Star Wars Galaxies: Story of the Week: Star Wars Comes and Goes

BillMurphyBillMurphy Former Managing EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 4,565

The Story of the Week is all Star Wars, as The Old Republic opens its doors and Galaxies shuts its own. Read on for our brief thoughts and feel free to chime in with your own.

The Story of the Week is a tough thing to really write all the time.  Sometimes there’s just not much going on, and in those cases, there’s just no real story to comment on.  This week luckily, that was not the case as the most anticipated MMORPG of the year finally opened its doors to pre-order customers.  Star Wars: The Old Republic officially launches next Tuesday, but for all intents and purposes the game is live and humming along now for the droves upon droves of excited players who bought the game ahead of time.

Going to miss SWG and decided to skip SWTOR (for now at least). One has nothing to do with the other btw. SWTOR was never meant to be a replacement for SWG and it is not like a new KOTOR either, so Im not that interested atm. Im playing other games now, otherwise I might have given it a try.

I hate to see a MMO go with such a long featurelist. There was so much to do in the end.

Even after all those screw ups SWG is still better than SWTOR.

  • jakinjakin Member UncommonPosts: 243

If only it were an even trade.

SWG was my first MMO, an experience unparalleled since.  If only the concepts lived on and were iterated on the same way the standard MMO formula was improved over time.  I think it would have resulted in something quite special.

So long SWG.  You live now ... only in our memories. (just like Mel Gibson and when he was in good movies)

The thing isthat SWG was a sandbox with probably one of the best MMO communities around. It can't be replaced.

I feel like am belonging to a race dying out.. the ones that knew what a truly good Sandobx game is. If you have not played one of them, you just got no idea what you are missing. SWG after NGE, while a shadow of it former self, was still miles ahead of theese theeme park games.

SWTOR is of no interest to me and many people that enjoyed the type of game SWG was. Right now there are no games on the marked that can fill the gap for us that enjoyed SWG.

And SWG had been out for 7 years. The hardest part of loosing the game is to loose real friends that you said hello to almost every day.

The problem for the original SWG was that it was ahead of its time. If Lucasarts and SOE had real guts, they would have re-released the original SWG today and lots of the people burned out on the theeme park rail would have found interest in a game with depth and mechanics that would just wow them..

So yeah.. all the best die young. SWG was unique. It was my game, my story.. thats how we that played it feel and that is one of the things that seperates it from todays crap games.. sorry for using that word, but thats what the games today are in my opinion: crap.

And my honest opinion is that it was wrong to sunset that game, leaving a faithfull crowd out in the cold that have supported the game for years and years. If they really had been flexible and had a genuine interest of keeping it up, they would have found a way... anyways.. happy x-mas to all!

Wasnt my first but in the new era of mmos it was, well I played a few minutes of everquest 1 only to not be able to run sound on the game, was so silly.

Agree with poster above, SWG even with all it's flaws is still better IMO than Tor, I had my fill in beta and it just wasn't my style.  I'm sure it will draw a huge following but it's sad that SWG is now gone forever all because LA didn't want the games to compete with each other.

    Pretty much this.

TOR is nothing like SWG. SWG, even in its worst days, was a damn enjoyable thing and a sandbox, TORcraft is...welll  world of torcraft is world of torcraft.

TOR is nothing like KOTOR, to the point it should not even bear the same universe lore nor the sign of old good bioware.

its sad SWG could not go on. LA did a really cheap move hoping to capture "star wars" players into torcraft with this. All they did is cement my resolve to not touch TOR. And I am sure I am not the only one who will be avoiding the WoW2 as a plague.

One of the best, period.  And a lession to the industry on what not to do.

What can you say,  the housing, crafting , pets,  the gatherings at the starports,

     no other has come close.

    RIP ......

    RIP SWG.

Does knowing that TOR will probably run its contract out in 10 years make any TOR players uneasy?

Oh, right, TOR has close to zero long term playability, most players will stop playing within a few months and move on to the next WoW clone.  I forgot.  I guess no worries about the same thing happening to your game then!

Meh. Don't like SWTOR, so I can't revel in its arrival.

Didn't like SWG as the game was a total cock-up from day one, but did have empathy for the poor games long mistreatment in the hands of a company who I think we can safely say were "Just a bunch of muppets."

So while I lament because there is still no Star Wars MMO for me, I can at least feel some relief that the slow demented torture of poor SWG is finally at an end.

Goodnight sweet SWG and flights of angels sing thee to thy rest.

I agree if it was better than swtor it would have been a smash hit, it was buggy, laggy, bad combat, the best thing about it was you could get a fast racer right away, but the rest was old and just wrong thats all just wrong

Not a fan of either of them personally.

I figured I would toss this in, seems to be the opposite of what some people are saying, but...here's the other perspective: I don't care that SWG is gone, I have TOR. Good ridance as they were saying earlier. SWG really was not that great...at all. If it were, they would have kept it up. I'm glad I have a Star Wars MMO I can actually play without it just feeling like tedious, boring work as SWG did.

    Argh

The latest twist, but it's kinda funny. A bit.

I'm a fan of SWG but honestly I must say, anyone who says SWTOR is a "WoW clone" clearly has not played it. I agree that there are some similar aspects but "clone" is a gross exaggeration. I couldn't play WoW for more than an hour at a time because it can get absurdly dull; where with TOR, I found hours and days disappearing during the beta. In my opinion TOR fixed everything I hated about WoW.

If you're one of those folks who thinks now that SWG is gone you'll never be able to game again, give this a try. It's better than you think.

If you've already tried it, theres always "that Pre-CU project" that's been live for a while.

everytime i see a cantina in swtor i think of swg and how much more enjoyable that game was..and how people have changed over the years.

I was a huge fan of SWG...and then they did the NGE and ruined months of work on becoming a Jedi.  After NGE, I gave up.

  • jonnyfragjonnyfrag Member Posts: 110

Indeed, RIP SWG. It really had gotten a lot better and was going upward quality wise even though SOE gave it no money or manpower. Sad day indeed.

SWTOR really totally is nothing more than a WoW clone with a bunch of voice acting and as far as Bioware not screwing the pooch, smooth launch etc... go ask any player now about que times, random disconnects (putting you back of the line for said long ass ques) and general distribution issues with preorders and certain retailers

Not nearly as smooth as this article would lead you to believe, but it's all gone to shite since Friday midday so maybe this was 'printed' before the problems started. Let's see if they do end up reporting on yet another flakey and rage inducing launch fail.

Played: Asheron's Call(still the best fantasy MMO!), EQ1, EQ2, Vanguard, DAoC, Horizons, City of Heroes/Villians, WoW (crap), LOTORO, D&D Online, Eve, Anarchy Online, and still playing SWG daily.

It had to go, if you a business like Bioware or Lucas art and launching a game based on an IP like this, and your game tanked while the old one retained more followers than your failure... no you demand that the old game goes offline first.
