Help me Bioware, you're my only hope.
Is ToR going to be good? Dude it's Bioware making a freaking star wars game, all signs point to awesome. -G4tv MMo report.
My review as a beta member as posted on the internal beta forums:
First, I hope every single person who decides to play this game has an amazing time and enjoys every moment of gaming pleasure they get out of it.
Second, to my fellow testers; it's been a blast. A genuine pleasure testing with all of you and I hope to see many of you in some future beta somewhere, this was a solid beta group and I don't regret a minute of the time invested. I enjoyed some of the spirited discussions as much as most of my ingame time with you all.
My thoughts:
Overall: For what this game is, I think it's solid. It will draw a lot of people, and it will play well while meeting many of their expectations. It's not a cross between KOTOR and SWG, which I know from the public forums was the expectation of many, but then I don't believe it ever could have been.
Gameplay: It plays like what my wife and I thought it would be, a bit more single payer plus co-op than MMORPG in the classic sense. That's reasonable given the emphasis on personal story line above all. It's what has been advertised, and expected. For what it is, it's a good piece of work. Combat's ok...nothing revolutionary, nor was a claim to that ever made. Didn't disappoint and it didn't blow me away.
Story: A keeper, BW hit what they aimed at here.
PvP: For a game that does not have PvP as its focus, I think people will have fun with it. I hoped for more in the way of solid DAoC-style RvR to be sprinkled in considering the Mythic vets who were brought onto this team...but for what it is, it will be fun for people who just want to dip their toes in the pool. Hardcore PvPers will find it lacking, I think.
Leveling: Well paced, not as hard as a lot of feedback suggested it should be while not faceroll-easy once you get off the starter worlds. Past 30, in the last build, I had to start thinking a bit...that's a good thing. There will always be the race to 50 crowd, Bioware..please ignore them as much as you can and craft the game for most of your player base.
Crafting: Lacking for me, but after old SWG I may never see an MMO that really meets my desires for immersive crafting in a game again. The "companion as crafter" mechanic will make a lot of casuals new to crafting happy, I think...and it's not so stupid-simple that veteran crafters won't get some fun out of it.
GTN/AH: Needs attention, and in my opinion more than a little. Buying from the market should be an enjoyable and intuitive experience, and not a lot of work to navigate a clumsy interface and poor search options. There are good examples out there to emulate, and I expect this one will evolve.
UI: Poor. There are exellent UIs in the genre (without having to go the add-on route) that will invite comparison, and in its present incranation this one will fare poorly. Rift. A shining example of how to give your players control over the UI while still having a default UI that is playable. This one needs work.
Character Customization: Touchy subject, but it fell well short of the mark for me. I wanted more, I wanted a lot of control over my character, from height and build to facial bone structure, hair, eyes, you name it...I just wanted more ability to control what my avatars look like.
Space combat: It is what it is, and for a side game of space-on-rails I had fun with it. I knew it wasn't a critical focus and was not intended to be more than a side game. I'm ok with that.
I'm not on the "I wanted to love this game but in the end I hated it!" train at all. For me, personally, I think it is limited enough in scope and replayability while lacking in areas like the UI and customization to get me to:
"Yes it's good for what it is; but somehow I expected more....well...more."
Again, I hope people truly get engaged with the game, play it, have a blast, revel in the new incarnation of the Star Wars franchise. It was a toss-up for me, and the coin simply came down tails instead of heads.
