So if EA supports SOPA...

TealaTeala Member RarePosts: 7,627

What other companies tied to the gaming industry support it as well?   If you are not familiar with SOPA and what it means to the internet and how we use it...maybe you should educate yourself.

SOPA  <<< clicky

Imagine that some game company doesn't like a website ---- say MMORPG.com, because well MMORPG.com gave their game a bad review, and in that review the reviewer used images from within the game, SOPA would allow the company to have an injunction put on the website, basically closing it down for copyright infringement through various means.

Just go read about SOPA.

That is pretty scary stuff.

Meh all that will happen is that people will start using servers over seas like they did with movies. They block one site 10 more pop up, they shut down one site and 10 more pop up. They would have to get every country to first actually come to a mutual agreement on how this kind of thing would be handled and second actual enforce it. They don't seem to be able to even do that on the important stuff so not sure if they could on something like this.

There are a multitude of things causing people to resort to piracy, unless those things are fixed then theres really no way to stop it or even limit it much.

    Sad but true.

The only companies or sites this would effect would be legit sites that aren't involved in any kind of piracy etc.

I believe Microsoft supported them at one point, but they recently pulled out. I know for a fact Nintendo still supports it and a couple of Sony branches support it as well. The thing about the Sony part is I'm not sure if it's SCEA in particular supporting them. I know Sony Music, Sony Movies, and Sony Electronics support them, but I'm not sure if SCEA falls under Electronics branch, but obviously, it would make sense if they did.

I jokingly like to refer to myself as a Sony fanboy (it's the only console I own although I do have a gaming PC), but if SCEA is, in fact, supporting this, I have absolutely no problem boycotting them for the forseeable future and I urge everyone else to do the same with any other brands that are behind this bill.

    Here's a list of supporters

All SOPA would do is punish the good sites.  It makes any site responsible for what is posted on it.  Basically kiss things like UTUBE goodbye if this is ever enacted.  It basically eliminates due process.

It does little to prevent piracy.  Worst written law I have seen in a while.

They tried pulling the same crap but worse here in australia earier this year. You seppo's just need to get a hold of whatever system they will use to enforce the SOPA laws and post videos of how to get around it.

Our supposed black list and firewall was pretty easy to cirumvent, making all the politicans, compaines and supporters look like uninformed fools and wasters of millions of tax payers money.

    This isn't about piracy.

Oh, they want you to believe that, yes. They want to convince people they are out to protect IP and stop copyright infringement with lots of flowery words in that bill.

    It's just a disguise.

The two C's — Control and Censorship

Another power grab by big government out to "save" and "protect" all of us.

It will kill US based internet companies and will set this country back decades as all future economic growth relies on the internet.

Effing dinosaurs trying to avoid extinction should not hold back the evolution of an economy/society.

    100% agree.

The internet wouldn't even be worth getting onto anymore if this bill passes.

SOPA & Protect IP would allow putting filters into DNS'es so without tools similar to what Chinese disidents use you would not be able to use foreign sites that are 'blacklisted'. No once bill pass noone will have to ask any other country to blacklist website from their teritory.

I think you don't grasp how this wold be done.

It is made in similar way as Chinese "great internet censorship firewall" is made.   99% of users will be cut off from any content on internet that Corporations will see 'unfit'.   This works, getting over ineternet censhorship in countries like China or Syria requires knowegedle and pain-in-ass measures like tunneling, using secure, anonymous proxies, etc

Websites would be add to blacklist without court approval, Corporation see some website unfit = blacklist it. With many corporations & organisations like RIAA + some goverment agencies websites will be blacklisted UBER fast. That's like dozens or hundreads of employers working on finding & banning websites and other internet content.

    Enjoy USA !

PS. SOPA is one thing, there is second bill called "Protect IP" that is tried to push at same time, - it is basically about same thing and it is NOT better than SOPA.

Total Biscuit about SOPA and Protect IP bills

  • AzmodaiAzmodai Member UncommonPosts: 154

Screw SOPA, if the bill passed than kiss your freedom on internet goodbye. Its just plain dumb and will not even reduce piracy at all. The government and big companies want to have control on everything including the internet. Just imagin what will happen to smaller companies when this Piece of shit passes. I swear the people who though of that have never used the Internet in their entire life, they are 70 years old politicians who dont give a rats ass about us and dont even know WTF the internet is for.

There's actually even more to those who support SOPA (Viacom, etc). Funny enough, it's those same companies that developped the File Sharing Software (Kazaa, Limewire, etc), and EVEN showed on their website how to download songs. Then they turn around and sue people, and pushing forth SOPA. Here's the details: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WJIuYgIvKsc

Well looky here the Bilderb's are making their move to kill the internet, interesting......This is honestly just a way to restrict information, too many people are getting knowledgeable about what is happening around them because of the internet (cures to supposed uncurable diseases, secret laws being passed, etc etc). Why this is messing things up, and now they have to restrict it to keep the sheep from  becoming informed.

2012 is going to be an interesting year indeed....
