In the last beta session I was in there was a guy that seemed determined to ruin the story for everyone by dropping spoilers. After he had dropped two spoilers in quick succession I put him on ignore. Thinking all was good I read the chat again then this occurred:
"Yeah but just because you know that 'X' killed 'Y' doesnt mean everyone else does". Obviously the player didnt say x and y but the actual NPC names. The point is the guy I ignored I could not see his spoilers but by resonding to him this other player dropped the 3 rd spoiler even if unwittingly.
It was at this point I visualised hitting my head on the desk, but instead turned chat off and only put it back on when I was ready to group.
tldr: Don't argue with people who drop spoilers just put them on ignore. If you do argue with them you will probably spoil it for those who have used the ignore feature.

I'm curious if they will ban people spamming spoilers like that on puspose in the live game. Would be a good thing imo.

You pretty much voice my biggest fear there.
I plan to enjoy the story to its fullest and that certainly means I don't want to know that *SPOILER ALERT* *SPOILER ALERT* and the *SPOILER ALERT* *SPOILER ALERT* after he washes his spoon *SPOILER ALERT* *SPOILER ALERT* but the monkey didn't know in the first place! If only I had not known this before I played the *SPOILER ALERT* Would've made the playthrough a lot cooler and way more exciting.
Seriously, I don't want to know anything in advance and spoiling griefers deserve nothing less than a capital offense punishment. IP ban for all current and future Bioware titles should do it.
I'm going to start with general chat off and see how well that goes. I'll run the instances with my guild.
Yeah I would be okay with a temporary ban say a day or two, then maybe they wont find it so funny.
This I would think would be hard to manage though as some people will drop spoilers through excitement and not bad intent. Well for me the answer is limited chat until I've seen what I want to see.
what they need is a LFG chat group, and then just stay out of general chat, general chat in every game is filled with asshats.
I had chat off for the last 4 months of beta period. Only used it for grouping. Most stuff chatted about in general is mindless dribble anyways.
As a few have already said in one way or another:
The game already has an answer - turn off chat.
If you are playing an MMO for the chat, then you have to understand that any information in the world is fair game in that chat service. So keep general on and talk to people you don't know.
If you want to maintain the mystery, just turn off general and /say and only group with people you know. I doubt spoilers would be so insane as to whisper you directly.
Adding punishments to leaking spoiers is in my opinion not a good thing.
Someone please make a good MMO.
I'm gonna say "no". Turbine certainly didn't do it in DDO:
"OK, after X stops talking, Y event is going to occur. Make sure that you're flat against this wall or Z is going to happen to you."
I played at launch and got to about 6th level before this happened 1 too many times.
Could be argued that this happens in every game, but with DDO, it's different. Each dungeon is like a mini-raid that you don't generally run 1500 times. Aaaaaand I suppose spoiling via global chat as opposed to an instanced dungeon matters, somewhat. But the behavior is pretty much the same.
On the OP, I agree. The only retort to make is, "no spoilers, please".

Turning off General and trade chat will be the first thing I do. The story parts are the majority reason I'm playing this and if I know what will happen, then why play.
Those two channels have ZERO value to me in this specific game.

There is absolutely no reason to have a general or global chat in MMOs, especially something like TOR, which will be saturated with players. Not only does it break immersion, but people just bicker and piss all over each other 24/7. I always shut it off.
I prefer proximity chat, or maybe a guild chat. People can still "spoil" the game in /say or other proximity, or just be asshats still, but the likelihood is slim to none in comparison. People tend to be more social, and have a sharper edge at wanting to be friendly and interactive in proximity chat; think Cantinas in SWG, perfect example. I've always hated global in games, it never made sense and always made me want to slam my head into a wall.
This is awesome, a game with such a good story people should be banned for spoiling it...awesome indeed.
Everything I say is my opinion or personal preference. You may or may not find it useful to your cause but regardless I am entitled to it.
Turning off General and Trade too, will only turn them back on when I'm LFG, otherwise no intention of getting involved or reading anything in those channels.
So you miss the opportunity to join those same quests you had chat off because you didn't want to see it, and the opportunity passes you by?
Why would I miss the quests? If I turn the chat on when I'm ready to do those quests, I won't miss them. Cause it is irrelevant if others are running those quests when I don't need them.

Imo, people that really want to insolate themselves from spoilers, should simply turn off general chat.
Best bet is to turn off general chat, at least for the first few planets. 80% of the chatter there is about WoW, the other 20% is asking how to get your ACs.
A lot of replies about turning off chat which is what I will do BUT I love the chat in the first week of a new MMO. I know there is a lot of dross and comparisons with a certain other MMO but a lot of people are so excited in general it gets infectious.
I'll turn off chat after the first planet, the main story wont have gone very far at that stage.
