I've played quite a few MMORPG's over the years (don't ask how many, let's just say too long to admit to lol) and this is something I've come to note.
Ok so a game comes out and for whatever reason you don't jump on it right away. People who did hit it first thing quickly start playing, finding whatever exploits they can and getting all uber and such. This raises some major problems for new players depending on the circumstances. Some examples...
1. Few players with obscene amounts of gold/items. I'm talking enough to throw the entire in game economy completely out of whack.
2. Players with enough power to blitz any newbie that comes along simply becuase they can.
3. Ubers who end up developing snarky attitudes because of boredom/becoming jaded and taking that out on the rest of the game community.
These are things that I have seen happen quite often and make me extremely hesitant to try games that have been out for more than 6 months. Yes I am aware there are exceptions as far as individual people but I'm specifically speaking in generalities here and I know this.
My basic question is given this pattern of events would you bother trying a game that has been out for a long time? I've seen many a rant from people that did only to find their playing experience completely ruined by players who had started from the get-go.
I wish to God I didn't know now; the things I didn't know then.

I started FFXI two and half months ago. I've been having a blast. The community has been (mostly) nice. I've been able to make my way in the economy and in fact at the moment am decently (but not uberly) outfitted and even have a small slug of cash to boot. The lack of PvP in FFXI mean I haven't had to worry about high-level jerks offing me for fun. The jerks leave me alone (since they can't have fun with me) and the good high-levels have on occassion lent me a hand (not often; I don't often ask for one).

Absolutely, but I'm a lone-wolf player who likes overcoming long odds. If I were more a social junkie, looking for a good team of pals to play the game with I'd probably think twice.
Yes, absolutely. In fact I typically won't buy a new MMO that just got out of Beta because it's been an ongoing trend that MMORPG's are released when they should still be in Beta. It takes about a year for most MMORPG's to become what they promised in Beta (and most still don't make it that far).
I've never had much of a problem catching on to games so that's not an issue and by and large by the time a year has gone by most of the 'bad apples' have moved on to greener pastures and the community has matured. (There are exceptions to this). So usually a game that's been out a year or more has a fairly decent community an established economy and most of the inflation that was caused by exploits has tapered down.
That's just my perception though, others will certainly dissagree.
I violated my rule on 2 games recently:
Horizons & Lineage II
And all that did was remind me that I shouldn't buy a MMO when it first comes out.
What's funny is that in both cases I had beta tested the games.... so I REALLY should have known better. Ahh well Live and re-learn I guess
Currently Playing: Dungeons and Dragons Online.

Elnator,
Very interesting take on the matter. I'll have to ponder that point of view. Thanks.
