No there is no mmorpg like pre-CU SWG.

You can find mmorpg's that are sandbox and have very rich economy (i.e.Tale in the Desert) but they have virtually no combat or combat is very poor and is side-game.

You can also find sandboxes that are mostly about combat, but they are mostly ffa pvp gank fests + their non-combat non-pvp features are VERY poor or even not-existant.

There is no complete game (meaning have lot of non-combat features and lot of combat features both equally iportant) like pre-CU Swg anymore :(

Not to mention that most of those sandboxes are indie projects, underfinanced, slow development, sometimes filled with bugs or exploits.

No AAA title like SWG anymore :(

Best financed, complete and popular sandbox is propably EvE Online, but it is uncomparable to SWG as it is very diffrent kind of game.

An unfortunate truth that doesnt look to change any time soon.

Any developer that tries to create such a game doesnt have financial support.

Any developer with financial support isnt allowed to create such a game.

You can thank World of Warcraft for this.

During FanFaire this year SOE said that they are working on a new SANDBOX title...hope they learned from what they did to SWG and Give us that feeling we had again while playing it.  I am keeping my fingers crossed for this upcoming title (which hasn't been disclosed yet).  I have heard it will be using the forgelight engine which looks real good on Planetside 2.

I am also looking forward to Archage...I am hoping that they can get a NA publisher and get it out shortly after release in Korea

That really depends on who you are.

When undead labs said to Microsoft that they wanted funding to a no Wow type of MMO they got the money directly, no questions asked. But they have Jeff Strain as boss and he sold many millions of games. Too bad he ain't making a sandbox but a very different project...

Get someone with a few million games sold and you can more or less get the funding for anything. Most sandbox devs however at best have a background as a low down programmer for a small company, and in that cases the people paying want something they really think will sell.

Nothing right now except maybe Entropia and thier business model is just too outlandish for most. The only chance we have of seeing one is if the Asian developers put one out.

Only single player games are innovative nowdays (Skyrim), MMOs stopped evolve many years ago : (

Not so near future unfortunetally. Still months till release in Korea + time needed for some publisher to pick it up and then time for translation for EU & NA.  At least 1 year and that's very optimistically.

Also ArcheAge won't be as sandbox-isch as SWG. This is ought to be themepark & sandbox mix so...

Anyway still I am looking forward to it, hope it's gonna give me long-term mmorpg fix :)

The only one I can think of, is SWG's closest relative, Ultima Online.

    Plus it is FFA PvP.

Not many real sandbox mmo fans about, one word "Neocron".

While the graphics are now quite dated and the class system not quite as flexible as it once was, it still has a couple of active servers with a reasonably healthy player base and is still a lot of fun.

The game actually pre dates SWG but when released, was an mmo pioneer and extremely innovative; not many realise Neocron was the first game to offer housing for players and entire guilds, true multiplayer multi position vehicles, slotted modifiable gear, an extensive crafting system, cross faction pvp, and even a playable stock market.

Sadly, the original publishers CDV did a dire job of advertising the game at launch and eventually went into receivership, and due to contracts prevented any further development from the devs. The devs have now released themselves from their contractual commitments and released a couple of patches to fix long standing problems; the dev team are the people behind the current F2p game Black prophecy. While BP has been a disappointment, they have begun development on Neocron 3.0 with a new engine based on the same design principles applied to the first two iterations of thier world.

From what i understand there are "pirate" servers for SWG that have rebuild the game as it was before sony killed it. Not sure if one is allowed to say that here but seeing SWG  closes down in a few weeks anyway i guess it doesn't mather anymore so just google it and you will find it soon ;)

Like most sandbox mmos are and for good reason. He didn't state he was against that though in fairness.

@fenistil. Yeah, perhaps "near future" was a bit off. Out of interest what makes SWG more sandboxy than ArcheAge?

Ah okay, didn't know that. Only heard they where working on it a while ago but never played on it. A real shame but perhaps it was cause of sony causing trouble maybe they will finish it now. Would be great to have a new SWG, with new graphics.

except SWG which had no FFA PVP and it was pretty darn successful. but hey lets forget that little fact.

  • JorendoJorendo Member UncommonPosts: 275

I prefer no FFA PvP cause it turns into a mindless ganking fest instead of letting people enjoy the game.

The closest game to a sandbox type I can think of is Vanguard.  Lots to do, open world, housing, boats, diplomacy and crafting, but still falls a bit short of SWG in my opinion.

except you pick 1 class, and you are the same as every other person of that class.  Which is the biggest non sandbox feature.  There isnt even ANY character customization, skill trees, AAs, anything

That kind of combination of MMORPG features died along with Pre-CU SWG in 2005.  Never to be heard from again in this field.  Nothing comes close to that.  Even the older MMORPGs that old school SWG could have related to have all been altered in multiple ways to make them vastly different from their original visions (i.e. UO).

The closest thing I've seen that offers the atmosphere of old SWG is Fallen Earth, except the combat almost feels as bad as the NGEs did IMO.

Sadly you're going to be hard pressed to find anything close to offering as much as SWG did.

yeah.....I've been looking for a SWG replacement for years. They don't exist.

And even if someone attempted such a thing, it just wouldn't feel the same.

Although I'm not a fan of the fantasy setting. ArcheAge looks promising.
