Actually, they shut down both servers and got new hardware according to announcements. New server has same name and same GMs as old EE server, so it is bit more old EE than US server. However, it was big change for old EE players as well because of shifted dynamics and events now take consideration of US player time zones.
I think that population is now better than before merge but it is much more spread out because of timezones and people playing at different regions.
The population has gone up quite a bit since they merged the servers of course. And some areas are more populated than others. There must have been 100-200 people at the last event. Since there are players from 2 continents on one server there are usually quite a few people online even at 4 AM Pacific time.
However it doesnt compare to the number of players on WoW
