connell1mcbconnell1mcb Member Posts: 5

Hey guys just wondering if my laptop will be able to run Star Wars The Old Republic and how smoothly. Here are my specs:

Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) II P340 Dual-Core Processor (2 CPUs), ~2.2GHz

             Memory: 4096MB RAM

Graphics Card name: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470

Thanks.

It's a really new game (a few people are in the early start and that's it), but from what I saw in beta, yeah, you should have no trouble running it, but you will be running it at pretty low settings.

    Will SWTOR run?  Yes.

Will it run smoothly at low settings?  Doubtful.

That's about two year old hardware that was fairly low end when it was new.  That's fine for a lot of purposes, but gaming isn't one of them.

I hope you got that laptop dirt cheap used, because performance won't be remotely competitive with a typical $500 Llano laptop running integrated graphics.

It wouldnt be worth playing SWTOR on that graphics card, youd be setting your self up for disapointment.  Here is some info about your card, http://www.notebookcheck.net/ATI-Mobility-Radeon-HD-5470.23698.0.html.  Iv got a ati 5650 card in my laptop you can see how it runs SWTOR on my channel at http://www.youtube.com/notebookplayer, its first video.  I can run it mostly max settings with my card but its pushing its limits, for PVP I have to overclock, use gameboster to free up memory, and a few other things.  It says your card scores between 3k-4500 fps in 36mark06, thats not going to cut the musterd for PVP, even in alot of the terrain areas it takes just as much graphics power as it does pvp'ing.

You could get by with overclocking(Amd Gpu Tools(its what i use works great, u can find it on net for free)), using gamebooster 3.0(its software), fraps to watch your fps and Hwmonitor to watch your temps so u dont fry your new lappy, if you do all that like I Do mostly when I game you could probably get through most of the story and have a decent time but your not going to be winning any pvp battles or being the best pve player in the group.

If u need help setting your self up for better gaming, i can help.  My 3dmark06 score goes from 7400 to around 8100 when I overclock for comparison.

ok thanks, I was able to play world of warcraft pvp on medium settings fine, but I suppose that's an older game. Is there anyway I would be able to upgrade my laptop to make it run smoothly on low settings, its a hp pavillion dv6.

HP? ouch.  Sorry man, if you can save up some loot build yourself a desktop.  It might be worth working a 2nd job or whatever for a few weeks to do it.

Swotor doesn''t take much, and you're chances of running it on your lap top are pretty slim.

Have you had the pleasure of dealing with hp tech support yet?  It's a nightmare.  They outsource everything to India, which makes them a scummy company imo.

Most laptops you buy arnt going to have the ability to game on them let alone game on the newest games a few years down the road.  The best bet if your going to be a Notebook gamer like me is to be a conscientious buyer and know before hand what your going to want to do with it.  My gaming laptop works great with all the latest games, my Lenovo Ideapad Y460, but its not really just a gaming laptop its more of a multimedia center.

You can get a great gaming laptop that will play games years down the road for around 400 dollars any more if you look in the right places, I found this thread yesterday http://slickdeals.net/forums/showpost.php?p=45764986&postcount=347 which has a few ok deals.  The price point for a great gaming laptop/multimedia center is around 600-700 currently, at least for the mainstream ones like the Ideapads/timelineX Acers/even the m11x/14x can be had for around 800 if you find some coupons as well as sony vaio ca/s series/msi dx460/ and lots of others.

You can also find full fledged gaming systems for under 800 if thats your thing with mxm graphics cards in them.  I cant tell you how it will game though since I dont got your specifications, if you got the card the poster has then you can do the things I told him he can do and it will be playable.

As far as updating your current laptop, yes you can with SSD's,better or more memory, processors but as far as graphics are concerned unless you got mxm graphics cards(dedicated cards that are fited onto the mobo by pci-e x16 slots) then no you cant, since most graphics are soldered onto the mobo.  Theres technoligy in the works so you will be able to replace graphics cards but not as of currently the way you think of it.   MMORPG's use up alot of processor power so having a decent processor is critical in that sence but upgrading one just for an mmorpg when you dont have a great graphics chip I would not recommend since the performance gain you will see in the game will be minimal and not outweigh the cost of doing it.

Upgrading the processor or graphics in a laptop usually isn't an option.  So much stuff has to be done custom to fit the laptop form factor that you don't have much of an upgrade path like you do with desktops.  Rather the "upgrade" path is to replace the machine.

If gaming is the intended purpose, get a desktop if you can.  A desktop can get you better gaming performance for cheaper than a laptop, and then you can upgrade the desktop later rather than having to replace everything.

Yeah don't know if it will run all that well. Before I got my PC, I would "TRY" to play games on my mac. Steam games "worked" and when i "played" team fortress there was so much lag and it basically wouldn't start.
