The BEST video cards for EQ2 are gonna run you a lot of money, and even with them you won't be able to run the game very smoothly in all places at max graphics. You can get close with the following video cards but not all the way.

ATI Radeon X800 or X850 XT
    nVidia 6800 Series
nVidia 7800 Series (<-- Brand new)

Schutzbar - Human Warrior - Windrunner Alliance - World of Warcraft
Nihilanth - Kerra Paladin - Blackburrow - EverQuest II
    XBL Gamertag - Eagle15GT

Hmm, save a few more bucks and get an ATI Radeon X800 pro or the Nvidia 5800 gt. It is SOOOO worth the extra 50 bucks or so.

That's not a bad idea. I have an ATI Radeon X800 pro and while it works perfect for me, ATI's drivers and updates have been less than scintillating. One time I downloaded and installed the latest drivers and NO 3d applications would play because it said I didn't even have a video card installed. 10 minutes later I downloaded the same dang drivers and it worked perfect.image

EDIT: yes sorry, 6800 gt is the one image

I agree, I bought the Nvidia 6800 GT as well, and EQ2 worked just fine for me. ::::28::

I have a AMD 2100, 1 gigabyte of ram pc2100, 128mb Geforce 5200 and this game sucks on my computer. I bought the game when it first came out and they claimed that it would run on a system at half of what I have and I just cant see that happening.

My question is if I upgrade the video card to a ATI 9600 256mb would that make a big differnce. I like the game when I played it but hte graphics and performance sucked so bad that it just drove me up a wall. I can only get this card I have listed. It is within my price range and everyone who has it said they can run Doom 3 at full settings 1024x768. Does anyone else have this card with similar computer hardware that can play the game with no problems? Please let me know. Anyone know if the bugs at the first part of the game are fixed to the point of my computer with the first card mentioned would be able to play with good settings? I can play Guild Wars at full settings 1024x768 as well as WOW and no a glitch happens on it. Is it the engine of EQ2 or is it the card?

Destro it would have helped if you'd mentioned in this one that you don't have AGP or PCI Express, just standard PCI

None of the newer cards will run on your system, they aren't built for PCI and some of the top end cards aren't even built for AGP anymore.

I posted on your thread out in general forums that the best card I can find that will fit in your PCI slot is probably the Nvidia GeForce 5500 w/128 ram or the ATI Radeon 9250 w/256 RAM

I put links to them on the thread out in the general forums as well.

    Good luck!
But if I were you I'd be more worried about how much RAM I have in my PC.... If you have less than 512MB you're going to have a rough time with all the newer MMO's. And with anything less than a 1ghz processor they're going to be slow as well.

An ATI 9600 isn't all that hot. What's your price point and what kind of video slot do you have? AGP I assume?

Also, unless your buying a brand new card (like say a 7800GTX or MAYBE a 6800GT/Ultra) DO NOT bother getting 256MB of VRAM. Its a waste and wont improve performance much if at all. Just get something with 128MB. Best bet is probably a 6600GT...get those for around $150. I got lucky and bought a used 6800 for $170.

First off thank you for the reply. I have a AGP slot. My price range is 100 dollars. The reason for the 9600 is that it was 89.00 on Newegg. Good price and the card also has 128bit architecture 256mb ram and AGP. If you can find a decent card for that price range let me know. This is thebest I have seen. I am really not that excited anymore with Nvidia cards. I got this 5200 when it first came out and the hype of this card just plain sucked. I had a Geforce MX 440 64mb AGP and it runs almost as fast as this card I have now. That is why I wanted to get the this ATI card. If you read the reveiws for it they say that you can run the Doom 3 at full settings 1024 x 768. Thats great. I cant do that on the 5200 at all. Anyways if you can find a better deal somewhere please let me know.

Not to be harsh, but ANYTHING is better than a 5200. You definitely have found a decent deal. If you look around, though, you should be able to find a Radeon 9800 or possibly even a 9800 pro for around $100.

Personally you could never get me to use an ATI card. Their drivers are the absolute worst nightmare in the world, especially with SOE titles, in general.

I use NVidia almost exclusively. And you can get a 6000 series card for right around $100

At $100 I'd be looking for a refurb 9600 or 9800 PRO. ALWAYS GET PRO. XT is waste of cash, and SE/LE/whatever else SUCKS SUPER BAD. The vanilla versions of those cards are not worth $100 when you could get a 6600GT for like $150.

Get a refurb, MAKE SURE IT SAYS PRO, and it will be a huge upgrade from the crappy 5200.

Side Note: I ran EQ2 with ZERO problems for 8 months on a 9800 Pro. Never heard of any ATI driver issues with EQ2 before, either. No more than Nvidia has, anyway. Driver quality is about equal for the two companies now. ATI drivers used to suck, but that was years ago. Drivers isn't really a reason to pick one or the other anymore imho.

I play whit a radeon 9800 pro (128mb) and i can play the game well on settings between high performance and balanced. Now thats for the city zones. When i'm in antonica or so, then the game runs much better on balanced setting. So when i come out the city, i just put my settings higher. The first time you play the game, you have to play whit your graphics settings. It took me a complete day to find the perfect settings. But you have to know, city zones are much tougher for your pc. These zones just don't run so very wel. btw my other specs are xp2500+, 1GB ddr ram pc2700. It's an older card, but i really love it. I can play games like HL2 on high settings. But i upgrade my pc in one or two month. And then i will obtain for nvidia again :)
