I mean srsly. U dont need better graphs than "The sims 1", "rollercoaster 1" or "Red alert 1". You need to develope the games concept not nessecerly the games Graphs which already was enough at those times...
G
Could any big gamecompany build on the Diablo 2 concept and just make it much better instead of making graphs 90% of your time? Jesus fuking chirst. I WANT TO FARM NAOW!!... but nothing attracts me. Brb gonna play some Worms 1.
And this new Swtor or what the name is... i watched some gameplays and it looks like a god damn movie. IT LOOKS so limited. I could see it in 2 minutes it was a limited game whith poor randomize. MMORPG == RANDOMIZE FFS and NOT balance.
Just to complete my statement: New games = New action movies with "epic" wars ALL the time and "epic" music all the time. There is no good contrast etc. Its only bad. If i would make a game for example i would make the enviorment pretty poor graphs so i can increase effects at some parts that i want to "shine", for example gear and dragon-mobs etc. In nowadays games u dont see any epic with anything because EVERTYHING lookks too good and everyone got the same gear beacuase no randomize. THERE IS NO CONTRAST:

Simple Answer: Yes they can, no they won't.
You can make a great game all day long. But the reality is you need to draw people IN. The deal is if you create an MMO with sub-par graphics, you are going to have too many people who simply pass it by. Your only hope would be word of mouth about how fun the game is. But its going to be a very hard sale.
People are willing to tolerate poor graphics for "cheap time killers" (I.E. facebook games). But if they want something "Serious" they want it to have the graphics to back it up.
So long, and thanks for all the fish!
Minecraft?????????......
It doesn't have to push the bar in graphics, but it does need to have somewhat recent graphics. Minecraft is an exception... not the rule.
It also heavily depends on the type of game it is as well. If it's the next big shallow game release it has to have really good graphics. The people that are desperate for specific game mechanics will sacrifice some graphic quality for what they're looking for.
I don't think choosing sucky graphics like in Red Alert 1 will make development significantly easier.
They do make online games that have no graphics.
They are called Browser games. They can actually be fun and well done. Just not overly graphics intense. You will need to shop around and expect duds, scams and just ones that don't deal in themes you might find entertaining but it's going to be cheaper for you than someone downloading 10 gigs of disappointment.
openTTD <- beats games like APB:R or BF3...
i have more fun playing a fan updated game from 1994 then APB or some 2010+ game which is pretty sad
There are plenty on great game with not so great graphics. The problem is finding great games with great graphics.
I don't get it what graphics has to do with game mechanics... It's like comparing roses to condoms... Graphic depends mostly on the graphic engine which is used and how well they can make the textures when the core of the game (it's mechanics) has to be developed as in any game. The relationship between those 2 isn't strictly determined or somehting.

Fundamentally and mechanically, Wurm Online is probably the greatest game I've ever played.
Graphically....... I think it may be the worst.
My perfect game would be Wurm Online with a better graphics engine.
people want to play games like age of empires with crys-eng... sadly alot of games try to use the crys-eng and have really great graphics but fail at game play... or they make really great games and give it 1D cell graphics.
alot of people think if a game has graphics like crysis its the next best thing since sliced bread...
But to a certain degree that are related, because the more money you spend on graphics, the less money you spend on creating and honing gameplay.
Eve and WoW are both pretty good examples of graphically limited games that have game mechanics which people seem to like.
When EVE was released, it had the best graphics on the market of any MMO... and actually has continued that way for quite some time. They were the first DX11 and DX10 game when they converted and they are continuing to update the graphics.
I remember when EVE was in beta in 2003. It required a 128mb Video card, which would be the equivelant to a ATI HD 6970 now.
Performance certainly trumps graphics, because bad framerate or long load times actually impact how a game plays.
Still, I'm not sure games like Skyrim would have held me quite as long without the amazingly elaborate game world graphics it has.
Also, graphics are inextricably part of fun. Unless the graphics cause performance issues, nicer graphics will always make a game better. (Although I guess since it might not be obvious I should mention: "nicer" definitely doesn't always mean "more photorealistic".)

Half Life 2's Source engine is pretty good looking even at this time. So yes you can make an MMORPG with a engine that is more than 5 years old. Vindictus immediately comes into mind.

Hey hey hey heeeeeeeeeeeyyyyy.......
MineCraft.
SWTOR is one such game, is it not ?
Very story heavy, graphics are pretty meh.
Some of the best games have very shitty graphics, look at dwarf fortress and heaven & hearth for example. Prime examples that graphics quality is the reversal of depth of game play.
But don't expect big companies to make this kind of game, they don't want to make in dept games, they want to make game that sell a lot, this mean graphics over deep gameplay.
But a balanced game would be nice for sure. Game like Skyrim for example which have both a rich gameplay, and nice graphics, or Uo is an other good example, a bit old, but still is a good example of nice graphic and deep game play.
you are kiding yourself dude.

Philosophy of MMO Game Design
WOW had good quality graphics when it first was released. Since it's cartoonish it can't have shiny metals and what not.
SWTOR doesn't really have bad graphics... It has good graphics but it's not really maxed out (it still misses AA and HD textures which they promised to implement somewhere around the release). Tho, having the maximum possible graphics means you'd have to cut out of the game people who don't have a high end gaming PC and for MMO it's a big loss.

Sadly the way people are today they must have pretty graphics in order to enjoy an MMO.... Graphics mean nothing to me as long as there is features that last longer then a few months.
+1 MineCraft
Porn has voice acting, who doesn't skip it?
All I've wanted for years now is a good company to make a good 2D MMORPG. Basically remake Tibia but with a lot new features and on a better engine, like show gears and add thousands of customization options, professions and items etc, maybe combat like League of Legends. But nope every company is going for real-life-simulators when it comes to graphics and doesn't care about RPG elements.
What he mean is dont spent money on stunningly beautifull game but just be content with what was already onmarket 10 years ago but spent all the money in the gameplay.
So make game with crappy graphics but superb gameplay.
