SW:TOR | Should i Buy or Just Keep My Money

Ok, for the last week or so i have been debating on whether to buy SWTOR or not and was wondering if you guys could give me some of your Input.

Im more of a person who doesnt really care about a games storyline, although it is something that is good to have and is a bonus if its good, its not my main focus.  But i have heard the SWTOR questing is pretty amazing and engaging.  The main things that i usually look for in a game are -

-Graphics - Have to be excellent, why would i want to play a game that doesnt have good detailed graphics.

-Leveling - Is the Leveling easy or hard to progress in-game?

-Combat and Movenment Animations - Are the Combat skills and animations good? Do they look good or are they just bland?

-Good PvP?

-Good all around Combat?

-Enough Stuff to keep me engaged and wanting to play the game?

I never really got into any games for lengthy periods of time.  I have played plenty of Games including both P2P and F2P but none of them has kept my attention more than 2-4 months,  So i want to know will SWTOR be any diffrent or will it be "Oh ill just buy the game and since it comes with one month game time ill just use that up and then not re-new the subscription?"

-Let me know what you guys input is on the catergorizes above and if its WORTH BUYING or NOT WORTH BUYING according to what im looking for and reasons why?

Thanks

I wish I could tell you where to go for objective answers to these questions, but I can guarantee it isn't here.

All the information you need is in the plenty of subjective opinions on this site. Read the millions of posts everyone is saying and you'll find some good answers to your questions. Also, I'm sure some people will reply with some good answers. Objectivity isn't needed. We are smart enough to interpret subjective information and filter out the nonsense and useless info.

If you like to group up through your adventures, now is the time to get in. If you don't care about grouping and group content, wait for the sale in Feb/March.

I make spreadsheets at work - I don't want to make them for the games I play.

From a purely technical standpoint the graphics are just "meh."  The animations are pretty decent though, and a lot of folks like the graphical style.  I would just watch a youtube video or two of the game to get an idea of what it's like.

-Leveling - Is the Leveling easy or hard to progress in-game?

    Easy :).

-Combat and Movenment Animations - Are the Combat skills and animations good? Do they look good or are they just bland?

As mentioned above, the combat animations are nice and varied.

    -Good PvP?

The PvP is (IMO) "ok."  It's not very good and not very bad.  Some caveats here are:

You can't choose which BG to join.

You can't pull up the scoreboard in the middle of a match.

You can't easily respec (it costs increasing amounts of money) if you want to play different roles in PvP.

The BGs aren't "tiered."  So you may be playing against level 50's at level 11.  You will be bolstered to be "like" a level 50, but you will lack the skills that the level 50 has.

    -Good all around Combat?

I would say it's decent.  Some of the classes have fun abilities, like Bounty Hunter that flies up in his jetpack and rains down missiles.  It's nothing earth shattering though.

-Enough Stuff to keep me engaged and wanting to play the game?

Short term (1-4 months), probably the story is very interesting.  Long term?  Probably not.

I would say it's worth buying, but don't expect anything groundbreaking.  It is basically a "standard" MMORPG with a KOTOR like storyline attached to it.

    Thanks

-Combat and Movenment Animations - They aren't horrible, but not breathtaking after you get used to them. The Star Wars sounds are pretty cool, like the lightsaber noises etc, but I've been told that the animations get a lot better as you progress in levels, I can't confirm this though.

    -Good PvP?

I decided to buy it after playing two beta weekends and here are my two cents, though I may be a little biased:

-Graphics - Graphics are definitely there, they may not be top notch graphics, but after playing WoW for so long anything is a huge upgrade.

-Leveling - Right now I'm finding myself outleveling planets at huge rates. I do every quest I find / can on a planet while avoiding space combat missions. I have done a handful of Warzone matches and even skipped the last two Flashpoints and I seem to just  be joining planets as I should be leaving.

-Combat and Movenment Animations - Are the Combat skills and animations good? Do they look good or are they just bland?

-Good PvP, Its enjoyable for me as of right now, though I haven't been serious with it yet. There are only 3 warzones thus far though, so if you plan on being huge into PvP it may burn out before they roll out with more options.

-Good all around Combat. I am leveling a Sith Assassin and I love the playstyle, a lot of stealth and melee, a little force, just enough to keep things interesting.

-Enough Stuff to keep me engaged and wanting to play the game? Can't say anything about endgame yet, haven't reached it, but the journey there will definitely keep you engaged. The cutscenes are outstanding as well as the leveling options presented. I have heard there are only two raids right now at end game and I'm not sure about how great the PvP is at 50, but I am planning on rolling another character just to experience a new storyline until more content comes out for level 50.

So theres my opinion, obviously it will not be the same for everybody. You may want to check out a couple of livestreams to try and get a feel for yourself. Good luck!

The graphics are pretty good on max,  the art style is another thing....

-Leveling - Is the Leveling easy or hard to progress in-game?

Very easy before level 25... post 30 its very tough and don't even get me started on some of the heroics...  If you  only ever play solo, expect progression to slow to a crawl in comparison.  Should take a couple weeks to a month or so to get 1 character to max, if all you are focused on is leveling.

-Combat and Movenment Animations - Are the Combat skills and animations good? Do they look good or are they just bland?

I like most of the animations,  I also like a lot of the skills,  they aren't too flashy and most of them feel like they have some substance to them.

    -Good PvP?

I enjoy the PvP, it requires strategy, and every class gain special mechanics that are tough to master.

    -Good all around Combat?

Yes, though some boss fights can drag on.

-Enough Stuff to keep me engaged and wanting to play the game?

Not sure about you specifically,  but its kept me busy since the first day of headstart... playing between 8 and 16 hours a day.... I've been on vacation... no signs of slowing.... except.. when I go back to work I suppose.

Though I would say its "not worth buying" if you have doubts.... don't settle...  I think the game is definitely worth the buy...  but thats just me.....  for YOU though...  nobody should be able to answer that question for you....

My hope is that you end up trying it and deciding for yourself.

Questing is better in SWTOR than other mmorpgs.  However, the entire idea of grinding quests is boring.  In SWTOR, the storyline quests are pretty good, but the side quests are your typical boring kill 10 rats.

-Graphics - Have to be excellent, why would i want to play a game that doesnt have good detailed graphics.

They went the WoW route of making the game accessible.  They aren't terrible but aren't spectacular either.  A little bit on the cartoony side.

-Leveling - Is the Leveling easy or hard to progress in-game?

It's very easy to level. A chimp could do it.

-Combat and Movenment Animations - Are the Combat skills and animations good? Do they look good or are they just bland?

I liked the animations.  I thought they were pretty well done.

    -Good PvP?

I hate instanced pvp so i am not a good person to rate this, world pvp seems fairly limited due to all the instancing.

    -Good all around Combat?

It's tab target WoW crap.  This is the single worst part of the game.

-Enough Stuff to keep me engaged and wanting to play the game?

I vote give it a month. They need a few hotfixes and get in after the initial 30 day people leave. It is impossible to determine which servers will be stable. The game has core issues that fans are blatantly ignoring because it is STAR WARS + BIOWARE

  • drbaltazardrbaltazar Member UncommonPosts: 7,856

graphic are guild wars 1 forsaken worldish !not cg but not cartoon ( a la wow)but then wow graphic cartoon are very good looking

as for should you keep your money at the walmart once out the door it will have costed you 102 $+-5 $.time card is 30 $

good for 60 days (if player here are right you get 1 month free ,so it makes 3 month of gaming so it is a bit cheaper.at walmart !i shelled it.i figure this should satisfy me till at least guild wars 2(hopefully)maybe we ll like it so much we ll stay here!i never played ea mmo so i cant judge them.they never had my flavor game, this will be a nice change of pace ,no more medieval stuff or less .way more technological etc!we ll have to wait and see!

ps:i got a question:why do all game install in the program x86 file when microsoft game is only avail in the program file?i followed ms way and installed in windows game file!

outside character animation which i thought was lackluster to the extremes and looping animation npc world fillers the actual world was really well made. reminded me of mass effect 2 for some reason

-Leveling - Is the Leveling easy or hard to progress in-game?

easy easy easy unless you skip ahead on your storyline to a few levels over yours..then expect tons of misses in combat

-Combat and Movenment Animations - Are the Combat skills and animations good? Do they look good or are they just bland?

once you actually engaged mobs it was pretty slick combat..i didnt find it as detailed as wows parry/dodging for example but pretty close..some of the deflect lazerguns with your lightsabre were out of sync though :/

    -Good PvP?

for me NO but then if you like zergfests or wows pvp system its kind of the same..just has some different arenas

    -Good all around Combat?

for sure..unless you take into account mobs just standing in packs guaridng a metre patch of ground watching their friends getting owned by you 5 yards away

-Enough Stuff to keep me engaged and wanting to play the game?

hard to tell..there wasnt enough for me..but i am not you :P

for me i got bored too fast with TOR :( there just isnt enough different things to do outside pvp and flashpoints..can rp i guess but didnt find the world immersive enough to do that

if you can afford it..its worth trying..if you can be patient..i would hold out for a trial or something because its a hit or miss type game i think

Try the game if you don't mind cartoony visuals.

Try the game if you were a fan of the KotoR series.

Try the game if you enjoy single player RPGs.

Try the game if you are content with themepark MMOs.

Don't try the game if you are expecting something new mechanic wise.

Don't try the game if you are expecting a heavy reliance on teamwork.

Don't try the game if you dislike having combat pets.

Don't try the game if you were hoping it would re-invent the MMORPG.

Its not a bad game, it is a well made game that is extremely similar to titles that already exist. The added voiceovers can be cool, but not so much when they are broken up by typical kill quests. Visuals are clean, but aren't going to push anyones system unless you are running things that are a bit dated. The game is very solo friendly, and while you will be able to find people to group up with it is still the same as many modern day MMOs; the community portion is not as strong as it used to be, and many players have the mindset of "If I can do it alone, why should I help out someone else."

If you really need an MMO to play, or have no troubles with the themepark design then this will be a great buy for you and will most likely provide you with a decent amount of playtime provided you aren't a powerleveler or content racer.

Keep your money for now at least.  If they improve the game, then buy it.

Reasoning:  $60 is just not worth a first month of gameplay.

Graphics: I like them. It isn't Aion, but that only means it runs on my computer. It's definitely better than WoW, but its not Eve.

    Leveling is fun.

Combat and movement animations look good, except for vehicles, which are still a bit buggy.

    Can't comment on PvP yet.

    Combat is fun.

Your last question is rather vague. I mean, I'm having fun. It has the Bioware feel, the Sith Inquisitor storyline has me engrossed. If you like Bioware's other games, you'll probably find SWTOR interesting.

I say screw the overall ratings on websites and watch a few videos on the gameplay. See if it has features you are looking for in an MMO. Do you want a theme park? If yes honestly I think it's an amazing themepark mmo. But if you are looking for something completely different than wow or rift or any of those styles of games, than this is definately not for you. Thats why the reviews are so skewed, people are ignorant going into the game hoping it will be some sandbox game that redifines the genre and are pissed off it's just another wow clone with a better story. I like the game, lots of people like it, lots of people don't. I guess wait it out until a trial to come to your own conclusion if it isn't grabbing your attention right now.

I completely agree with this. The release of SWTOR is not the Parousia, or something that utterly redefines games as we know it. But it is fun for me taken on its own terms.

He probably meant the user rating which is sitting at 5.9 / 10.

OP, you should go read the metacritic user comments then make your decision.  Most people seem to either love or hate this game.  It seems like the people who love it are rating it based on the questing and how good the main storyline is.  The people who hate it seem to be complaining about the lack of originality and content.

I decided to pass after playing on a friends account for a couple of hours to see what it was like.  I agree that the storyline was realy good for an MMO, but it just didn't seem like an MMO to me.  Too much instancing and not enough interaction with other players.  For now I am just going to keep playing Skyrim and wait on SWToR.

  • YamotaYamota Member UncommonPosts: 6,593

Well you could make it easy for you and just decide if you want to pay for a game which is fundamentally designed as a single player game or lobby based multiplayer game. If you like those sort of game then you should get your money's worth.

However if you want a persistant, breathing world with lots of places to explore and not so many instances then this game will definetely not be to your liking.

A deeper question to ask yourself is if you want to support the direction SW:TOR is taking the genre. Meaning less world involvement and more single player focus. I for sure dont want to and why I wont be buying the game.

If you want to get an idea how the game plays then think WoW -> Rift -> SW:TOR. They play pretty similarly except that in WoW you have lots more PvP, in Rift you have world invasions and Rifts and in SW:TOR you have well done storylines. Other than that they are pretty much the same.

I do like the game. Well I§d like it way more if it's not so wowish but so far I know it up to level 24 and that's not much.

I hate their sales management. People keep saying it is normal but I never experienced it and I'm not going to accept it - I will rather consider my money I paid for the game stolen. The problem is that you really do not get your game time you purchased with the game until you register a prepaid card or give them your cred card number. Which I can but I don't want.

    But back to the game:

    1. it's the old tank - healer - dd system which is kinda boring but at least some cc's are given to almost every class which is nice.

    2. since I did play a JG tank there is some tanking experience: just one single target taunt, and a stance to generate +50% aggro are the only tools you have up to level 25 to generate more aggro than normal attacks. This is pretty enough since flashpoints (instances in SWTOR) are pretty much tank and spank up to Taris. Problem is that many people don't care about tactics and will aggro left and right and tank just have not enough tools to ge the aggro back so it can be hard for healers. But I liked the group play much more than in wow.

    3. crafting - I actually liked the system. You have your crew of companions who craft, so you are in fact crafting in parallel to playing. You can send your crew to do missions for you to get resources which is handy but it costs you money. You can reverse engineer (disenchant in wow terms) the stuff you create to get some resources back and you have a chance to learn a new schematics. As I said this is a nice system I liked.

    4. space combat minigames - somehow dissapointing, it's practically clicking your mouse on enemy ships and the game is much like some console air combat shooters where your starships just fly and you shoot around ant the targets are overflying you from behind - mostly. I think it would be better more  Xx like. But you can have easy and fast xp and cash from these.

    5. companions - pretty unique feature and I like it. Every class will have several companions which act like your support and have some rp features   - if you played KOTOR series it will be familiar. Very good idea.

    6. combat system - just target and  select combo, nothing innovative about that except smugglers and agents who need to look for cover to use their stronger abilities - again this is a nice idea.

    7. graphics - much like KOTOR. I disliked the body models, nothing as good as AoC, but it beats the terrible wow graphics by a wide margin. When my char started wearing some armor which covered the unnatural body proportions it was feeling OK. Combat animations looked good.

    8. what I absolutely loved were the dialogues. Voiceacting was cool and it was well written. I had some reservations about ls/ds options but it's natural. Big praise for this. I will miss this for sure.

    9. bugs. The game got always stuck on exit, and some of the crew skill recipes I obtained by reverse engineering did disappear - my character had self created pieces of equipment but the schematic for it was missing.

In general I will miss the game but I just cant bear the way they treat customers, so I will have to accept as a fact that EA did stole my money and will not deliver what I bought.

But if you don't mind paying and then paying again to get what you paid for,  just go for it, the game itself is good.

It said "Valid credit card or game time card required to play game" on the front of the box. You can hardly say they stole your money when it explicitely said it wasn't possible to play without one of those.

Reasoning:  $60 is just not worth a first month of gameplay.

Well you will not really get the first month, anyway... they will let you have it after you give them your cc or buy and use an prepaid card.

Why are the forums around here filled with this non-issue?  EA made it very clear that this was a subscription based game.  It's on their website, it's on the box, it's everywhere.  I realy can't beleive anyone bought this without knowing that they would need to subscribe to play.

Not that I am in any way endorsing th game (I actualy won't be buying it myself), but this just seems like a silly thing to be focusing so much forum space on.
