Do you need to play right now? Give it a couple of weeks to let the hype die down and we start seeing more balanced opinions from both camps.

Yes. Tons of fun. If you like Bioware games, you will like this.

If your on the fence about an MMO then it's best to wait a month after release to see if the subs plummet. That's what I chose to do about SWTOR.

I am a story guy, I will probably listen to every voiceover, just to feel more immersion.

No. I've played it and I when friends ask me I don't recommend it.

You might like it though... but do what the above poster said and wait for the hype to die down.

It will be quite a while before another game of this stature breaks ground.  If you have time and desire, why not get in early?  It won't take long until those already in are at level-cap and doing endgame.

I have played: Daoc, EQ, Lotro, AoC, WoW, RIft, War, Aion, STO, DCU, RFO, L2. etc. SWTOR is the best MMO that i have played in my life as a gamer. And with the aggressive post launch content strategy that Bioware have, the hype will be even bigger in the incoming months, New Warfronts, Operations, Flashpoints, more Endgame solo content, the Legacy System, more Opvp planets like Ilum, and FFA pvp zones, a revamped space combat, !Guild Capital Ships!, and is just the beginning.

No offence to OP but why do people feel the need to reinforce THEIR OWN DECISION nowadays?

    I don't get it.

Just want to know what I will like about it or hate about it, really. Without a free trial of any kind this is the only way.

Well, your not going to get a true honest opinion right now. Your going to get fanboy's loving it and saying it's the greatest MMO ever made cause they are still caught up in the new MMO smell. On the other hand, you have the people who are not as easily impressed and to express their opinion of how they are disappointed in SWTOR they will say how it's the worse MMO of all time. So, it's getting the opinions of two different extremists.

I like Vanguard. I kinda hate WoW. I like EQ. I hate Aion. I like some sense of exploration, I like a feeling of danger while running round in an mmo. Like trying to run through Lfay in old EQ days to get to castle mistmoore, always watching out for the black unicorn. I was able to play rift - it was ffun - until they implemented the dungeon queue and emptied the world zones. Thanks for the replies.

Because formulating your own opinion can be expensive, especially if you end up not liking it. The game is great--it has tons of content, the voice acting is a real plus--saddly the side stories get rather mundane later on, but the fact that voice acting is still there makes it slightly more fun than your average quest. The main story is awesome, hands down--great. Space Combat is one of my favorite things about the game, people rag on it--but I actually really like it; it's like Star Fox mixed with Star Wars. SWTOR though, at the end of the day, is still an MMO. It's fun, but at times it can feel like a grind and some of the zones feel rather bland; Coruscant, Taris, Nar Shaddaa--to name the ones I've hated the most. Tatooine and Alderan are both awesome though, so I dunno. I like it though, will probably play it.

The reason you want to play is it is simply fun as hell.  All of the classes are a blast and you do not get bogged down by leveling.  If you go into it with your eyes open and do not expect a full fledged community and alot of end game content, you will be more than happy with it.  If you go into it with the thought that it is the giant killer and that it should have everything WoW, EQ2, etc has now plus more, you will be disappointed.  Not to say that SWTOR wont have it in the future, you just have to remember that this is a new release.

So don't compare it to anything else and just enjoy it for what it is and you will not be disappointed in the least.

    Ok that helps.

It's not like Vanguard at all though the worlds get a bit larger as you go on.

There are different starting stories per class.

There seems to be a lot to do. Don't roll on a pvp server (I assume you don't like being ganked as per the Aion reference?).

There is some exploration but not really, at least from what I've seen, like Vangaurd. There are things to discover such as these datachrons that give stat boosts if you discover them. You can of course use the internet to find where they are but it's sort of fun trying to find some of these things.

I haven't felt much danger but have blundered into some tougher than normal mobs that were not soloable so I liked that. I actually enjoy the story parts so if that is something you might not mind then it could be a positive.

Not a huge amount of physical character customization and I've yet to really be excited by my skill tree choices but I will see as I progess.

I would be curious as to why you hate WoW. Some of the game play elements in SWToR fall along the standard mmo lines. Still, this game doesn't feel like a WoW clone but more like another branch of the tradtional mmo family.

Well in that case you might not like TOR.

    No!

All the "good" WoW crowd is in SWTOR right now so the 1st few months community wise the game is not worth it. If you will play solo all the way and shut off all chat channels then go ahead try it.

I just started Rift back and I get answers on chat everytime I need help and no one is trying to be a smart@$$ like it was when Rift released.

ok so different starting areas/stories. This is definitely a plus. To be honest, I don't know why I hate wow. I played it for a while, I think it was the lack of people in leveling zones, I completely loathe dungeon queue lines. Yeah, thats pretty much it....dungeon queue will end any game for me I tihnk.

    I say "NO"

not because I don't think you should play the game, but simply because if you don't have enough reasons to play the game already, then you'll just end up being an unsatisfied customer. If you really wanted to play the game, you'd be playing.

All of my posts are either intelligent, thought provoking, funny, satirical, sarcastic or intentionally disrespectful. Take your pick.

I get banned in the forums for games I love, so lets see if I do better in the forums for games I hate.

I enjoy the serenity of not caring what your opinion is.
