They just want to give a more distinct feel to each side, so when people see you they know exactly what kind of player you are. I personally like this idea as I've pretty much always associated green with lightside and red with darkside anyway. I'm also not such an intense fan that I have to nitpick every little thing in the game based on lore and such.
I think some color crystals should be restricted, but I think you should never lose red as sith, nor green/blue as jedi. You should be required though as a sith to be lightside before you can use green/blue, and darkside as a jedi to use red.
One worry though is people suddenly not able to use weapons when their alignment changes. I think that should be fixed. Either by not allowing you to equip new weapons that are blocked by your alignment, but allowing you to keep those already in use. Or by having it only unequip after 24 hours/after you logout.
I personally would like for red and green/blue to be restricted to each side, so that you can never use them, but I doubt that will happen. Still, maybe they shouldn't restrict colors at all. I mean, if a sith picked up a fallen jedi's lightsaber (or vice versa) it's not like he/she wouldn't be able to use it.
1. Differentiation between the dark and light sides of the force through the use of colors which are representative of emotions in the Star Wars universe.
2. It signifies affiliation with one particular faction, the Sith or the Jedi.
Red is a color generally associated with hate, aggression, strength, rage, and even passion.
Blue, Yellow, Green, Orange, and Purple are all colors associated with emotions such as compassion, altruism, serenity, peace & harmony, as well as any number of other "positive" emotions.
This feelings are associated with one of the factions, and as such, so are the corresponding colors...
Sith Code
Peace is a lie, there is only passion.
Through passion, I gain strength.
Through strength, I gain power.
Through power, I gain victory.
Through victory, my chains are broken.
The Force shall free me.
Jedi Code
There is no emotion, there is peace.
There is no ignorance, there is knowledge.
There is no passion, there is serenity.
There is no chaos, there is harmony.
There is no death, there is the Force.
Anakin may have used his Jedi (blue) lightsaber as Darth Sidious' new apprentice to kill and butcher younglings and the like, but this was done (in the movie) because the color differentiation was meant to signify some remaining hope of return to the light side (and the fact that he probably didn't give a shit at the time).
Notice how as Darth Vader, given his new and concrete affiliation with the Sith (which was sporadic and chaotic at first), he weilds a red saber.
I'm afraid it doesn't. I want to know HOW and WHY a crystal functions one way when I adhere to a certain moral code, and another way when I don't.
"colors are a part of George Lucas' holy, beautiful and transcendant vision" may answer why we are having a limit applied, but it explains NOTHING from an in-game perspective. Mechanics need to be explained.
My God, even FFXI with its inane "crystal war" (or whatever it was called) PvP had some tedious plot backstory to explain how those things came about.
A crystal does not function in any particular way based upon your adherence to the Jedi or Sith code.
If you are a Sith that does not adhere by the Sith Code, you are not a Sith.
If you are a Jedi that does not adhere by the Jedi Code, you are not a Jedi.
Given that the colors are associated with the factions (Empire/Republic) as well as corresponding sides of the force, they are used to signify your being part of a particular faction.
Why didn't U.S. Rangers during WWII wear German Army uniforms and run around with MP40s rather than wear their U.S. Army uniforms?
Because those items symbolize an affiliation with a particular faction or army.
That is why Sith use Red Sabers exclusively, and the Jedi do not.

I'm well aware of the fact that they wanted to make the sides distinct. That makes sense. I want to know the lore explanation for why Jedi and Sith only use crystals of very specific colors in their weapons. Is it illegal? Is it against their respective ethical codes? Do, against all common sense, no crystals of other colors exist anywhere in that galaxy?

So they should write an EU book, have a webcomic, or in some way have a canon explanation that "Jedi and Sith established the obsessive use of particular lightsaber crystals for battlefield identification" and have done already. Because it is actually not consistent.
Sith should only be allowed to use red light sabers.
...Why? Is it against the law in the Sith Empire?
Pretty sure you're gonna have to look pretty deep in the EU to find a Sith who didn't use a red light saber.
Not really. Anakin Skywalker. In the Jedi Knight video game, all but Jerec. It exists.
Were they Sith or just Dark Jedi?
I guess the debate can get pretty silly. I just think watching this video should explain perfectly why it's silly to have a bunch of Sith running around with blue, green, and yellow light sabers.

Mm, yes, well, I would have thought that such highly trained, telepathic individuals would be able to differentiate friend from foe through the Force. But whatever. I am simply pointing out that they have yet to actually give a lore explanation. From what we are seeing, the most likely explanation is that using lightsaber crystals of other colors is against the Jedi and Sith bylaws.

Anakin Skywalker in the movies is not an example of a "Sith" using a non-red saber exclusively.
He was using that saber for the reasons I stated earlier, not to mention it was a short and chaotic period in which all of this occured.
Such a short period cannot be used as justification for the Sith using non-red sabers, as this is not representative of what he actually used the majority (pretty much all) of the time after that period when he became the iconic Darth Vader.
Sith should only be allowed to use red light sabers.

...the defining feature of Sith lightsabers was the use of Synthetic lightsaber crystals, as opposed to the Adegan and Ilumcrystals favored by the Jedi. Almost all synthetic crystals used by the Sith featured a red coloration, as a result of the forging process used to create them, though adjustments to this process and manipulations through the Force did result in crystals of different colors...
The red coloration was also a result of the forging process, though it too came to become a tradition. The aggressive crimson hue served to differentiate the Sith from their sworn enemies; the Jedi, who typically utilized softer colors, commonly blue or green...
They have given a lore reason. Given the sith seclusion and the fact they didnt have access to illum getting chrystals for lightsabers wasnt practical so they made synthetic ones that give off the red color
the jedi use natural crystals for there sabers and none of them seem to give off a red color. the fact is this is the lore reasons
Even with access to illum most sith perfer there synthetic crystals they make through many hours of meditation with the dark side as they do whatever they do to make them. So u see very few none red colors on the sith side.

No, it's an inferred distinction between the two groups based upon their faction and force affiliation.
They don't need to say "All Sith use red lightsabers because it says so here in section 3.4 of Being a Sith Lord for Dummies v4, by Darth Sidious"
Edit: Someone just linked the lore / tradition justification above.
I had a feeling such a statement existed, I just didn't know where.

Thank you! Christ, that was all I wanted through all of this. So it's cultural on both sides then. That looks pretty reasonable.
My thoughts:
So in Star Wars canon, the reason dark and light use different colors is force attunement to the crystal. Green and blue cyrstals are found in nature and are naturally attuned to light side. Red crystals on the other hand are synthetic and are forged by using a dark side meditation.
So IMO you should be able to use whatever color you want but if you go against canon you should not receive the stats attached to the color crystal.

Gun color should not matter.
Really, I agree that you should be able to use whatever you want as there. But I'm willing to accept the restriction with the lore justification of Jedi and Sith culture. It makes sense in the context of the story that your Jedi/Sith character probably wouldn't be willing to cause a scandal by defying such deeply entrenched traditions.
Personally. All Sith should be able to use red. All Jedi/Republic should be able to use blue/green. If you're a Dark Jedi or a Light Sith, you should be able to use the other faction's crystal at your choosing.
Don't forget, the color crystals also count for blasters, not just lightsabers.
To conclude. I'll post a bunch of canon pictures depicting Sith wielding lightsabers other than red and Jedi wielding red lightsabers.
Luke Skywalker also has been mentioned to dual wield lightsabers with a short red lightsaber being his off hand.
I think the main reason it's restricted is to add an interesting element to the game. Plus I guess the developers, who are probably Star Wars fans as well, wanted to give a real consequence to the lightside/darkside choices. Even though I'm not sure I support this system, it does make you consider your choices when you might be laughed at for being a lightside sith/ darkside jedi.
Just imagine the embarassment. After months of hard work you finally get ready to seriously raid. The group gathers. You ready yourself for combat. Your lightsaber hisses out. And then people begin to laugh at you.
Personally. All Sith should be able to use red. All Jedi/Republic should be able to use blue/green. If you're a Dark Jedi or a Light Sith, you should be able to use the other faction's crystal at your choosing.

Restricting colors to alignment is silly.
Those pictures would be relevant, except for the fact that they are from a completely different time period in Star Wars history.
Not to mention a few of those "red" sabers are actually orange.

How so? Those pictures range from Exar Kun (before TOR), to the clone wars with Adi Gallia (after TOR) and beyond with Luke, Leia, Mara Jade and Palpatine (New Republic Era).
There was also a planet full of Jedi wielding red lightsabers before the planet exploded to a super nova.
There are also plenty of Dark-side Jedi known to wield blue as well as red.
Also the "crimson" blade you see in the pictures is not orange I'm afraid. Crimson is RED. It is referred as crimson in the description.
You cannot be a 'lightsided' character and use a red lightsaber/blaster. You lose access at LS I.
You cannot be a 'darksided' character and use a green/blue lightsaber/blaster. You lose access at DS I.
But one fact that people seem to miss in all that is that if you go lightside as a Sith, or darkside as a Jedi, you lose the ability to wield your iconic class colors. IE, a dark Jedi can no longer equip a green or blue lightsaber. A light Sith can no longer equip a red lightsaber. And, what's more, if you're making fairly consistent choices one way or another, it will take barely 3 hours of playtime for the restrictions to kick in.
The problems with this system are too numerous to list, but here are a few major points:
During the last beta weekend, I literally had groupmates in flashpoints who would suddenly lose their weapon. There'd be this moment where they were standing there silently, and then, innevitably 'uh, guys, I just went LS/DS I and my weapon doesn't work.'
If you're a darksided Jedi, a lot of the quest results revolve around hiding your evil deeds (it makes sense, since a 'bad' Jedi who was exposed would likely be kicked out of the Order). But, if you're forced to stop using the iconic colors, and start showing up to every Republic shindig with a red saber, shouldn't that raise a few eyebrows? In a game that puts so much emphasis on story, this makes no sense.
Even worse is the lightsided "lawful" Sith who can no longer wield red. So many of the LS choices for the Sith basically boil down to 'less bad' rather than 'good.' Why should a 'less bad' Sith whose choices almost unflinchingly support the Empire be robbed of a red lightsaber? Again, it is completely nonsensical.
For blaster-users, the limitations are just crazy. Why should a Republic trooper be denies red blaster bolts? Does Bioware not realize that red is the iconic 'good guy' blaster bolt color from the films, and that green is used by the bad dudes?
Finally, for people who don't want to see tons of Jedi with red sabers and tons of Sith with green/blue, these limits actually encourage the 'rainbow effect,' since so many players will, upon achieving lightside/darkside I, be forced out of their choice colors. For fans of the films, these restrictions don't make any sense, either.
I expect this issue to grow in magnitude about 3 days after launch when a sizable number of players are suddenly forced out of their colors based on the decisions they made -- decisions that should never have been linked to color in the first place. Lucas himself has stated that lightsaber crystals aren't bound to faction or affiliation -- anyone can use anything. If the contrary were the case, Anakin couldn't have used Dooku's saber to kill him, couldn't have continued to use his blue saber to slaughter younglings/fight Obi-Wan, couldn't have ignited Luke's green lightsaber, etc. The point is, these restrictions don't make any sense and, what's more, they force people to abandon the colors that they feel are iconic for their class.
I mean, Jesus, imagine the Deceived trailer when the Sith transport's door opens. All the lightsabers ignite red except 2 guys in the back who went lightside, and they ignite green and blue. That'd be an awesome way to ruin an iconic moment, right?
if you just dont put a green or blue crystal into a sith saber its red by default, and if you dont put a red crystal in a jedi saber its blue or green by default depending on type. they dont make vanilla white blades, they have a base default color, and the low level generic red blue and green crystals offer all of 30 hp at most so who cares, just pop the crystal out and go with generic red green or blue based on faction and sword type.
Personally. All Sith should be able to use red. All Jedi/Republic should be able to use blue/green. If you're a Dark Jedi or a Light Sith, you should be able to use the other faction's crystal at your choosing.

The only picture which is slightly applicable is the Exar Kun one, however, it is still not from the exact time period in which this game takes place.
The majority of the other pictures are still of orange sabers.

He was using that saber for the reasons I stated earlier, not to mention it was a short and chaotic period in which all of this occured.
Such a short period cannot be used as justification for the Sith using non-red sabers, as this is not representative of what he actually used the majority (pretty much all) of the time after that period when he became the iconic Darth Vader.
...the defining feature of Sith lightsabers was the use of Synthetic lightsaber crystals, as opposed to the Adegan and Ilum crystals favored by the Jedi.

Thank you! Christ, that was all I wanted through all of this. So it's cultural on both sides then. That looks pretty reasonable.
+1
Seeing as you choose whether or not to make dark or light side choices...no. Not bothered in the slightest.
Argh
This topic has been done to death.
Restricting colors to alignment is silly.

Whine carebears, hoop and holler, it always changed things in WoW and it will here.
Geesh. Fucking colored fake swords?
I used to play MMOs like you, but then I took an arrow to the knee.
if you just dont put a green or blue crystal into a sith saber its red by default, and if you dont put a red crystal in a jedi saber its blue or green by default depending on type. they dont make vanilla white blades, they have a base default color, and the low level generic red blue and green crystals offer all of 30 hp at most so who cares, just pop the crystal out and go with generic red green or blue based on faction and sword type.
The only picture which is slightly applicable is the Exar Kun one, however, it is still not from the exact time period in which this game takes place.
The majority of the other pictures are still of orange sabers.
