I'm new to MMORPG.com, but it seemed like the place to come for my question. I've been through a couple of MMO's now (FFXI, AO, WoW, and Guild Wars) and I'm trying to figure out what to play. In all of these games, I've played either a tank or a ranged attacker (i.e. Hunter, Ranger, that sort of thing) and have every intention of staying in that sort of class. Also, I like games with a lot of players and a large social aspect. That being said, I'm trying to figure out what to play. I'm strongly debating going back to WoW (I would start from scratch, though, since when I quit I sold all my trinkets. D'oh!) As far as pacing, I like WoW the best. FFXI was too much like work, having to do everything in parties. Guild Wars was too solitary and too fast. I didn't care for the whole world being instanced. I felt that WoW had the right mix of being able to solo a lot of the game if you wanted to, but always having people around. Anyway, any suggestions on good games that are out right now and you think would be what I'm looking for would be greatly appreciated. Otherwise I guess I'll fire WoW back up and wait for D&D Online and LOTRO.

Perhaps it would be easier to figure out what to recommend if you could explain what you *didn't* like about WoW. Why did you quit?

Hey no need to excuse yourself for quitting WoW. Everyone who is above 12 years old quits it after average of 2 months playing. WoW is not really MMORPG it is MMOG
Unfortyunately i can not recomend nothing, since all current MMORPGs lack a lot. And they all have horrible comunities. SWG might be the best thing, i heared they are trying to bring a lot of innovations...but i personally didnt play it.

Hmm, You may want to try World of Warcraft again, but then again, when was the last time you played? Because well, they have added some decent things like Battlegrounds, PvP ranking system, and the 1.6 patch was a decent patch, too.
However, you may also enjoy Everquest II. The leveling is is fairly fast (not faster then WoW's, though). And, you can solo really easily in Everquest II. System Requirements may be a problem, though .
City of Heroes you MAY enjoy. It would probably be worth it to give it a try. I don't have that much experience with this MMORPG, though. But, I heard that you can solo it, and leveling is fairly fast. I also heard it gets a bit repetitive later on.
That's actually one thing that's held me back a bit about WoW. I'm kind of scared about how things have changed, and that I won't really recognize the game anymore. Also, I was an early generation, and I don't really like the idea of starting over with 60's all over the place. Don't get me wrong, I wasn't the first 60 on my server (heck, I only got to 56) but I was at least first generation in my guild. It was fun to be going into instances without all my guildies telling me what to expect. I mean, the first time reaching the end of Uldaman, with that giant stone thing, and getting totally rocked. That was seriously possibly the most fun night I had. Suddenly it was a challenge, that required serious strategizing.
That being said, I think I might be heading back to Skullcrusher sometime this weekend, see if any of the old guildies are still alive. First, however, if someone could tell me how much things have changed (for better or worse) since mid-April, I would really appreciate the info. Also, anyone on Skullcrusher, let me know and I'll send you a wazzup when I log back on.
As far as EQ2, I almost played it instead of WoW way back when (almost a year, I think. I was planning the next game I was playing and got talked out of EQ2 and into WoW by a friend). However, I never heard too much good about it. I had heard it didn't really catch on, though I don't know how much of that was WoW fanboy chatter. Anyone who did play EQ2, is it worth trying to get into now?
Oh, and I am about to get back into Guild Wars. I talked to a friend tonight and he said he hooked up with our old WoW GuildMaster (or, rather, the one who was GM before turning it over tome when he quit) and they're in a guild together, but I do appreciate the invite. My character's name is Zaliban Zandrel. He's only about a lvl 10 Ranger/Warrior (if that high, like I said, it's been a while) but he might have a little more adventuring ahead of him.
Also, I'll check out the sites for those other two games you mentioned, see if they seem like something I'd like. I appreciate everyone's help. I must say, from everything I've seen as yet, mmorpg.com has been one of the most informative forums I've come across to date.
Horn... I would strongly reccommend a game with tons of players and only a small percentage of the world is instanced. It is the award-winning game of "Dark Age of Camelot".
Give it a try and right now I think that they have a free 10 day trial going or something.

Are people still playing DAOC? Again, the reason I stayed away is that I had basically heard the game had matured and passed on, like most MMO's end up doing. I always thought it looked like a lot of fun. If it's still alive and kicking, I might just have to give it a try. Especially at 10 days free
Most of the MMOs that have been mentioned are fantasy genre. If you're looking for something that's not fantasy, maybe you should look at EVE Online. Space-based MMO that's been out for a while, and seems to have a pretty good reputation (it's held steady in the rankings on the main page for a good, long while). It has a 14-day free trial period. Not sure about the community though, as I haven't played it. http://www.eve-online.com
If you're looking for a good community, you could try Horizons. It's got a free trial too. But the game isn't for everyone (it seems to be a game you either love or hate), and it's history is something some people just can't get over. The population is small but growing. http://www.istaria.com
Or you could always go back to WoW.
DAoC has well over 200,000 active subscribers. Mythic is a great company that continues to make the game better, bigger, and prettier every 6 months or so. Dark Age of Camelot is definately a good choice for you if you like fantasy mmos, lots of players, tons of uniqie classes to choose from and like a lot of fun. Highly recommended.
Eve Online is the choice if you prefer sci-fi mmos
Atleast this is my opinion of what you might love.
Also, I was wrong. The 10 day trial is for returning players. You, as a new player to DAoC would actually qualify for a 14 day free trial to try it out. Here is the link...
Dark Age of Camelot 14 DAY FREE TRIAL

14 day free trial is great & all but after u hav to pay. i dont think i could afford it.
what the best free mmorpg out there?
Probably Guild Wars bud. It is honestly probably the best mmo type of game you'll get with no monthly subscription costs. Unfortunately, there is no free trial for this one and you'll likely have to fork out about $45 or $50 for the initial game.

i'v tried guild wars
it has instancing
which means it gets very lonely.

Final Fantasy XI is a fantastic game.
