No Sports based MMO

I will use NHL as an example because I is Canadian and its what we do but it could work for any sport.

You can condense NHL to 3 character classes. Forward, defence and Goalie. You can condense those into sub groups. Butterfly goalie or meat wall. Big forwards with a physical game, light and fast, goons, passing and shooting. Gear in Hockey is as varied as it gets. Players get paid based on fame and teams are optimal for controlled "PvP" situations that span seasons. Content roll over is a given. Next season. You could train if you didnt have a schedule option to attend every game, you could fill in spots with NPCs for training. Really the possibilities for a sports based MMO are pretty impressive.

You never wanted to be in the NHL or on the field at a superbowl or at a Fifa event?

Funny nobody ever came up with one of these.

Street Gears is "kind of" a sports MMO.

You battle it out in instances and the world itself is an MMO. It works incredibly well (my favorite MMO).

I think it's more of a demographic thing.Develoeprs probably think that sports gamers are more likely console gamers than mmo-ers. IDk how true that is, but I think you could make some very fun sports mmos. If you ever played nba 2k11 or 2k12, my player mode is basically a mini mmo. You pick your position, design your character, then play games to level up your different attributes (like shooting, dunking, lay ups, contested shots, speed, str, ect. theres a bunch of them). Then you can bring that player online and play against other my players.

That + some sort of persistent world would be pretty fun I think. But how many others would think so? The first major sports mmo would probably be a console mmo as well. Partly because playing them on pc is a pain.

Well, one example of a sports MMO is golfstar.  Shot Online and Pangya are competing golf MMOs.

There are other ones as well -- dugout heros comes to mind.

The only problem with the sports mmos really is the dollar commitment to them.  They are NOT cheap, assuming you want to actually advance.

It's intersting you mention that too. MMOs have been itching and squirming to get Console in to the MMO scene and here is the optimal gateway.

    Championship Manager maybe?

Or play in those fantasy football (or other sport) leagues. They always pop around my office. Maybe not an mmo per se but I find them fun nonetheless.

    Go flyers.

Now would an NHL team consist of 6 (number of skaters allowed on the ice at one time) players playing or would it be 20 (12 O, 6 D, 2 G) that would rotate in and out? I think both would be viable and fun. Instead of showing up for raids three or four nights a week we could show up for games. Practicing outside of it. Maybe have a GM/coach positions?

    Go flyers.

Blood bowl would make a fun MMO, or a great PvP type to add to an existing game.

I seen adds for a soccer MMO, but I think it is some browser based crap, not sure though.

I feel however that a single sport ain't enough for a MMO. It would make a kick @ss addition to a game with another purpose as well, but constantly playing the same sport over and obver, and log on certain time to not miss your game in the league sounds like something that only works for people with very special interests.

But say that you make a modern game whwere players are soldiers, cops, criminals or something as well and you might get a great game. I could see myself playing a guy who plans bank robberies in the night and play a sport in the day. :)

    There's Huttball!

I consider hunting other human beings a sport so that's there.

Ted Nugent would probably consider kill 10 boars a sport.

Needless to say, I could see this if they could find a way to make a suitable sport that doesn't take long to finish. Like the many racing MMOs that are indeed out there.

Field or foot sports like football, baseball, and soccer.. They'd not survive the trolling from bored players.

I used to play MMOs like you, but then I took an arrow to the knee.

While it sounds promising, I rather not want sports based MMO. Why? Sports requires incredible amount of situational awareness, teamwork, and communication (at pro level). Two of that aspects (awareness and teamwork) are somewhat lacking in MMO, first one because of technological barrier, and the other social barrier (to be blunt strangers dont work well together). That is if we're talking on individual level.

Now if we're talking at managerial level, ie you're controlling a team and pit that team against another. It's already been done, best example http://www.managerleague.com/. There are others but I'm just naming the best (from my experience).

No one wants to be the Center. They all want to be the Wide Receiver.

I certainly think Football would have perhaps the hardest time working out as a MMO. NHL on the other hand has 5 constantly active spots as well as a goalie which would probably have a cult following.

The problem may be working around the MLB, NHL, NFL etc exclusive contracts (currently rights held by 2K Sports through 2012, I believe).

But hey, build your MMO in Asia somewhere :P

Self-pity imprisons us in the walls of our own self-absorption. The whole world shrinks down to the size of our problem, and the more we dwell on it, the smaller we are and the larger the problem seems to grow.

There used to be quite a few sports-based MMOs, but few actually last very long. .The ones that stick around are usually the off-the-wall ones... and FIFA.

    FIFA Online (EA)

    Golf Star (Gamigo)

    Freestyle Basketball (GameKiss)

    MLB Dugout Heroes (GamesCampus)

    Fantasy Tennis (Alaplaya)
