the same class its still funner than other MMORPGs in many ways.

^ This seems like the reason that most people I used to play with do not play anymore. Everything that you do in the game takes time and even with a max character you still have to put together ready bags (one for everytime that you die which is a lot). I can only afford to play a couple times a week at most these days which can easily become a 2-week break.

Any who cannot make a PVP viable character from 1-hour a day grind for a month is wasting time doing other things. This could simply be exploring a different dungeon or mob spawn everyday and using certain skills while doing so which doesn't have to feel like a grind. The X4 experience weekend felt like a grind to me more than ever before because it was so addicting to hit 100 in another spell that I might use sometimes. I have really never spent time grinding besides what I did that weekend besides a couple days to get witchesbrew wayyyy back in the day.

Like someone already mentioned you can make up for being behind in other ways like wearing heavy armor and blocking magic for better melee/archery. This is what I do because I hate grinding and never really have. I have to put in more time putting together ready bags than those who have grind though because heavy armor costs more. To be honest though the main reason that I have not went the mage route was because I love my controls and UI how it is now and do not want to change it all around for magic. I have magic blocked but still have every single key on my keyboard do something or be some part of a macro.

I have really been thinking about going back to darkfall myself. Current MMOs coming out are a waste of time and I had a blast at launch but quit because of guild drama.

Is there still a big population on Darkfall or is it much smaller?

somewhere on the official forum is a thread about the decrease if i remember right...

Ahh I was in the process of downloading the trial and had to cancel it. Watching this Skyrim craze just has me itching to fire up Darkfall, but as someone else stated earlier, the feeling of HAVING to play and sucking you in makes it so that if you don't have a lot of time to give, you shouldn't bother.

Also all the different key bindings is just awful for my hands..

I'm curious about starting with someone else since I'm done with finals as of tomorrow. I've had a blast the few times I've done the trial - I don't mind grinding combat skill while actually fighting, but doing the silly buffs like 'enchant' and stuff just drains me.

I like how in EVE I can stop playing and take care of important things (like finals/midterms etc), and come back not feeling like I've fallen behind or lost so much time on anything - My character still progressed just fine. Also doesn't feed the addictive nature of wanting to shut everything else out to get a few more points on that skill.

How expensive is the meditate thing?

search the forum, i think there were detailed figures on cost and duration....

I wish that Skyrim had as many possible bindings so bad! Darkfall's controls are far superior to Skyrims. Out of all the potions, spells, and skills available in Skyrim its pretty pathetic that they only allow 8 keys and on top of that you cannot assign them to other keys which means that I have to go into the menu during combat and stuff wayyy too often.

I think it starts at 500gp per night and ends around 5k per night. I know I usually put in 2-4k a night and that was more than enough so basically I had to play for 30-60min a day to keep it active at all times.

Does anyone know a work-around for the "too many trials" problem?

  • drakes821drakes821 Member UncommonPosts: 535

    Thanks for all the input.

I'm having fun so far and I found a vet who's been helping me grind and such. Also I like the meditiation system, it's nice to raise stats while I sleep as long as I keep getting gold. So far the games flaws are obvious, but there's just nothing else like it that I've played.

Also Wartyxwt I'm on the NA server, thanks though.

PS- Is there anyplace I can get the client cheaper? It's $30 everywhere I looked...I could of sworn when I trialed the game months ago it was only $10 or $15.

The game client comes with a free month..so technically the game is 15$.

True, but I just remembered it being much cheaper. I must have looked at it during a sale or something. It's not a huge deal I'll still buy it.
