I dont like the cat people. It looks like muppet show and not a fantasy game. I dont mind cats in the game but i think it is wrong to make them look like humans

I personally like them.  They add a bit of exotic flavor to the game if done correctly, and it looks like you guys are spending much time to ensure so.

It probably helps to see them idle and move.  Very feline.  Nothing about them reminds me of Muppets. :)

I think you need to look up the word fantasy.

I tihnk they look pretty cool, but I like the very first Suwari (the one in my sig) the best, I think because it has an almost fox-like appearance.

I think they are a refreshing change from the typical tiger/human or lion/human hybrid that makes up cat people in most fantasy games.

I think that cat race looks purrrrfect. Will they have 9 lives? They really are the cats ass. I'm smitten as a kitten with this game. I hope they release it soon and don't play cat and mouse with us. Curiosity killed the cat, will satisfaction res him back?

Can you fit more cheesy cat references into a post than me? It'll be a cats game every time. Just don't mention Tennis rackets around Suwari, bound to get your eyes clawed out.

    Ok I'm done sorry image

    They look awesome.

Listen Asmodeeus, seven years ago, Ultima Online didn't even have those pathetic "quests" that you refer to or those "professions" of ninja, samurai, necromancer, and paladin. Nor did it have any of the neon crap, or bug mounts. It didn't even have any "combat moves." You turned on attack and jousted with simplistic swings. It was a better game then. if you can't guess why then just uninstall the thing and move along. - Crabby

I think I may create a special nemesis critter for them. Maybe I'll call it a FLEA!

Neat! I have no desire do be a cat ingame (even cats are my favourite animal), but they still look great ::::24:: Wonder if they will run on two or four legs..?

Looks neat but i don't think i'd play one, nice authentic look let's hope we some kind of other new race to be some kind of lost race..i remember seeing an episode of swcw and these huge musclar elephant/lion/ was going ballistic kicking ass..i was thinking damn that would be a cool race to be.

They look cool, I'd rather play one of those instead of a geeky human.

I usually dont play cat races, but I think they look great. And I dont see what you're talking about saying they look like muppets...You sound like one of those players that joins a mmo just to play a human, lol. ;)

I think the Suwari definitely look more feline in appearance than the Kerra from EQII.

Also, the more races in a game, the better, as far as I am concerned. I would love to see more playable races added to this game as time goes on.

I totally agree. The more playable races the better. Variety is always healthy in a game. Maybe even invent some half-breeds like Half-Centaur/Half-Dwarf races, hehe. Ponder...lol

We probably won't have as much variety in terms of different races as other games do right off the bat.  We're putting so much customization into each race that they're a LOT of work.

But we will be adding more races on as we go.

But we will be adding more races on as we go.

I think one area to look at might be simply adding more defining cultures to the existing races. Don't get me wrong, more racial choices are certainly something that everyone would welcome, but adding unique game lore, backgrounds and cultures for various sections of each race would really give that whole "unique character" concept more to work with. By this I mean having several sub-sets of each race that can be chosen at creation; three humans, three Suwari, etc. There wouldn't need to be vast appearance or statistical differences, simply different social archetypes that are supported by in-game story and lore. (I know the webpage shows subsets of the larger categories, such as the Qwi and Burian Stoneborn, but I'd love to see these groups even further differentiated).

Obviously, you folks have more awareness of your long-term plans than most of us do, so only you'd know whether or not something like this would be feasible. Still, I've always felt that the more rooted in the [particular] game world a race is, the more suspension from disbelief becomes a possibility. When I first looked at the Hero's Journey webpage, I thought, "Elves, dwarves, gnomes and humans." I understand that including such industry-standard races is sort of a necessity, since familiarity provides an access point for many potential customers. Even so, the further you can differentiate those races from their stereotypical counterparts in..well..almost every other fantasy game, the more original the game world will feel. The fact that you've opted to give these races their own names (Stoneborn, Ilvari, Suwari) and biographical info on your webpage is a good sign, and I'd encourage you to go as far as possible in that direction.

By that same token, I'd really urge you to move away from those stereotypes when considering future races. Simutronics has shown that they're ready to blaze trails rather than follow them in quite a few areas, and I'd really like to see what you'd come up with if freed from the Tolkienesque bestiary. Choose races and cultural details that would've evolved (or been created) in the environment of Hero's Journey, rather than those races people just expect to see. Really allow your staff to create something, rather than reskinning a familiar myth or fable. That freedom from tradition can open up greater freedom in storytelling, and the story is one of the key reasons to play an MMO (at least for me).

All of this is just my own personal feeling, of course. The odds are very high that I'll be purchasing this title regardless of how you handle races. I just wanted to voice my weariness with the standard fantasy fare; I'm not tired of the genre, mind you, just the stereotypes. Having been involved in MUDs as far back as 1991, I've really seen an awful lot of elves, dwarves, gnomes and humans by now. Diku and all of its derivitives shipped with three of those right out of the box, and very few MU*s ever changed them. I'm ready to see something new.

Regardless of your plan for this area, the level of individuality you seem determined to grant players is the strongest selling point for any MMO I've ever heard of. I'm very much looking forward to seeing the end result (or testing the unfinished result, should the random number generator land on me). Cheers.

I agreee about putting some detail into the diversity of the different races and their own "sub-races". EQ2 tried to do something similar with their racial heritage abilites but I feel it was pretty much a joke and lacked any serious detail and didnt actually give a feeling of really being more connected to that culture. I think HJ is headed in the right direction though alot of us know things can change between now and the day the game is set to storeshelves. I look forward to learning more about the game hopefully getting a chance to help test it in alpha and beta.

We hope that our first "expansion" race will be the constructs -- something you don't see much in fantasy games.

Exactly the sort of thing I was hoping to hear. ::::01:: Thanks much for responding.

Jenuviel adds another check mark to the "pros" section of her Hero's Journey tally sheet and stares wonderingly at the blank "cons" section.

Interesting race indeed. Arent those like golems?
  • HJ-ArchaegeoHJ-Archaegeo Hero's Journey GMMember Posts: 45

Yep, but instead of being made by mad wizards, im hoping they will be "machines gone wild!".  Then we can release spring break videos.

Ok, er,...hmmm, something sorta wrong there

(But to answer your question, yep, sorta like golems)
