What rock were you living under in 2004? WoW was probably the worst mmo launch ever conceived--absolutely no content, numerous bugs, and server crashes up the patooty. No but SWTOR has been the smoothest ride I've ever been on, sometimes I forget I'm playing an MMO--well except for the times I get disconnected and have to wait in a 50 minute queue; but other than that it's been fantastic.
I don't know man. Anarachy Online was so bad. Ultima Online was really bad. Shadowbane had massive server crashes. There were a ton more releases that were alot worse then WoW.
Those titles weren't dealing with even close to the same amount of numbers either.
Wow had a terrible release! what are you talking about. The game barely worked on day 1, assuming you could even log in...
This assessment bothers me everytime I read it. While I'm not aware of WOW having server issues on day one I am not saying it wasn't possible but from my experience WOW only got server issues when the population exploded and it never effected all servers. I remember the asshats of Blackrock constantly invading our servers in an attempt to crash it so as to force Blizzard to fix the server they liked and while it worked some times it didn't always.
Other than that the only other bug I personally experienced was the loot bug where your toons would not stand after looting a corpse and then you could still play the game the same you would just be reset to the looting position after each fight and while walking, even this was an easy fix with a relog.
The only other launmch issue I recall experiencing or seeing others complain about were the que's that began to pop up again as a result of the game becoming an overnight sensation.
Now I wouldn't say everyone had as good an experience at launch of WOW as me but I don't think players should supplant either their own experiences or some they heard about as indicitive of the games launch as a whole.
Given the fact that the game wildly exceeded expectations and most of it's problems were fixed by adding tons more servers I would rate the launch as above average as no one could have expected that game would serve the number of players it did. Heck WOW has more players than like the next ten mmorpg's combined.
Yep that pretty much sums up how I felt about it as well.
I've yet to have my gameplay interrupted by bugged quests, crashes, graphical errors, or anything else.
Smooth sailing here; I'm starting to appreciate all the countless patches and updates through the beta and maitenance.
Very well done, Bioware.
good for you I have had numerous graphical errors so far.. glad they seems to of fixed the stuck in ground I was getting a lot in beta. Numerous occasions hologram characters are just not there, I hear there voice but nothing is displayed. Theres also a ton of clipping issues especially with NPCs and robots near them that seem to like ot stop right inside the person during dialog. No crashes so far though and framerates have stayed up and no real lag so happy about that.
I think its safe to say that in the light of WoW's success, all new successful MMO's have had better launches than WoW, like everyone says it had a terrible launch, the market was very different then and so were the standards.
If any MMO today had a launch like WoW's it would be deemed an epic fail and black listed by the gaming community, thats why its vital for these companies to have smooth launches because thats whats expected now, polish and quality from the get go.
Lets not forget Rift's launch, can't that be said to be one of the best MMO releases since WoW?
My main source of frustration so far is the ridiculous amount of gathering nodes that are placed in spots that render them un-gatherable. Soooo frustrating to run up to a scavenge pile and it be placed too close to a wall or halfway in the ground so you can't interact with it. It's particularly bad in Taris.

I mean considering the standards were low in 2004 I guess the comparisson is really unfair in any light.

I definately don't feel that way. After playing the beta for 6 months - their launch WAS a letdown. While it was handled marginally better than L2 - it was not in the same league as DAOC's. In fact -0 no game up until Rift launched as well (IMO anyways).
However - this is definately shaping up to be the best release since Rift, for sure !
I read the forums and I've played MMO's since they were just text based muds. (I'm kind of old in gaming years). Anyway, WoW took me by surprise. I didn't think I would like it, but I really did. The release was pretty smooth and the game throughout the years was fun. They added content for PVP and PVE.
The TOR release was pretty smooth as well. I liked the staged release. I think long term this will be as successful as WoW.
Everyone keeps saying, well they don't have Rated Battlegrounds, or teams for Hutball. They don't have full space combat, they don't have this or that etc...
I want all those things as well, but when you look at what this game actually released with it is alot. The single player experience (Story line) is very well done. The flashpoints are a blast. PVP is good, they have good equipment and neat crafting system. They tackled the aspect of allowing people to do content either solo or duo with companions.
It took years for WoW, EQ, EQ2 etc.. to put in some of their best content and I expect the same from TOR.
I'm having fun and maybe I will get bored in a few months, but then that next feature will be added and it will keep me coming back for more.
BTW, I loved UO the best out of all the games I ever played. But, UO was the perfect game for a 23 year old smoking herb and working as an IT guy. I wasn't married, didn't have kids or a ton of responsibility. I smoked herb and played UO with my girlfriend and now my wife. It would be real hard to compete in a game like that now. I just don't have the same time to devote to that stuff, and I don't smoke herb anymore, so it would be much harder to mindlessly sit there and macro mining to raise str, or trap a nightmare to train swords etc...
When I retire, I hope there is a good sandbox game to play, but until then I'll take well done themeparks.
I think it was brilliant the way Bioware handled release so far. The staggared launch meant people were not fighting over MOB's and tripping over each other trying to find trigger points to execute quest objectives. Having watched my share of EGA, this games launch was smooth and very well done. Get's an A from me. The only thing I saw or heard that was bad were players in guilds not allowed to join at the same time. So you had guild members that managed to get to level 20, before other members could get in. No biggy, but I think it might have made a few people upset. Still Biowares release of SW:ToR should be an example of how to launch an MMO in the future.

One can debate that, specially if you take in consideration WoW release wasn't THAT great. Far more games came out before TOR that I would feel did better then TOR to me for release. To each his own though.

Very well said. TOR imo, has had an insanely smooth launch for having the most startup players of any mmo in the history of mmos. My latency is usually around 50-60ms, and graphically the game is also smooth.
This game has all of my favorite features from games like WoW and Rift (minus maybe a couple), and then it has a few of it's own innovative features. It's easy to think about all the features this game could have. Like SWG space combat and what not. But you have to remember, this game just launched. It could easily have full space travel/ combat and a ton of other features within one or two expansion packs. I'm having a blast with this game so far. Both with PvE and PvP (combat is super smooth like WoW, very mobile).
I have maintained good frame rates, minimal lag, never got disconnected or booted, never crashed or had a bug that made me reboot, and Iv'e never had to camp a spawn for longer than 30 seconds.
We will see what happens tomorrow. But so far, this has been the smoothest MMO launch Iv'e ever experienced.
I sit on a man's back, choking him and making him carry me, and yet assure myself and others that I am very sorry for him and wish to ease his lot by all possible means - except by getting off his back.
All my guess haterade would go away if some simple stuff was not missing like a single server LFG or macros. The TOR community is just way too spastic and I get this feeling instead of competing they are holding TOR back.
ioware has a chance here because they got that Tri fecta WoW had...good IP...not too much competition(yes I love Rift but money talks) and dev with a great reputabible background. There are certain things I can not write off like grace period for queue times?? or hot fixing the pvp exploits??
ok the game is released where are the notes from the dev tracker? This game has every mmorpg site on the tip of its finger waiting for news..what is next? what content will be next? It is fun to watch honestly if you are taking a break from this silly 1st month hype crap.
Originally posted by Zylaxx WoW had a terrible release, constant queues, loot bugs for 2 weeks. Chat bug for a month, glitches and animation fiasco's for 4 days. WoW was my no stretch by the imagination a good launch. Rift however was a marvelous launch and doesnt get credit where its due, maybe because the end game is shit.
Most of what you have described was a result of lag based on soaring server populations which included the "loot bug". Furthermore there are similar chat bugs (the other day I lost the ability to type in party with SW:TOR until I re-logged), animation bugs (try skipping through cut-scenes) and other similar bugs you've mentioned that can be scene in SW:TOR. In the end I think you really are over exaggerating the actual nature of WoW's limited problems at launch of which the greatest were a result of lag due to servers being at complete max capacity.
Games I've played/tried out:WAR, LOTRO, Tabula Rasa, AoC, EQ1, EQ2, WoW, Vangaurd, FFXI, D&DO, Lineage 2, Saga Of Ryzom, EvE Online, DAoC, Guild Wars,Star Wars Galaxies, Hell Gate London, Auto Assault, Grando Espada ( AKA SoTNW ), Archlord, CoV/H, Star Trek Online, APB, Champions Online, FFXIV, Rift Online, GW2.
SWTOR has been my best MMORPG experiences I have had in my 12+ years of online gaming. It just blows me away and it's so freaking addicting that my family is starting to worry hahah. I game for me is one that has alot of things to do. It can't just be one dimensional in nature. Meaning, it has to have alot of other things to do and this game has alot of stuff to do besides instanced PvP, instanced PvE. It has world PvP which adds an element and danger of ganking for those that like doing that. They have PvE worlds where those types of things are avoided. The crafting system is amazing and the best I have ever encountered in any MMO (my opinion). Space combat and travel is new and exciting and the devs said they will add to it in future patches/expansions. The companion system with each one having thier own personalities is new to me and amazing. I mean I can go on and on.
I read this wondering what game r you playing? And what games have you played in the past? Because ToR is the one dimensionl game your bashing lol. ToR sucks im just not scared to say it.
I still can not buy a standard edition. Sold out it says. A digital downloadable game that is sold out ! But that is the pre-release I suppose ? So, ... where is it then ?
The prepaid card I can order, but they are still cranky on PayPal. The button is still there, but "for the moment" unavailable.
But hey ! "the cool stuff will come just a little after" -> watch the end of the new documentary trailer
