Guild Wars 2: Mesmer - Master of the Mind

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

Last week, Arena.Net announced that the Mesmer was the final profession that will ship with the game on release. Today we take a look at the Mesmer and what this master of mind-control brings to the game. Read on!

Finally, the last profession for Guild Wars 2 has been revealed! In a way I was hoping for something new, rather than just an old profession coming back, but I must say, ArenaNet sure has out done itself yet again with the Mesmer. Some of the professions are those that are returning from the first game, such as the Warrior, Ranger, Elementalist and Necromancer. What was nice is that all these professions got a much needed facelift, even though they did very well for the old age of RPG games. Guild Wars 2 is focusing on a new way for MMOs to be made and played. But today, we are talking about the Mesmer, so let me tell (and show) what I like about the returning veteran.

Mesmer sounds very interesting but......why make an enemy think they are on fire when, in a video game, you can actually set them on fire? A difference that makes no difference is not a difference.

    Hehe. Good question :D

Its same logic as Illusion spells in D&D.

Enemy thinking he is on fire suffers same damage as if he was on fire. But actual illusion of fire is easier to cast (its lower level spell)

At least so D&D solves it.

It doesn't make a difference damage-wise, but it does lore-wise. Every profession has a different approach to combat, and while some can actually set their enemies on fire, others can't but are talented elsewhere, such as with illusions, and rely on those.

Never argue with an idiot. He will drag you down to his level and beat you with experience.

My problem was in 1 of the videos there's a like teleport-gate back and forth... What does teleporting have to do with mind-control/effecting? And then there was something that looked like a big lightning-like blast. I can understand illusions, fear, sleep, stun, invisibility, mind-attacks, those kinds of things make sense. But you know... whatever....

A mesmer isn't just about mind control/effecting. A mesmer was a class thats based off an illusionary trickster. They  technically control the forces of chaos wihch could explain the lightning like blast you mentioned.  The class was made to control the pace of the battle at hand.  As for the teleportation just think of it as extreme surrealism.

the teleporting is a way of messing with the mind of the enemies....thinking you are one place then BAM...you are in another.

    That is true.

They seem to have combined a few different 'buids' from the original GW mesmer for this sequel. The mesmer previous was quite a versatile class. It was about pacing, and employed multiple different methods of doing so.

Damage - The mesmer could either conjure illusionary weapons and start laying on melee pain.

                  - The mesmer could turn an enemy's spells / skills back onto the user and inflict harm that way.

                  - The mesmer could inflict devestating nightmares / visions, and grant illusions of weakness to wear out the enemy.

Control   - Massive interrupts / shutting down an enemy's skills, or stealing them completely.

                  - Mass slows, reduced accuracy, etc. to cripple an offense, or shatters to cripple defensive enchantments.

The mesmer has been one of the most versatile classes in GW1, and I hope they carry that on to GW2. From the skills we have seen, there does appear to be a wide range of functions the mesmer can perform, which is very reassuring.

Also, people shouldn't just focus on the mental aspect of the mesmer. While that is their strongest skill, they are still mages, and have other talents besides illusions. As listed above, they are also quite gifted at dispelling, reversing, and countering enemy spells.

Guys, that enemy actually WAS in fire. That's why he burned to death. The fire wasn't even part of the illusion mechanic. Clones and phantasms are referred to as illusions. They were mentioned in the article, but then he kind of drifted off into that fire thing.
