Rift should get mmorpg of the year award

MMOExposedMMOExposed Member RarePosts: 7,400
My opinion, Rift set forth a new standard thatbwas once held by Blizzard, for releasing polished contents. Also Rifts, calling system, and Events, are truly next gen. Trion Worlds has shown that they try hard to support their player base by giving them lots of major features on a monthly bases. The zone invasions were epic. Especially the event on Ember Island. What's your opinion for MMO of the Year?

Definitely agree. RIFT showed that the market wants a polished MMO that does certain things well.

    Can't argue with numbers. :)

A shining example of how to produce and release an MMORPG and while I had a pleasurable enough romp through Telara it just didnt quite wow me. Not much competition really (for goty) next year looks to be better.

Have to agree,  not too many games launched in 2011.  FFxiv was a bust,  wow's cata wasn't very good,  and the rest just got put on the ignore list.

Velika: City of Wheels: Among the mortal races, the humans were the only one that never built cities or great empires; a curse laid upon them by their creator, Gidd, forced them to wander as nomads for twenty centuries...

Yes, Rift definitely deserves this. Technically speaking though SWTOR is also releasing in 2011, but with such a late release I would give them a chance for the year 2012.

Rift definitely seems to have set a new MMO standard. Rift showed that you can have a good MMO at release, unlike many big titles in the years before 2011. The amount of new content added to Rift "a rapide" is also quite staggering.

When we look back in a few years time we can probably say that Rift was the first to take a considerable market share out of WoW.

Seems others agree with you exposed. To be honest i didn't like Rift but ill give them 10 out of 10 for commitment and polish.

Definitely yes, Rift is the best mmo around right now in my opinion but didn't it already win an award for best mmorpg 2011 a few days ago?

first off dont blame me as a troll.. you asked for opinions :))

    my opinion: no

why? i have played it, yes (befor it have gone to F2P)... but for me the characters are crap. i dont like the class mixing system. maybe they should have made it like star wars galaxies at release... skill what you want instead of choose 3 classes and skill it. yeah i know you can switch between 9 (?) souls for different combinations.

the invasions... the first two days were really nice... but it became "standard" really fast and its nothing new. because i focused on leveling up invasions began to be a pain in the neck. the grafics and effects are really nice.. but thats the only positiv thing i can tell about this game.

again.. i didnt want to troll but just tell you my opinion why it should be the game of the year.

    rift what?

rift had some potential in beta and that potential went bananas a bit after release.

the constant changes made on classes, on how skills work and gear pretty much showed the game was bad planned.

probably 40% or more of the intial rift players left after the 1st month done.. wich is a lot. means people didnt like rift, didnt like trion scrweing up their characters, and didnt like much the end game content of rift.

thus... voting No.. no way rift gonna be the mmo of the year.. ever.

I haven't played Rift but I voted yes to counter the negatives.

It sounds like they did a good job of releasing a polished game and pushing out regular content updates.  WoW has gone down the tubes, LOTRO is a crap pile.  SW:TOR is a big release and probably will deserve the title once it's released.

though it did show the market that the players wanted a polished product is a lame excuse to  reward them or even think about

it becuase companies should have aways known that consumers want a finished polished product.!

maybe they can give them a reward for a wow copy and paste? ....maybe?!

Well I wouldn't say after 1st month but like 3 months after definitely. And those were not just single players but whole guilds leaving it.

Rift had really great potential for good open world gameplay that with a bit of time and effort (not really more than what they put in doing instanced stuff) it could be really fun feature for all kinds of players no matter if you prefer PvP or PvE. Did Trion use it? Definitely no. Have to agree that raids there were nice and fun but that's it. Instead of sticking to their (as it seemed in beta) vision which were rifts they have chosen easy mode path of quick success but fail in long term.

So yes, game of the year also from me but not because Rift earned it. Simply the choice in here is between Rift, then Rift and finally Rift for a change. No other titles. Hopefully next year will be better.

Yes in a year (and no SWOTR dragging itself in right at the arse end of the year doesn't get counted) that brought hungry MMOers the choice of meals ranging from rocks, brick, dust, wood shavings, mud, or in two cases actual excrement mixed with broken glass, Rift, the "Toast Sandwich" of MMOs, truly deserves the blue ribbon.

In the 2011 MMO year, a year that was wholly unremarkable, Rift is a game that certainly had its moments, but with the exception of having a steller bug free launch, it was maninly a place holder game for most of us, it brought little if anything new to the table. Treating it as the triumphant gold metal winner for the year of MMOs is the same as rewarding the gold swimming certificate to the one contestant that didn't drown.

To be compleatly honest I dont want another wow, its static in most of its zones and has been going on for far to long.  I dont think mmos need to keep players for so so long, theres is nothing wrong with using up your first month of playtime then going back later and playing, doesnt make you any less of a fanboy to which ever game you love.  Theres alot of games to play this year, tons!, not subscribing through all of them in Rift is by no means should be looked down on.

Well, 2011 didn't turned out to be the great year we hoped due to many delays with the games.

Rift & TOR are really the 2 choices, and that isn't really fair since TOR is releasing a week before the end of the year and the player still will be in the honeymoon period.

But I didn't vote, either TOR or Rift is fine to me, both better games than we seen the last few years.

I voted no for most of the reasons you listed, being the best of the worst isn't a great reason to be called MMORPG of the year.  I guess if someone has to win the title fine, but I'd prefer none of the above, probably a clear winner.

Well there was not a single decent MMO released in 2011, so no ,Rift does not deserve any awards.

Polished, yes it was, but FFS , the game combat and questing was so beyond boring, the rifts where a joke, static and same 3 to 5 stages each time, and disappeared after 45 minutes or whatever.

World event were ok I guess, except on my server, zones were dead, and like 4 people would show up to the high level ones, making them impossible to finish.

People left the game quickly, and if any of the new MMO's coming out soon are any good even more will go.

But in my eyes this game deserves very little attention, but thats just my opinion.

  • DibdabsDibdabs Member RarePosts: 3,239

I played Rift and wasn't that impressed.  Yes it looks nice and it's a polished set of graphics, but that counts for nothing to me as I prefer gameplay to eye candy.  The quests were the same old same old - kill this, gather that...  The much vaunted Events are nothing more than the public quests that are already a feature in a few MMOs and the main gripe ingame about tham was that few people bothered to turn up for them.  I was often the only person beside one, and there might be times when another person or two showed up, but that was it.  The Events were largely ignored.  A real PITA when one appeared and you had something to do in the area already.

An OK game, but it would be laughable to call it MMORPG of the year.  It's like Obama - it would only make it because there's no real opposition worthy of the name.

I have to vote NO, just because of various reasons already stated.

However RIFT did provide fun for a few months atleast.

Sure thing. I especially liked the part where thousands of accounts got hacked during Rift's first month. Oh and the part where a player found the solution how to fix the security issues from Trion's end causing the issue. And the swift actions on taking two weeks to get an reply to a ticket and another week to get character fixed with rollback.

That is totally worth an award.

Rift was a very nicely polished game. I was looking for an MMO. And I thought that Rift was it. Unfortunately it wasn't. I lasted 3 months. And that was only b/c I did that stupid ass founders day pricing for a  3month sub. I was pissed, I thought 1.1 was going to fix things that were broke. Instead it just broke it in a different way (classes). Of course they did this shitty patch right AFTER everyone's subs came due for the first time.

I enjoyed this game quite a bit the first month or two, however, it became the same thing over and over again. I've played MMO's for quite a few years...hoping the game we're developing gets some attention as it's pretty much nothing like current MMO's.

  • ZefireZefire Member Posts: 676

Rift was very bad game from their open beta.

Although the release was much better the performance of the game was awful the gameplay was boring. The game was not encourage you to party and many many other flaws.

I think swtor republic had a nice open(closed) beta but there are many things to address for the release.

Lets hope the release of swtor is not the same as their beta and is a well made game.Otherwise ill have to wait diablo 3 or gw 2.
