I am trying Dawntide at the moment. It's still a ongoing project but i am finding it great fun. Will be being completely overhauled later this month so for now exp is x5 and pvp is on but no looting. just to try it out.
Hey it's free at the min so cant go wrong. Give it a go.
It was originally a subscription game in Japan. To bring it to the US, they seem to have given away everything in the subscription game for free, and then added some stuff in an item mall.

How dawn tide doing? I stop following it a while ago.
played Dawntide once when it was open for download years ago ( forgot which year )
all i can say is, it's totally still under development, no players can be found when i got in
while the feature is so promising, i think all hope is lost with the game, they took too long, and now with SWTOR and GW to come, i dont think it will have many people playing it even if they ever made it out

It's about to get a major grphic overhaul...december 16th or something like that.
It will be down for a month they said then back up again, so might be worth taking another look after the update.

Sorry to say, but it wasn't the game's graphics that were bad, it's the game's horrible coding. Took the devs nearly 2 years to fix some of the simplist bugs, and only a few.
To find an intelligent person in a PUG is not that rare, but to find a PUG made up of "all" intelligent people is one of the rarest phenomenons in the known universe.

no need to be sorry friend
I only started playing a couple of months ago so dont know too much about the early coding. But after playing games like Wurm and Xyson, it has been nice to try a mucg more progressed sandbox for a change. Wurm had great crafting, but everything else was pretty much dire, and xyson....well that didnt really have anything haha!
Other than that i dont know too much about many other sandboxes.

Very true, so few sandboxes out there, even fewer good ones.

all points bulleting is a sandbox alike game, its more like a GTA Online
what...what....what on earth....are you blabing about? there is nothing sandboxy about ABP. nothing.
actually there is. for people who might like to just run around causing mayhem, crashing & stealing vehicles and such. there's little structure to that.
sandbox doesn't always mean something like UO, or an RPG. many people consider GTA a sandbox. or minecraft, etc. its not such a narrow definition as you think. it just means literally, an undirected playground piece where you make your own fun.
This may not be completely sandbox, but theres definitely no lvl cap and it's F2P. Also there are countless ways to build your characters, which adds a very fun and addictive quality to this game.

No, sandbox game means different things to different people. Everyone has or can have their own definition. Your definition isn't some kind of supreme definition everyone else should use. Thus, some people will consider games like GTA and APB to be sandboxes, some won't.
I would recommend Haven and Hearth or Istaria as F2P sandboxes.
I am too looking for a new Sandbox. I am an old EVE Player, playing Wurm currently and took a look at Dawntide and ATitD.
What I am looking for is a Sandbox that is focused on crafting, like Wurm it should allow terraforming, it can even be more complex but it should also offer its fair share of PvE and it would be best if it had controlled PvP like Kingdom vs Kingdom in certain areas etc.
It should either be Fantasy or Sci-Fi.
I took a look at Earthrise but it seems they have a problem with player counts and are going F2P next year so got to wait to check that. Fallen Earth is post apocalyptic and as far as i can tell its a open PvP world, no thanks. Dawntide goes into closed beta, again. ATitD is great ok, but the Controls dont suite my taste, I need WASD movement, adding to that hey reset the world and are only about crafting.... I need to kill Monsters from time to time
Took a look at Isteria, too. It seems to me its like the dropped Horizons, great Game. Downside to test all of it i would have to buy a property owner account, also no terraforming.
tl;dr
- complex and deep crafting system, like Wurm
- terraform options
- PVE Content
- Controlled PVP; KvK, Territorial Warfare, Battlegrounds, etc - There have to be space for Safe PvE
- Sci-Fi or Fantasy
- Some sort of Trial to be able to test and check all aspects of the game or F2P!

I didn't say pretty much the same thing you said. I said there was no bright line rule as to what is or isn't a sandbox. I didn't give a definition. You gave a definition (which as I already said is fine to do because everyone has to make their own defintion), except that your post sounded as if you felt that your definition was THE definition, so my only point was that your definition isn't any such thing.
I think you misunderstood my point then, since we didn't say the same thing nor did you make the point that your definition wasn't the supreme definition. Anyway, this argument won't be going anywhere fun, so you can have the last word if you want it.

lol jesus man. reading comprehension severe failure.
i said the definition was not as narrow as he thought. dunno how that could be any more clear. and yet you assumed from that that i had a rigid and clearly defined definition of it?

Hey it's free at the min so cant go wrong. Give it a go.
I think Wurm Online is free not sure though.
its free, but with skill and stat cap on 20 (out of 100), ale you cannt play on pvp server w/o subscription, with exception of epic home servers
Uncharted Waters Online
It was originally a subscription game in Japan. To bring it to the US, they seem to have given away everything in the subscription game for free, and then added some stuff in an item mall.
Ryzom up to a cetain set of skill levels is free.
Godfred's Tomb Trailer: https://youtu.be/-nsXGddj_4w
Original Skyrim: https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/109547
Serph toze kindly has started a walk-through. https://youtu.be/UIelCK-lldo
haven & hearth is completelly f2p (if they didnt changed it lately)
also some semi-sandboxes are semi-f2p:
istaria - you can play only human race and cannt own a plot of land
ryzom - skillcap, i think cap on maxskill/2
fallen earth - not sure how it is with this game, didnt follow it for last few years and f2p is kinda new in it
i am sure there are more, but this is what come to my mind right now
Ryzom and Fallen Earth are 2 good f2p sandboxes already mentioned.
Mabinogi is pretty good as well.
