What does GW2 do that's unique to the genre?

MMOExposedMMOExposed Member RarePosts: 7,400
I see that GW2 is the most hyped MMO game here. But I am curious, what is this game doing that is so unique enough to draw this kind of hype levels. I will admit I don't follow the game, which has me curious about this. Looking at the past feature list, nothing seems new, as in never been done before. But maybe new stuff has been added since I last checked the feature list. I don't know. So what's so different about GW2 that draws so much hype?

tjeck this thread. You will also find some discussion about if something really is innovative or not.

But its actual hard to grasp what ArenaNet actual do, without looking at their gamephilosofi. For a starter, they go further down the road than any, not to separate their playerbase.

Yeah most of that list isn't original to GW2. is there some updates?

It really depends on your definition of "new." New as in "never before seen in any video game ever" or new as in "hasn't been done in an MMO before?"

Dynamic Events are probably the only example of the former. They share similarities to mechanics found in other games (WAR's public quests, Rifts rifts), but the specifics are something I've never seen in a video game of any genre before. Still more of a unique evolutionary advancement than a 100% completely novel feature, however.

A lot of the features are not truly "new" in the "completely novel" sense of the word. The way these features are combined and implemented, however, makes them rather unique to the MMO world.

The removal of both the classic "tank, healer, DPS" trinity and class-specific roles is one example. All classes can perform the 3 new roles (damage, support, control), and they can perform them within the same battle even (no need to visit a trainer and "respec" to a different role or the like).

The removal of targeted heals/buffs and a greater focus on self-healing and damage prevention via both skills and dodging is another example.

There is more, but the most important thing is how all these features come together to make a unique experience.

But it's mostly new to AAA MMOs. Isn't that the point?

Who cares if a feature's been done in an FPS or partially in a low-budget niche MMO? Everything been's done before in the grand scheme of things but at least GW2 is going away from the norm of most standand MMOs today.

Going that way... No new updates that can point at your assumption that it is something never seen before , that lead to its high hype. But thats a wrong assumption anyway.

The real question is not if its seen and done before, but if it has been done with such consequence in any MMO before! Have there anytime been an MMO where every feature, and it is every feature, is about playing together.

It's an MMO therefor it is not new or unique

Yeah, the recent reddit discussion they held with the fans and answered hundreds of question, really shows how passionate ArenaNet is and how they want to foster good communication between the devs and fans.
