Right agreed so that is why I ask the question as to what others feel if TOR is "next gen" or not? I personally do think it is as stated in my ever so humble opinion. Others do not? Dose that mean that ones who don't are they more jaded to the mmo world? IDK
There are many people who have played MMOs for a long time and want something new. So for them SWTOR won't be fun.
For many people however, SWTOR will be their first MMO and they might end up loving it. SO for them it doesn't matter if it isn't next-gen.
It's who you ask I guess!
"Never argue with a fool; onlookers may not be able to tell the difference."
In my point of view it isnt a next gen mmo, and i'm glad it isnt, it is an improved game HD WOW that used what some other MMo's used with sucess, that is called being smart and that together with the greatest saga ever created, we have the best MMO ever, again in my pov.
Next gen mmo means they will have features never seen, meaning some things will be great others will suck and in general the MMO itself will suck, the future companys will then use the best features, that where once next gen, and apply them to a normal standard MMO.
It really depends on how one defines "gen", which is short for generation. A soldier from WW1 viewed war through different viewpoints, than someone who saw war from the crusades or modern war.
MMO players, from the late 90s, still see the same elements that are considered to be an MMO. Have those features really been evolved, or even enhanced? In my opinion, the MMO genre is still too young for it to be "next gen".
Next - gen as in has an evolved gameplay system-set, No.
It's cookie cutter with an admitedly great story system bolted on...but stories come to an end all too quickly, it's the most expensive content generation there is and it will not be maintained through expansions imho.
Is it the fact that even no matter what gamers or the public says that BIO and EA are sticking to and investing in TOR to give us the gamer a MMO that to this date no other MMO can claim or take credit of generating so much attention.
So not true. If you look at the marketshare the MMO genra had back when SWG was gearing up for launch I would say they generated just as much if not more hype. Not to mention its not really BIO and EA that generated all of the hype. Its the Star Wars name that is generating all the hype. I still havent seen a commercial on TV (it may be there but not that I have seen). If there was then I could give alittle more credit to BIO and EA. Back in the day even SWG had TV commercials with a MUCH smaller budget. Rift at least attempted TV hype they just failed misserably at it taking a shot at WoW. If BIO/EA would spend the money to run ads on TV they would tap into a whole new fanbase of Starwars fans that use the internet for nothing other than checking there email and facebook.
As far as I'm concerned we don't have any next gen MMOs, SW:TOR isn't going to change that either.
There is nothing new beyond the companion system and the VO/storyline, take those away and the IP and you have a MMORPG that is just another MMORPG, nothing more, nothing less. SW:TOR isn't bad in its recycling of general game mechanics, some succeed more than others. VO we saw in AoC until lvl 20, having it for the whole game is a bonus, storylines branch but not to a level beyond that of some text based quests in other games, impact so far seems minimal and non existent in world quests. Dark/Light points are the equivalent of a faction grind. Beyond the companion system it doesn't bring anything really new to the table in terms of gameplay.
I got immersed in the story and voice acting, it does that incredibly well, I'm looking forward to the rest of my Sith Inquisitors story
Not much has changed from today's FPS's when compaired with old games like Wolfenstein. You may have different weapons, environment, and vehicles etc, but the gameplay concept is still the same.
So SWTOR, IMO is not "next gen", in fact no game is, simply because there is no definite answer to what "next gen" is in what we regard as an MMO. All games these days for minor evolution build on previous models with slight improvements.
Oh, and "next gen" doesn't have to mean it's successful. A game or anything could be "next gen" but may not appeal to everyone.

companion system isnt even a new feature to MMO's. Sure maybe its been enhanced some, but I had a companion back in FFXI. many years ago.

ToR is a well-executed current gen game that should have a large market appeal. It may do the story better, and it certainly has more VO than any previous MMO, but I don't see any substantial leap from what has come before. I have high hopes for GW2, but it is still in development. I will end up playing both ToR and GW2.
Is it the fact that even no matter what gamers or the public says that BIO and EA are sticking to and investing in TOR to give us the gamer a MMO that to this date no other MMO can claim or take credit of generating so much attention.

I based this on the "hype" generated by the fans, forums like this etc not by BIO or EA hype on TOR you are right so far I also have not seen any commercials for TOR but they did hype the game by beta testing and the emails that we all wished to receive also by its web site it "Hype" it very much so.
Not much has changed from today's FPS's when compaired with old games like Wolfenstein. You may have different weapons, environment, and vehicles etc, but the gameplay concept is still the same.
I disagree. FPSs have added multiplayer elements, and features like clan wars in WoT take FPS games far beyond where they were when Wolfenstein came out. ToR doesn't really add anything innovative or new to the MMO genre. It is a good example of what a modern theme park MMO should be. The game runs better than any other beta I've tried.
In my humble opinion, for any game to be "Nex-Gen" its graphics must be atleast cutting edge if not better than all else at the time. TOR is utterly fail in this.
Not to say I wont play, cuz a blaster and lightsaber best a sword and bow any day.
there are too many definitions of next generation out there.
In terms of graphics defining generations you really need to look at the shifts in how graphics were approached. If UO and L1 were first generation because they used an isometric point of view and Everquest and on were second gen because it was real 3d then what is or was 3rd gen, just higher quality graphics? I am not sure where the line would be drawn.
Another way to view MMO generations would be to look at who the current trend setter is. When most other games start to base themselves largely on an identifiable source then that might be a good way to define a generation. While that source of inspiration might itself be pretty much a product of the previous generation you can at least see new source node for the branching out of the game. The first game of a new generation needs to standout some how, it has to do something different.
First generation might then be UO and the few that did similar like L1.
Second generation would then be Everquest. Hard to see Everquest now as that trendsetter but back then, before WoW, they really were very cool.
Third generation would then be WoW which very obviously took the mantle and has been accused of being the basis of ever game since. At the very least the set some standards for the industry in terms of volume of content and overall polish.
If there is a forth generation in this regard then it is only now emerging and may not be clearly identiable. WoW does seem to be waning but it will probably be years yet before they are not the biggest deal out there. Will SWTOR be the trendsetter? I really only see that if every game from here on out pretty much starts to do voice overs and dialog choices. Other than that SWTOR is a solid game but not very different from anything else.
I don't think you can really identify the beginning of a new generation at the beginning of it happening. You might be able to speculate that this or that game will change everything but you cant really know until it does. I think with WoW slowing down the time may be right for something new to emerge but I don't think we have seen it yet.
As for SWTOR? I think it will be the pinnacle of the third generation MMOs even as WoW was the beginning of the third generation MMOs. But I think they have played it too conservatively to be able to define the beinging of something different. Better is not enough of a shift to define a new generation.

I should have been a little more specific, GW had companions from the word go and improved on them with Heroes but they didn't do anything else apart from combat and play their role in the story. I don't know of any other game that uses companions the way SW:TOR does, it's new to me at least
"Next Gen", the next development, the evolution, blah blah blah....i was gonna write a long wall of text but wife called to dinner, so long story short, i can tell you that there is very few "next gen" things about swtor, more like old gen same stuff, but that doesnt mean its a bad game, no, i can tell its a good game, but ive done it all before...not with a lightsaber ill give you that, but with a bow or hurling fire balls...pew pew pew.
until we all have one of these in our homes, were stuck in this current generation of gaming.

You sound exactly like the people that call Diablo 3's graphics cartoony/rainbow, graphics are not everything, gameplay and storyline are far more important....period.
No it's not "next gen". The main reason why I say this is because of the graphics. It's a cartoon for crying out loud. I played the last few beta tests on my old P4 Dell. Even WoW looks better. I was so disapointed with the graphics in this game. Even SWG had realistic looking characters, and the character customization was so much better too. I can't call this game ground breaking when it goes backwards for the graphics. The 100% voice acting I loved, that was great and new. But it's not enough to over come the poor graphics.

Only next gen element swtor has is storytelling with heavy voice acting. That's about it. Everything else belongs to this generation.
