And? I have no issue with this.
Self-pity imprisons us in the walls of our own self-absorption. The whole world shrinks down to the size of our problem, and the more we dwell on it, the smaller we are and the larger the problem seems to grow.
Just be careful about EA forums. I've read about people getting called swear words, and the person being targetted by the offender, gets banned from the forum and all their games banned/deleted.
No I'm not kidding.
I also heard that santa claus is for real! but he is not a human like Coca-Cola suggest, he is more like a small troll.
Most mmorpgs I've played requires you to have an active account to post. Nothing new here, and I cant recall anyone ever whining about it, much at least.
Also, what does it matter if someone who's not paying you (is not your customer anyway) gets pissed for not being able to post on your forums?
It effectively removes the "I would have played this game if it was a sandbox game" completely useless whine, it's waste of post space for people who are currently playing the game for what it is. It's a lot better to get critic from people who plays and want to play your game and keeps things in the context.
There's always mmorpg.com for people who want to simply hate or for people who just dont like this kind of games, it's proven to be a good place for that kind of discussion and "reviews" and whatnot

Well since you believe delusions, I'll provide a link to support what I said.

The announcement clearly states that ANYONE can read the forums, only posting priveleges are restricted. You don't need to be able to post to read users' feedback on the state of the game if you're on the fence.

I got that. Which is why in my mock quotes there I put "questions to ask" not "want to read things at random"

I just checked, I quit WoW in January, I can still log in and post in every forum.
I'm not objecting to the forum account being tied to a subscription (which in this case is paid, thats absolutely fine), just the "active account" part, i find it silly.
Actually I never heard in MMOs of "active accounts" being required to post on the forums once you were subscribed to the game.
I guess overall I'm tired of game companies getting away with the kind of things that drive other companies into bankruptcy, whether it be buggy or godawful product releases, to some of the worst customer support around. A lot of people continue to say "hurr it's ok" and give the companies money though, so it continues.
I could be wrong but isn't this common practice for any monthly sub MMO, in order to post on thier offical forums you have to have an active account? That has been the case with all the MMOs, I have ever played.
So how is this going to backfire? For example, just look at this site for proof of how trolls go to other forums within this site and flame other games and basically ruining any harmony there.
I personally think WoW and its Kung Fu Panda/Pokemon Xpac is one of the dumbest ideas ever made in MMO history. It's up there with the launch of FFXIV. However I don't go to the WoW forum and state my personal opinion about the game. I would just goat players into a rage, basically trolling. So I don't do it, period.
Honestly, it's just my opinion and others may like the shift that WoW is taking being the right thing. So who am I to think my opinion would have any more weight then a true fan of WoW.
How is this anyway different from what the other P2P MMO forums do. Rift, WoW, Aion just to name a few has this same practice in place and has for years. Yet there was no complaining about it. Games like AoC, CoH, CO and EQ2 have went f2p with a sub model, guess what if you are not paying a sub you can not post on those forums. It amazes me that people will find anything to hate on when it comes to Bioware/EA and TOR. They are not doing anything that is not already common in the industry. You want to troll the official forums than you got to pay to do it, only problem here is you will be making yourself look stupid.

Fair enough, but if anyone really needs specific info to help make their decision, they could find it without necessarily asking (ie. search feature), or ask them in public gaming discussion forums, like this site. I understand that there are non-subscribers who would use the forums for legitimate questions/discussion, but if you open up the floodgates, there would be just too much policing required to filter out all the trolls, and I'm sure there will be plenty of moderation required even for the subscriber population.
Well I'm from Denmark where we practice freedom of speech. Which sometime give us problem, if you ever heard about the Muhammed drawing...
I disagree with this, pay to say. But then again on the net its so cool to be haters, make blogs to just hate things. Strange kind of kids this world is fostering atm..
Anyways i gonna pay so i can use it so guess i shouldn't care, with all the trolls it might even be better to restrict freedom of speech.
It's not "pay to say".
And though I'm not from Denmark I suspect you can't walk into any private company and start going off on the employees.
This is very standard. I don't see any reason why people who are not paying to use their product should have the right to use their forums as much as they want. They aren't part of the SWToR communityh and don't ahve a stake in the game.
If people want to submit suggestions they should do so through the correct channels. But I can't see any company paying for forums so that any person can come in and start making posts.
The only thing I think they should have is a forum where people can ask questions about the game. Still, "here we are" at mmorpg.com and one can ask questions or praise/malign the game to their heart's content.
and all free.
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."
Funny that people think there will be no negative posts.
Of course there will, go look at other game forums (you can look but not post) and you'll see them. People quiting can still post up until the moment thier sub expires. These are generally some of the worst posts since they have *nothing to lose* they are quitting anyway so feel no obligation to not spew venom on the boards about all the things they feel are wrong and should be fixed right nao!
It seems to be SOP with MMO's these days to limit posting rights .. but dont believe for a second the forums will be full of peace and harmony.

Heh yeah, can't let the "riff raff" in. Same mentality I hear when a game goes free to play to be honest. The people who paid or continue to pay will up their noses at any free players.
I guess I don't understand why there can't be a subsection of the forums for people interested in the game to ask about the game, on the game's website without blindly giving money away.

Agreed. But we won't be getting any trial account spam, either. It's a wash.

Same. I can't recall playing a released mmorpg that allowed non-subscribers to post.
You can always ask specific questions about the game on genre sites like this.
WoW allows you to post after you have created an account, even a trial one, or the new "f2p" till level 20, and post -AFTER- this account does not pay them any money or is not active ingame.
EA/Biowares is not "standard practice" in P2P MMOs
Sounds like a good plan to me. It's easier to moderate because the haters, if they are true to their words, won't be able to post, and the subscribers won't have to sift through so much bullshit to get to what they are looking for.

WoW does a great many things poorly with their forums, including deactivating dead accounts.
Now please stop shouting.

I meant accounts that are subbed, that's an active account as far as I know. I havent touched WoW in quite some time but the last time I tried to post on their forums without active/subbed account about two years ago it was not possible. Maybe they have changed that.
WoW does a great many things poorly with their forums
Ah, so EA/Bioware is trying for standard practice then
We'll just credit their staff with more competence than Blizzard, until proven otherwise.
I know, it's kind of a vain hope, but we can't make predictive arguments.

To my knowledge, this is only correct until ANY subscription time expires...then it's back to browsing only. And by subscription time, I mean even free trial time. Also, those that have "F2P" access until level 20 have very limited forum posting priveleges, such as the customer service forum. To top it all off, these changes have only been active in the last half a year or so, but up until that point IT WAS standard practice for WoW forums, and it still is for the most part with minor exceptions.
