New review from Ten Ton Hammer: http://www.tentonhammer.com/reviews/star-wars-the-old-republic.
Overall, I think it's a fairly decent review...maybe a little generous on some points, but not overly pandering or overly critical. At the end, I thought the reviewre summed it up very well when he writes:
While the game largely adheres to the same, overused template when it comes to combat, progression systems, and itemization that many MMO gamers have grown weary of by this point, it represents the pinnacle of what can be achieved within that particular framework. If World of Warcraft marked the beginning of a new era for the MMO industry back in 2004, then The Old Republic will no doubt be long remembered as the title that helped bring that era to a close on an astoundingly high note.

So they say the game killed the genre and then they give it a high rating? My point stands in that other thread I amde..HUGE IP + Big world = blind fan base to defend mediocrity
I don't think they say it necessarily killed the genre. I just think they are aware that other developers are making games that push the genre in different directions, and SWTOR is probably the last "WoW-like" MMORPG we're going to see (I hope).

I find all of those reviews to be ridiculously generous.
Heheh, thanks for finding that. Ironic quote there; pretty much "the game that said 'this is all we can do here.'"
The most important part of that review is found in the words written under the 'Value' and 'Lasting Appeal' sections.
That's the red meat of an MMO, and will utlimately determine its long-term success.
Those are the two lowest scores and are very telling.
What a conflicting review. And by conflicting I mean the comments just don't match up to the score given. They complain about a lot of things in that review yet still give the section an 85 or higher. I don't get it. Are they just afraid to rate it correctly?
Read Lasting Appeal for instance. That section got the biggest slating, the comment, "That's not to say there aren't plenty of other activities for players to enjoy as an alternative to playing through the same quests, on the same planets, in the order 4 times per faction.", seems to be leaking through their real feelings, yet they seem unable to place a real score to the section. 80 for Lasting Appeal after those comments? Really?
TentonHammer has been famous for doing this honestly if you ever follow them. They have like a little Rift section I read and I see it alot. They are big on conflicting reviews.
Their review is imo very generous - especialy graphics without AA and high res textures and multiplayer without lfg tool ...
But they are at least consistent with their marks - Rift got 95% (too high again), but i agree with them that rift was better game at release than swtor.
Wow, they gave Rift a 95%?
I think that kind of kills their credibility regarding "points." I actually thought their review for SWTOR was written well, but I agree that the points make no sense.
Are you team Azeroth, team Tyria, or team Jacob?
You really want to go down the list of features missing from TOR compared to Rift on launch date? I got a thread over on the Rift sub forum if you want to take it there.
Also dead world completely instanced and no public grouping feature.
Oh don't get me wrong...
I actually like Rift. In fact, I find myself sorely missing the PvP in Rift when I play SWTOR.
But Rift does not deserve a 95%. That's all I'm saying.

Industry MMO reviews always seem to fall in this range, it's quite perplexing really. Every MMO seems to be an 8 or a 9 with a few exceptions. Scores on speed dial?

Go on then, post it here.
This doom and gloom thread was brought to you by Chin Up the new ultra high caffeine soft drink for gamers who just need that boost of happiness after a long forum session.
Nothing new for a gaming wesbite to give a game a high score, they all do it. Imagine if they really scored the game for what it was and gave it a 5 or 6. Do you think Bioware would advertise on their website any longer?
Prediction...MMORPG.com and a ton of other gaming sights will give this game an 8 or 80% or higher rating just as TEn Ton Hammer did. Despite all that is wrong with this game, it will not matter, they'll still hand out a good score. If this game gets this type of score than game like Skyrim deserve an 11. See what I did there.
rift got 80-90's in most big review sites and many people here say they hated rift with a passion so take the critic reviews how you want..

I'm posting on a website that has given 8s to games like Aion, so i can't complaign about other reviews much.
Haha ... oh dear .... Teala, you are so deliciously out of touch on this one
No offense but it's really starting to entertain me.
I for am happy that I am able to see the quality in things that are not of my personal preference. You however .... somehow simply can't, which is kind of amusing.
My brand new bloggity blog.
Quality? Do you mean production values?
Just proves a IP can go a LONGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGg way. Next mmorpg should be Pokemon. Just saying with the type of logic the people on this site use.
Quality? Some of the game is good, but to say this game rates an 8..that is in my opinion dishonest. 5 or 6 maybe, but anything above that would be dishonest to potential players. My writings on this game say how I feel and I honestly can't see giving this game more than a 5 or 6 out of 10. That is average...good game, not great, not awesome...just a good game with issues, shortcomings and flaws. Sorry I am not going to be like others and say this game is the best game ever! Because it is far, far from that.
its their opinion and their best 'informed' opinion at that.. but if you class a games review scores as being overly generous, then you have to do the same with all of them as they are probably judged using the same criteria, so if you mark one game down, then you have to mark down them all..
Not sure if anyone can guess why taking this view on the topic is a good one? The reason why taking this approach over hyping the piss out of the game is the Rift syndrome.
You get a lot of people into the game who probably should have never left their current mmo(cough cough WoW players) who feel screwed and spend the next 8 months hating on a game they played for one month.
u know i love how the peole how put this game down go find obscure sites like sandboxer.com to show game sucks with bad reviews then when a reputed site people actually know of rates teh game high they say its a bad review and was paid for
please people when ten ton hammer gives a game an 8 and g4 gives it a 5/5 thenh u know the game is fun and enjoyable
I tell u what id rather read a review from them then read one from some site ive never haeard of .
I still feel my 7-7.5 (depending on the scale) is fair and accurate for what I experienced. To me it implies a game with solid foundations that needs to grow quite a bit.

There you go. A game with a good foundation with room to grow and get better. If you feel it deserves a 7-7.5 I'll respect that.
