This game was the best MMORPG few years ago. But i think is it not worth of my money anymore. This game WAS good it is not good any more. Does someone still play this game seriously...
It's always best to support your reasoning with details.
What changed your mind? If it was a good game I don't see why it would change unless you just think once a game is old it becomes bad, which is your problem. I still think Tempest and Asteroids are som0e of the best games.
According to mmogchart.com 37,000 people still play. If Turbine is lucky it could get up to 40,000 with the expansion! I really don't see it being too successful since AC2's expansion did little.
Axes are slower than swords and swords do more damage than axes. It used to be logically managed.
The Spell Research system was effectively done away with.
No current really involving storyline is in place from what I've seen so far.
Leveling is way too easy now and likely more than half of the community is level 126 or greater. I mean, you can make level 50 in one day if you feel up to it.
They keep adding new servers and new places, but the lack of community base means that they should do away with some servers to bring the community together. Thus, every town is basically a ghost town right now.
Those are some of my complaints. They don't need an expansion; they need some heavy editing done.

1) I haven't played in over a year but do you mean swords do more damage overall? That's nothing new. Or do you mean swords have a higher variance? That's something new then. Axes when I played were a decent weapon. 2) Oh yes spell research was so fun too, using SplitPea and all. Get over it, it became a joke over time anyway. 3) Can't comment on that. Did Turbine switch to bimonthly updates for AC1 too? AC2 has very little story, I'd believe AC1 has lost it's too. 4) 50 in one day? Can you direct me to a post that confirms this? That's very impressive if it's true. Leveling has always been on the rise as Turbine tried to implement ways for normal people to catch up with macroers (ie. percentage xp rewards). 5) They added Verdantine like a year ago, and the European servers don't count. Someone said they are adding a new PvP server for the expansion pack, which seems good since people have been wanting a new PvP server for years anyway.
The fact is the game has evolved. It's impossible to go back to the original game systems with all of the new things that Turbine has added. Also it's impossible to make everyone happy and balance the game completely especially since the amount of armor, weapons, and skills is so diverse and everyone has access to almost anything.
I have to agree and disagree with you all. I remember there once was a time when when you could be rumaging through the wilderness and run into a fellow player, and u 2 could level together, it was fun, but it wasn't going to stay fun, obviously it was going to get old after awhile. I like the new updates and such, but its like now everything is done by protocall, each character is basiclly leveled the same way-hunt here till level 30-then here to level 50-and so on. Characters don't have there own stories anymore, it's a sad thing but its true, and the loyalty is gone, people just swear alligence than get some items than leave. Its basicly turning into a repeat of the real world, we started out unified, now all we are are materialistic assholes. So what im trying to say is, its not the turbine who can fix this problem, its us, lets start playing some real AC, the was we used to.
1) I haven't played in over a year but do you mean swords do more damage overall? That's nothing new. Or do you mean swords have a higher variance? That's something new then. Axes when I played were a decent weapon.
I'm not sure. I just know that nothing beat the Silifi of Crimson Stars when axe used to be better in damage than sword. I've also had the distinct impression from all of the axes I had seen, though I never used the axe skill, that for a couple of years when AC1 was first out that axes did more base damage over all than swords. When I quit playing axes were a decent weapon too, but swords were still better. Oh yes, what did axes get when the bandit weapons first came out? I remember my bandit sword was much better than any axe out there when buffed with 6's.
2) Oh yes spell research was so fun too, using SplitPea and all. Get over it, it became a joke over time anyway.
Then maybe they shouldn't have allowed for outside plug-ins. However, instead of fixing the problem to repair the depth of the game, they effectively did away with the system. I mean, before it was fairly easy to navigate your way around the spell researching with outside programs, but after they "fixed" it, it was incredibly easy to do so. Just buy some scrolls.
4) 50 in one day? Can you direct me to a post that confirms this? That's very impressive if it's true. Leveling has always been on the rise as Turbine tried to implement ways for normal people to catch up with macroers (ie. percentage xp rewards).
I did come across one guy that said he was going to try to make level 50 in one day. He was working on it. I know from experience - making two levels a day with only the help of my fellowship in a decent dungeon in my 70's - that level 50 would be possible to achieve. Just get into an XP chain (which I was never in, save for putting my mule in one and even then I had to level him up since he wasn't above anyone other than my own characters), have an allegiance mule give you a bunch of items to turn in for experience, be in a fellowship constantly with buff bots, etc. Also, have two people play the same character. There are plenty of little intricate things you can do to get ahead of others and powerlevel your character. My point is, even if you can get level 20 in one day, that's pretty absurd. And level 20 is nothing. There were people (I think it may have been Verdantine or some similar new server) who got level 60 in the first two weeks. I personally saw a level 40 or so around the first two weeks and talked to him. Now remember that's a beginning server. There were no level 126 buff bots to buff level 1s or 5s with 7s and 8s.
By the way, I just checked the server list on zone.com. Has Turbine done away with some servers?
The fact is the game has evolved.
The fact is the game has evolved in some instances and has devolved in others. I like the armor tinkering system, but I don't like to see base al 350 amuli armor off of loot drops when nexus armor in the old days was something akin to al 270. Granted, I know that all good things can not last forever in this world, but I think the best update they could do right now is one that would bring at least one server back to its former days and see how many people play it again.
Also it's impossible to make everyone happy and balance the game completely especially since the amount of armor, weapons, and skills is so diverse and everyone has access to almost anything.
You're right. It probably is impossible to make everyone happy, but I bet they could well make a great number of people happy if they took a word of advice from their old playerbase.
So what im trying to say is, its not the turbine who can fix this problem, its us, lets start playing some real AC, the was we used to.
You are right, DS311, but I believe you are also wrong. The community plays a large part in any online interactive game, but Turbine should take measures to correct the errors made on their own part. I think now is the time when players should start roleplaying a little more and not complaining as much, but I also think that now is the time that Turbine should start making a large number of community polls.
"Put your foot where your mouth is." - Wisdom from my grandfather "Paper or plastic? ... because I'm afraid I'll have to suffocate you unless you put this bag on your head..." - Ethnitrek AC1: Wierding from Harvestgain
AC1 isn't on the Zone anymore. Turbine has their own servers and launcher. If you want to start playing again with an old Zone account you have to goto ac.turbinegames.com and migrate the old account.
Also we can all remember how simple and mysterious AC1 was when we first started. Now things are different, there's a process that has developed and people found what works best. It happens in every game. There's no way to recapture the newbie days so don't blame Turbine for that.
Turbine has done an excellent job of updating the game, keeping it fresh, and attempting to make everyone happy.
I'll start coming up with some ideas to see if anyone else would like them. Here's what I think should be done with AC1. There should be only one server which this should affect to begin with. If more people start rejoining AC1 again because of this, then more servers should be added. Simple.
The Asheron's Call series has always been centered around the land of Dereth. I think that it should now revolve around Ispar. There should be something in the storyline that draws people back to Dereth through a portal or some such thing summoned by Asheron to Ispar. Then the best of both the old game and the updated game should be taken and that should be how the game begins. This would add new content for even the most seasoned AC players. Here are some things I think are the best of both the old and the new versions of AC1 (and some things I'd like to add):
Quests that largely effect the main storyline should not be able to be done multiple times - such as Garelin (sp?) being defeated over and over again by any common 126 that decides to run by and defeat him for some experience. This also means that there should not be multiple olthoi queen heads decking the walls of an allegiance mansion (so to speak). There is one queen. When or if she is killed, she should be dead. The end.
Common loot generated armor should not exceed (in AL) a unique quest generated set of armor that appears only once for each server. That's just not common sense. Some exceptions might apply...
Every weapon should be logically managed. If a certain category of weapon has, as its only redeemable attribute, its damage above all others, then the dagger category should not be able to have more damage than it since daggers are used for speed.
There should be armor tinkering, but perhaps its extent (added 200 AL max) could be toned down a bit or perhaps they could make it a little harder to bring it up 200 points.
The common update should not consist of better equipment and bigger and badder monsters. That's a cliche that should be avoided (but not entirely).
Now this is on the player's part - they should complain very little. If they wish to complain, then they should Email Turbine consistently and not complain to other players who are trying to enjoy the game. The player should also be encouraged to roleplay and should encourage his/her fellow players to roleplay a bit. Perhaps OOC comments should be kept to personal messages?
Bots should be done away with. If a player wants to play, they SHOULD PLAY and not macro their character to level 80 and then ask where the hub (or sub, if you will) is... That is another burden on the community.
There should be little tolerance (if any) to third party programs (if I'm using that correctly).
The Spell Research system should come back and people should get experience for researching spells. The Spell Component system should come back as well.
Fishing should be a real skill that you can raise with experience. Also, you should continue to be able to throw BD6'd minnows at monsters and creatures...
There should be no max level, but the experience system should be set up where it should have severe diminishing returns past level 126. If you want to keep working on your character, then go ahead, but this isn't going to become another Race War Kingdoms with level 100,000s as common place.
Housing should remain, except it should be part of the crafting system. You should be able to build your house and you can choose from cottages to mansions, etc. Also, the only thing that should be taxed is the house itself after it is built. Here's how it should work: It costs a good deal of money to buy the land. Once you buy the land, the land is not taxed so you keep the land for as long as you have the character that first purchased the land or for as long as you do not give (or sell) it to anyone else. When you build the house, then the house is the thing that should be taxed (so to speak). You should have to maintain it (not with money) with crafting supplies. This means you have to work on it to keep it up and not become run-down. Eventually, if you neglect it enough, you will lose your house as it "crumbles" to the ground. You will also lose the items in your house, but you will keep the property.
Fewer portals should be in place. They should be a thing of mystery and awe when you come across one - not simply a portal to your basement, etc. That's just stupid.
Experience should be given for things other than combat that require your full attention. However, if the thing you are doing is not as dangerous as combat, then there should be less reward for doing it. Example: If you catch a fish, you should be given 25 exp plus the fish you just caught and whatever it has on it (maybe a shark will have swallowed a few pyreals, etc). If you kill a drudge, you should be given 40-50 exp.
The world should not have an infinite supply of pyreal. If the economy has the full amount of pyreals in circulation as possible, then armor made from pyreal (of which I have seen) should be very rare. This means that pyreals will have a much greater value than they do currently. Maybe each player should only have 10,000 at max (on average) rather than each player having 50-100 MMD notes (250,000 each note). Without money actually having a value, a game's economy will revert solely to a bartering system.
As said above, people should be given experience for tasks such as cooking, and cooking (and eating food) should yield significant bonuses worth spending pyreals for.
So, in truth, how many of you would vote for this version of AC1? Venture into the world of Ispar with the same setting as old AC1 but with some revisions made and the best of both the old and the new? Remember, if these rules were to be followed, you would see some people role playing. Having a good deal of wealth would be something to boast about, you would earn experience for things other than solely combat, and level 126 would be something hard to achieve (maybe it would take 2-4 years to achieve for any one person). XP chains would be limited quite a bit more in the amount of experience that each person would pass up or receive.

Only a handful of players are currently questing in AC1. If that is Turbine's best, then I wouldn't want to see their worst. Keeping AC1 alive for so long is hard. I will give them credit for that. The game did get old, but I believe that some drastic changes coupled with a few minor tweaks, and the game would be back in all of its glory. Also, I don't solely blame Turbine. I also do blame the community, and myself as well. What I'm simply asking from them is a hard few months of work and a chance to see if they can make their game a better game and their community a better community.
There's no way to recapture the newbie days so don't blame Turbine for that.
Not entirely, no. But there is a way to bring back a good deal of the same feeling and sentiment.
Turbine has done an excellent job of updating the game, keeping it fresh, and attempting to make everyone happy.
I would say that they have certainly tried hard, but have they done an excellent job? How much time did it take them, through requests, to come up with some way to make thrown weapons a viable option in combat? They've come up with some great content, but they've also nerfed some things hardcore. I'm simply asking for the best of both versions and a new world to explore and a fresh community attitude (or at least a chance at this).
"Put your foot where your mouth is." - Wisdom from my grandfather "Paper or plastic? ... because I'm afraid I'll have to suffocate you unless you put this bag on your head..." - Ethnitrek AC1: Wierding from Harvestgain
I completely agree with you on most aspects of your post(s). I quit a while back, but I got to this thread by reading about the new expansion. I just think that Turbine screwed the game up a while back...one word: weightless money. I'll go back on that topic later, but that's part of the reason why the game started going downhill. I hated buff bots. I hated the "newer" exp chain. I really despise macros (those are for people who just can't play the game). And I hate the feel of the game. It's like a chain of grinding over and over again. I remember when you used to be able to level at your own pace early on in the game.
I remember the feel of being a newbie to the game. I was 9 years old. My brother and his friend had recently gotten the game and were sharing an account together. It was the best ex[erience in gaming that I had ever had. ever single piece of loot was wonderful (except for the alliegance rank stuff, I hated that). Fighting things was a challenge. A patron would sometimes take you out hunting, but there was no "powerleveling" to speak of. You actually had to work for exp and rare items.
I could go on forever. I quit the game before they introduced the scroll system, but prisimatic tapers seemed like such an idiotic idea. And the bags for spellcasting? What a stupid idea...that took the whole fun out of spellcasting. No more components to carry around...hrmph. Now, there is one thing I do like, which they introduced. The marketplace. Trade bots are the only type of bots I don't mind. Now, the system of trade was kind of stupid, you know, a pyreal mote used to be extremely rare, and a crystal fragment used to get you any kind of item, but that all changed as buffbots started poking up all over the place. Just load yourself up with a whole bunch of level six and seven buffs and go grind in nexus, or some other place until you get a shard. And also: the lifestone recall thing. I remember getting stuck in a bad place at level 18, and using /lifestone. I also remember the funny little "Pnf!" sound when you died. Now a /lifestone is a free portal back to your bound lifestone... Another thing that ruined it for me was portal summoning. Not in the beginning, but bots who just stood there and gave out portals when asked.
I'm not in the typing mood, but on almost every subject I agree with Adreal. Except for the max level, I think it should be set a little higher, but have certain things you can do to make yourself better at that max level (visit a special trainer who can show you something or whatnot). Truly, macros and bots are griefers in their own sense.
(Made a mistake on the poll: Yes means Go, No means Stay.)
I think the real problem is the fact that AC is an old game. Adreal, many of your gripes with AC are irrelevant nonsense, but the few that make sense seem to stem from the fact that players have discovered the most efficient ways of playing, the "new" feeling is gone, and the populations have fallen. It's an old game, guys. We'll probably never have the pops we had, or the new feeling of discovery and exploration.
The sword vs axe issue is nonsense. These weapons are well balanced now.
Spell research was replaced by a system that makes more sense, and honestly takes more expense and time than spell research. Level VI spells cost 50k each, and level VII spells can only be found in random loot. It takes time to get the money and scrolls you need.
The lack of storyline gripe is rubbish. You probably know nothing about those amazing and rewarding king and blackmire quests that were put in within the past 6 months.
The game doesn't have the pops or new feeling, but it has changed a lot with those monthly patches. Turbine did the best they could with updating various game systems in the face of all these problems that face old games. They added great stuff like tinkering, loot system overhaul, new wield weapons, new armors, cantrips, new loot chests, Valley of Death, Caul update, Aerlinthe overhaul, numerus epic quests, gem of stillness changes, pk lite. They added all kinds of great things, but none of that truly overcomes the "old game blues".
I think that some company will create an mmo that will cross all borders and expand the entire gaming realm but it will be one of the only ones of its time that will be good then all others trying to do what they did will suck and then about 15 years from then another one will destroy all others u see wat im saying :P
i wanna find an mmo to play atm but i cant think of any. in the past i played ffxi, eq2, e&b, Lineage 2, ac2, eve online, world of warcraft, guild wars, and some small little noob made made ones like ragnarok online an stuff and knight, age of dragons. anyone got an idea of if i should go back to one of these or find a new one?
There is little doubt in my mind why i quit after 4 years steady playing - BOTS - They ruined everything. turned the game into a job/market/mo money mo money - all human inteaction was lost and so was the game - for me atleast -- and Dam I miss it.
Everyone bitched about the Subway - but, the truth was, it was the place to be - place to hang and find a group, a place to trade - and everyone had to go through there so you saw everyone - you might even pick up a spam for something you needed.
I cant believe this game still has Bots in it. I was thinking about retrying for the expansion but never mind. Turbine still hasn't done anything about the use of third party apps?! What hope can anyone possibly have have for Middle Earth or D&D?
Bots aren't doing anything wrong. The only real bots are the trade bots and the buff bots. Trade bots are good because it is easier to buy stuff. Instead of spamming for hours, you get nice lists of items in the trade window. I find it so much faster to buy what I want using trade bots.
Buff bots are just nice so that we don't have noobs following people around begging for buffs.
Bots are not a problem. We don't have a social place anymore like subway because a lot of people have quit. You can still socialize in allegiance chat, and meet people in various dungeons, and you can still socialize in marketplace. There are fewer people than the old days of subway, but there are still people hanging out in there.
If there is less socializing and fewer people in-game, then that's why you don't want to play. Dont come up with the BS excuse that it's bots. Every mmorpg after 3 years gets bots.
i am still "playing" AC1. the last 6 months have been really bad, they keep pushing back the expansion. hence, there have been no updates yet we still have to pay for tha game. kinda sucks.
i personaly hate bots. the old way of tradeing was so much more exciting.
i am a sword so ofcourse i think the sword is the best weapon but i see what u mean when u say some weapons eclipse the others. Thats cause u can tink everything now.
the expansion, when it finally comes out, will be pretty good. level cap turned to 275 from 126. new races and such introduced.
sure AC need alot of work but i still think its fun.
The Red Rider - Level 126 Gimp Swordsman
By the way, i didnt make 126 in like a week, thats not how the game is made to be played. you should soak in all the quests and lore and take time to do so. I just made 126 this past year and i have played the same character since beta. Rushing the game is STUPID.
Im not sure if any of u guys still play but ive been playing since mid 2001 and still loving it, tried, eq, horizons, coh, daoc, eq2, and ac2 and ac1 is better than them all for me, but thats a matter of opinion, but was going to answer some of ur complaints/questions as best i can
About the axes, they lowered the speed on them just like they did on crossbows awhile back, they do about the same dmg as swords, maybe a little less, but axe also only cost 6 skill credits to train to swords 8, thus u can use those 2 extra skill credits for other thigns, this is also why things like spear with 4 skill credits do less dmg than axe. All of them still playable, u just dont do as much dmg in one blow, but of course if u wanted dmg in one hit u wouldnt be a melee anyway u would be an archer or mage. Rly have no complaint on the dmg on weapons except not all weapon types have all dmg types, for example swords dont have bludg dmg, dont know why they couldnt add blunt swords but oh well, this makes it hard for swordies to fight things that are weak to bludg like olthoi that axes can take alot earlier, it all equals out in the end.
Umm let me c oh yea recent story arcs, we havnt had one rly since febuary this year, they did several polls and asked if we would prefer putting of the expansion for a couple of months or continueing the monthly updates, we decided to go with the expansion. The one just before that was the Burun king one... it was a big one with a huge story arc that involved these great powerful being invading dereth, had a whole new race of creatures, the burun show up, which pushed the mosswarts out from around sawato, and they had ties to the falacot (i believe might have also been the derecost or however u spell it, still abit iffy on the lore for all that, the quests and live events were more interesting then the lore for it to me) lets c before that was the ancient olthoi queen, the one that had led the olthoi to defeat the empyrean showed up...might have missed one there, but anyway we have had plenty of them. Mainly though the last several months have been working on updating the game, they updated spawns, dungeons, quests, caul island, streamlining things to go more with the flow of how ac is, because no matter if there is an expansion or not most people are over lvl 100 if not 126 by now. I dont like all the changes they did, like the update to the frore quest, i liked the classic one mroe, but they updated all the rewards for quests to be more reasonable.
As for portals being rare and all, with the severs populated by plenty of people who can summon portals or know the shortcuts to get to these places why make them hard to get to, u just would have to ask in marketplace or u allegiance does anyone have a tie to ___? and u would be able to get a portal.
They have rly rly rly rly rly rly rly cracked down on combat macroing, if u get caught at it ur banned. period. Ive known some people to appeal a year after it happened and get it back, but if u use a macro program u better be sitting at ur computer watching ur char fight or u risk the chance of getting banned. As for trade bots, yea i agree with u i hate them and i want them to get rid of them, i know why they are there, i just dont like it, i miss the days of screaming around call "MULE SALE!"
Armor does have a max al u can find by the way, depends on armor type, but ive never seen a piece of armor with a higher al then 250 base, and they higher than base al the higher the work on the armor, and since u can only tink a piece of armor till the number of tinks + the work equals 15 it limits the max al. Also its rly rly rly rly hard to get much more than 10 tinks on something, ur just of busting it and destroying it and all ur tinks makes it not worth it, so max al u can rly tink something to is around 420ish. Though at that point 20 points one way or another matters little and most high lvls work more on getting a suit full of majors than one with a super high al and instead loot steel and good armor to make our lower lvl vassals and friends armor.
spell system, well i never rly got into it, i know several people who were very angry when they removed it, and i understand it, was a neat feature of the game, but they are trying to make the game more friendly to new people so they removed it.
Complaints about the community? well i guess ur hanging out with the wrong crowd lol. Seriously though ive been under the same patron for 3 years, ive never had a vassal break from under me, the only time someone leaves our monarchy is with patrons permission and generaly just to form there own monarchy which we still do quests with.
oh and the game rly doesnt have an effective lvl limit, u can keep earning xp and using it after u hit max lvl, and they upped max lvl to i believe 265. and they didnt up lvl 126+ xp to substantialy. It takes me 10 hours of solid hunting to gain one lvl right now at 129.
Here is the problem though, people who are playing ac right now are generaly very high lvl, so if u start playing now u arnt going to c to many people in the low lvl dungeons and areas because there arnt any, people who have been playing know how to lvl there char fast and do so if they wont to in those specific spots. One guy above complained everyone goes to same area to lvl and all, well if u dont want to go there dont, my secondaries are all under lvl 50 cause i lvl them at my own pace exploring parts of dereth i missed the first time around. If u dont mind being a newb in a high lvl world uve found a great game, full of high lvl people who will help u and get u going ont he right path.
What i love about ac is its what u make it, u can be a casual player, got a friend whose been playing since beta who isnt even 115 yet, you can do quests, u can work on lvling, on getting great items, on learning the lore, on exploring and finding all the odd things scattered across the landscape, or anything rly. And ur char is just as free, u could make a sword with war magic if u wanted to, no reason to do it cause the char would rly be any good but if u wanted to u could. And then with specing xp on it everyone on dereth has totally different stats.
Turbine is killing this game the way they did the expansion though. They didnt do enough on it and are relying to much on word of mouth and people interested in the box. Still all the preorder boxes they made were sold out within 2 weeks or something like that. This game might be a little low on players but the players it has our very devoted.
Ok well its 2am and ive started rambleing about ac lol. I cant get expansion till tommorrow and cant sleep in anticipation.
My advice to everyone who ever played ac or ever thought about this is a good time to come back and give it another honest try. If you do look me up on wintersebb. Joathan Calasande lvl 129 swordie
(and I apologize if i rambled to much or made no since somewhere, as i said its 2am lol)
This was one of the great games of all time. It was fun to play, and the community was one of the best around. I remember beach parties and climbing to the top of the lighthouse and diving off. Then the macroers and aleigences started to destroy the game. It took me over a year to get to level 50 (I was playing since the end of beta) By the time Dark Majesty came out I would run into people who were level 100 but didn't know how to setup the speedbar so they could heal themselves or switch weapons.
I remember when you waited till a higher level person was in the vicinity before you ran out of town, because going from city to city was dangerous. The developers had to up the content to try and keep up with the macroers, and it destroyed the game for everyone else.
What's scary is that people still think their opinion of a game means that it must be so.
"I hate it so it sucks" or "I like it so it must be the best MMO ever!"
Doesn't work that way. In a market of over 4 million players AC has managed to capture the attention of about 37,000 currently... and there's no telling how many of those are people with more than one account....
How, exactly, does that translate into "The Best"
It's younger than EQ and has fewer players. It's younger than UO and has fewer players. Yes, that's right, UO has more players than AC TODAY. In fact UO has more players TODAY than AC had at it's peak.
So how anyone can say that AC is the best MMO out there is flat out beyond me. It's a ludicrous statement.
It was, and probably still is, a decent MMO that has a lot of appeal for a few players.
But "The Best MMO" is just a silly statement. In *your* opinion it's the best MMO. In *my* opinion SWG is, in someone else's opinion WoW is. In still another person's opinion EVE, Shadowbane, FFXI, EQ, AO, etc. ad nauseum is.
There i no "best" MMO. There is only a "Best MMO for me"
AC is a solid MMO that's profitable and fun for a large number of people. THAT is an honest statement.
As to the OP's statement: Yes, in it's time, AC was a good game. But it's not the best and never was.

[Middle English destroien, from Old French destruire, from Vulgar Latin *dstrgere, back-formation from Latin dstrctus, past participle of dstruere, to destroy : d-, de- + struere, to pile up; see ster-2 in Indo-European Roots.]
Actually I'm just being facetious, but by destroy I refer to the first and sixth definitions. Because people found a way to get vast amounts of money and experience (without even playing) they spoiled the game. Those who tried to play the game right found it more and more difficult to play because the content had to be higher and higher level to keep up with the cheaters. It became almost impossible to get the really good stuff or do the top quests because you had to be upper level to even try. It used to be an accomplishment to reach level 30, now people rush through the first 50 levels just so they can get to some of the better content.
Don't get me wrong. I do alot of game reviews and beta alot. Asherons Call one is still one of my alltime favorite games and I wish that more people would experience it, it has a rich history, alot of content and it is just plain fun, more fun than sitting all night in a tradeskill instance in EQ2, or doing the same missions over and over in COH, or grinding out Jedi xp, (and then getting ganked by a BH and losing it all, which is why I hunt down Bounty Hunters when I can - ugg do I remember the pain...), or putting up with the 14 year olds that plague Shadowbane sometimes (maybe they just act 14). Or anyone of the other dozens of games out there.
Its a great game. I just remember when it was different.
I remember this game as having content and history for all levels of play. It completely immersed me in the game, and I still have yet to see an mmorpg come close (although I must say that RvR in DAoC finished in a close second). This game, in my opinion, has all the right ingredients for a good mmorpg. It also seemed like a good sequel was at hand (not the case at all, unfortunately). When I was playing it during the 1999-2000 period, I would never have dreamed or thought of buff bots or third party applications. That's really what ruined it, people who dont want to actually work for their stuff in game, and by work I mean play.
It was a good game, it no longer catches my interest. I think the reason why this game didn't, and still doesn't have a very large player base is the simple fact that it wasn't well known about. Simply the fact that it was in the shadows after a whole influx of new mmorpgs came about. Asheron's Call started fading right about the time Dark Age of Camelot showed up, and I never thought DAoC would overtake it, but I seemed to be wrong. Extemely wrong. Asheron's Call is a different game now.
I was a big A/C fan and played for a few years. But then it began to lose its edge.
Newer faster MMORPG's were emerging. Better graphics and sounds. Better playablility.
A/C was definatelty a leader but now it may be time for asheron to put on his slippers and grab his pipe. Maybe he could sit down and enjoy and nice game of dominoes with a few of his buds.
The expansion pack just came out Majestic. An old game doesn't equal an old person. An old game can actually become popular again.
Elnator, stop criticizing me for saying AC is the best mmorpg of all time. I know it's an opinion and not fact. And stop referencing population numbers. They don't even mean anything. If you enjoy a game it doesn't matter if 20 people play it. You sound like a mindless drone that just follows the herd. Take a chance and try something that is not popular. You might be surprised.

Those are some of my complaints. They don't need an expansion; they need some heavy editing done.

AC1: Wierding from Harvestgain
Blood Only Solves So much
1) I haven't played in over a year but do you mean swords do more damage overall?

AC1: Wierding from Harvestgain

They added all kinds of great things, but none of that truly overcomes the "old game blues".
i managed to stay awake long enough to attain level 93
it never was the best game for me UO the original was the best untill the hackers killed it
after ac2 came out ac1 sort of up and died
it was poorly designed it had good graphics for that time frame
it was just a monster squat level and repeat
trades were lousy compared to uo
thrills non existant
mundane the password boredom the outcome
pvp element was a joke
it amounted to nothing more then a fairyland for fairies like eq ac2 and eq2
today the companies are hard at work trying to up grade graphics and shovel another load of fairyland games down our throats
although i never played a red in UO at least it had excitement thrills chills and knee knocking fun
knowing that at any given time the reds would pop up and take your shiny piece of equipment
today so many fairies complained to the companies that everywhere you look the fairyland express is running full speed ahead
BOTS BLOW
People who bash AC love to use the word, "destroy" but it has no meaning unless you give it a good explanation.
It is still the best. Get the expansion and you will find out why.
What's scary is that people still think their opinion of a game means that it must be so.
"I hate it so it sucks"
or
"I like it so it must be the best MMO ever!"
As to the OP's statement:
Yes, in it's time, AC was a good game. But it's not the best and never was.

Sure I would be happy to define it:
de·stroy ( P ) Pronunciation Key (d-stroi)
v. de·stroyed, de·stroy·ing, de·stroys
v. tr.
v. intr.
[Middle English
destroien
, from Old Frenchdestruire
, from Vulgar Latin *dstrgere
, back-formation from Latindstrctus
, past participle ofdstruere
, to destroy :d-
, de- +struere
, to pile up; seester-
2 in Indo-European Roots.]Actually I'm just being facetious, but by destroy I refer to the first and sixth definitions.
I can't say this game is bad. I wouldn't have played it for so long if i didn't like it.Ii made some very good freinds whilst slaying.
The upgrade is nowhere near as good as i had hoped.
Graphics slightlly better and a whole lot smoother.......but just not got the pulling power that it used to have.
I tried the upgrade and i have to say "poor show turbine could have done better"
