Not going to debate if GW is any good, the fanboys will pounce all over this and tell you to buy it yesterday. Truth be told, yes its free to play once you purchase it, but its not like a normal mmorpg. Its far simpler than a pay to play game. Otherwise, its fairly good. Just dont expect to play 3+ hours a day for 6months if thats your playing style with typical mmog's.

If you have that kind of cash just sitting around, sure, why not? I consider GW a side game, something to be played when you want to take a break from your regular MMORPG. Like above poster I'm not gunna go into whether it's good or not, those GW fans are ruthless.

As already stated this isnt gonna be anybodys main game lol but it is well worth the £20 for the quests alone(it plays like a rpg like diablo etc for single player content)

Then when u reach lvl 20 u have that character forever that u can use to log in to pvp etc.

I have to put me in line with the previous posters. GW is free once you have boughed it. There will be expansions with new skills and so on wich you need when you want those to use. So completely free it isn't either, but at least it is your choice and you don't need the expansions ;)

I play it from time to time just to kill some quick time if I don't have the timeframe that day to play one of my real MMORPGs. You can just jump into GW and do a missions or just explore a bit. All done under half an hour and you have done something.

Think of GW more like CS. You jump on, play same map for the 1 millionth time with the same 4 other people (if your in a good clan) and still have same adrenalin pumping fun you did when you first played. Thats how i see GW, excellent replay value as far as the actual guild waring goes. (the better the guild your in the more fun you'll find yourself having).

If you dont have a FPS background, think of it like this:

Casual MMORPG (not in traditional sense, non-the-less an mmorpg) with lay back gameplay that "Cuts the Crap" ie: no grinding, no farming, just STRAIGHT to having fun image

If you one who likes to be recognized for the the amount of time they're have played a game for "respect" then look else where, say EQ II or EVE.

Either way, you cant really complain for a game of this quality that has no monthly fees.

GW appeals to a large mix of gamers, hence large sales that still continue, yes it WONT be for everyone, no game is. But chances are you'll have alot of fun with this one. I'd reccomend it, you sound like a casual gamer, in any case, look into it first before you buy.

Got to admit that the above posts paint a decent picture of GW.

It is a good casual game, probably not deep enough for long-term heavy play but still fun and is good for a quickie game.

Witty saying to amuse you goes here.

If you like Diablo II then you will like Guild Wars. They are the same type of game. You hook up in town with a group of up to 8 players, then you go off into a game instance where it is just your group playing. That is the reason Guild Wars is able to offer the game without a monthly charge. They have no big server bills to maintain. You are playing within the client on your machine just like Diablo II on Battlenet.

GW is fun but extraordinarly limited. If you're looking for a fleshed-out world with deep backstory and lore, this isn't it. If you like roaming a world populated with other people, this isn't it. Everyplace except the cities are instanced, which means you will only see yourself and whoever you're grouped with in the wilderness. You won't ever see anyone else. It sort of boiled out the MMO part of MMORPG, in a way. Comparing it to DiabloII is pretty accurate. Fire it up with the same mentality you would, say, Diablo 2 or Unreal Tournament -- to toss off an hour or two of fun violence.

It's an ok game but I chose not to buy it. Honestly if I have time to hop on an MMO it's not going to be GuildWars... I'd rather hop on one I pay for that has a ton more content. Then again I have the SOE pass so if I feel like hopping on and just PVP'ing for seat-of-the-pants nail-biting PVP action I play PlanetSide.

Guild Wars has an incredible underestimated PvP section in my opinion. It takes hours to create a good team strategy with the right skills for every members of your party to go in the Hall of Heroes and win it. I keep playing it just for that. I think it's worth giving it a try.

Never got into PVP that was PVP just for the sake of it. I like having a reason to PVP other than bragging rights.

Some folks really enjoy it but if you're just killing for the sake of killing? Not my bag. Even PlanetSide has more point to it's PVP than GuildWars... and you don't have to level to 60 to be effective at it.

yeah i agree pvp should be done for items and for good vr evil or wars and there should always be sumthin to gain or lose

Um... I haven't gotten a chance to sit down and play GW since the world wide beta event so I may be wrong, but aren't there different PVP modes in the game? I seem to remember playing a variant of Capture The Flag or Capture and Hold. I think those are the only two PVP scenarios other than team deathmatch.

I've never played Planetside, but from what I've been told it's just one FRICKIN' HUGE game of Capture and Hold. Everybody I've talked to said that Planetside was alot like a really bad game of Tribes multiplied by a thousand. Again, I've never played it so I don't know.

There is a point for PvP. If you go in the Hall of Heroes, you'll win fame, faction and by wining all the way, you'll get the favor of the gods which will give your continent (America, Europe or Korea) access to the highend places like Underworld and Fissure of Woe. By winning in the different GvG battle, your guild will go higher in the ladder and you'll win faction points too.

It's a real pleasure to win againts Europe and Korea ::::17::

Guild Wars is an incredibly in depth game that looks shallow at first.

PVP is the heart and soul of GW. You can get a pick up group and be competitive. You can get a "casual" guild together and do a little more.

When you get a dedicated guild with mature players who design there team taking attributes, skills, player builds, and the team build into account is when you will actually experience the best part of the game.

Building the perfect team may take 30 minutes but once you are done you might be in the Hall of Heros getting your name broadcast across the whole game that every single player will see. You might go on a 3 hour undefeated team arena run. You might just make your guild #1 in the world commanding the Guild vs. Guild arena and make a name for yourself and your friends.

Most people will not last that long. I've had friends play for 3 days to a week and call it quits because they think there is nothing to do. Everyone I've played with who has got into a successful group is still playing the game. It takes time to prep and plan.

Also, there is something you get for PVPing besides making a name for yourself. The only 2 things important after you reach lvl 20.

You earn XP for skill points and you earn faction. Skill points you use to purchase new skills that are available to any of your characters. Faction is used to unlock skills and runes which are available to all your PVP characters.

one thing that i haven't see anybody post about it the extremily immature community of Guild Wars. because it requires no credit card, mostly kids from 12 to 14 will buy this game. the USA vs Europe battle's are like this:

"OMFG LOLOL, you n00b european faqs"

    "insert random french/german talking"

"LOLOL, you dumb people can't even speak english"

You are absolutely correct. It's the worst part of GW.

There is an extremely easy way around this. Turn off spacial chat.
This is easily done in every battle with 0 trouble and if you are in a guild you can leave it off for good if you don't need pickup groups.

I also played many other MMORPG like World of Warcraft, EVE Online and Everquest 2 and I must say that Guild Wars doesn't have the monopoly of stupidness.

Go for GW is ok the graphics will keep ya going get in with a good group of people the game can be really enjoyable. And yes it is free after purchasing the retail version.(0% of the idiot bashing it are morons who either never played it and are basing it off what they see or morons who tried it played it a few hours and just quit.Other than that it is not a solo based game so get in with a good guild and it can be a really pleasant and fun game.

Did it ever occur to you to think that parents have credit cards?

In other words, parents often pay for them.

p.s. I can tell you hate kids, don't you?

Kinda straying off topic. OP wanted opinions on GW and I that is exactly what he's getting. Maybe I should go back and read previous posts because I don't see where you're getting this whole "politics" thing.
