Well i looked at the other posts and i too realized something.
I'll never be able to research all the MMO's out there.
but you(collectivly) have.
My perfect game would have the econ of Eve.
The death penalty and polotics as well as crafter need(from what i remember) of darkfall.
The crafting of Vanguard(seriously, out of all the crafting mmo's I played Vanguard has always won hands down. EQ2 comes in a far 2nd)
The commercialabilty and development of WoW
and the lore/quests of LOTR or EQ2
Barring the fact the "Perfect MMO" in my eyes isn't out there. is there anything any of you seen that comes close? if not is there any other games out there that is comparable to crafting of vanguard. For me Crafting has to mean something. is not a money sink. you can be self sufficient with it. and most importantly there is a need for it in the game.
Good Luck folks!

when it came to crafting my favorite is Vanilla SWG, that was great tbh. imh it beats even Vanguard.
HA!
Good luck with that . .... best bet would be to properly support and develope Vanguard.

If Vanguard had gotten off the ground the genre as a whole might have done off in an entirely different direction, or at least split off into two branches. Instead it had a rough start, and SoE saw fit to keep it under the heel of EQ2 and as a result what was probably our one last chance at having sandbox MMO development keep moving forward was crushed. Now they just keep it on life support to milk subs. Freaking tradgedy.
Istaria
Great crafting, economy, community, and content in one game?
Nope.
I've been playing Istaria as it's the closest I've found so far and I remember it, but not enough people remember/play it, and playing and old game in a mostly empty world just leaves me feeling stuck in the past. I'd like to play something similar that's modern, but I don't see the genre ever taking that turn again now that the gaming industry is firmly in the hands of easy money development and the risk takers are relegated to "indie" status.
Wurm online is a hell of a crafting game, check it out.

agree, well sadly, i was new to MMO when SWG was around, i was playing Ragnarok back then
but Vanguard, is totally the best MMO with crafting i have ever played
So What Now?
Vanguard, Fallen Earth and EQ2... don't need anything else if i need my crafting fix.
How many servers SWTOR will launch with on release?
ShredderSE - Umm how many do they need? Maybe 6.
US, EU, Asian, France, German and Russian.
Subs will be so low there is no need for more
Snoocky-How many servers?
The first 3 months a lot...after that 2 i guess, one for PVE and 1 for PVP...
Thorbrand - SWTOR doesn't have longevity at all. Might be one of the shortest lived MMOs.
So, uh, EVE then. Where almost every crafted thing can be useful, and crafters are a completely viable way to make money in the game. And there is absolutely a need for it.
It's not a money sink. You don't build 5,000 useless standard launchers to unlock a heavy missile launcher blueprint. There are needs for crafted items from the very basic starting things such as shuttles, to immense undertakings of crafted items such as capital ships.
If you're looking for some sort of gimmicky meaningless minigame though, sure try vanguard or eq2.
The rest of EVE may not be your style, but for a crafter, I can't think of a better more meaningful experience to be had in an MMO.
