Do you think you have a bond with the first mmorpg you played? My first was runescape and i played religiously for 4 years, now i catch my self trying to compare things to Runescape.
Dont get me wrong, I hate runescape, but do you think that since it was my first mmorpg that i have some sort of deep feeling for it?
ps: who else cant wait for FF7 to come out for psp?

Runescape was also my first MMORPG, but the only "deep feeling" I have is hatred .
But, I understand from those who started with EverQuest, that there is no feeling like it. No, I'm not jealous .
P.S. Yup. Bit worried about Crisis Core being an "action RPG" though. I like turn-based battle systems.
World War III was fought mainly with proxy nations and other indirect methods. We won, by the way. World War IV is being fought with suicide bombs and counterinsurgency. It is desperately needed that we win this one, too.

My first MMORPG was Final Fantasy XI, and you're right, I find myself comparing other games to FFXI because it's what I expect an MMORPG to be since it's the first one that I ever knew (and also the best I've ever played, still)
"Cyberspace. A consensual hallucination experienced daily by billions of legitimate operators, in every nation, by children being taught mathematical concepts... A graphic representation of data abstracted from the banks of every computer in the human system. Unthinkable complexity. Lines of light ranged in the nonspace of the mind, clusters and constellations of data. Like city lights, receding..."

Tried all mmorpgs, these are the ones i will list because they mean sumthing to me!

The first MMO's I ever played were MUDS and, yes, I do sometimes find myself comparing MMORPG's to them. The first Graphical MMORPG I played was NeverWinter Nights on AOL back in the early 90's and no, I dont compare to it. I do compare games to EQ and UO though.

MoooOOOoooo!
Erm... no, it's not an MMORPG
MMORPG requirements:
1) Persistant world meaning when you log out the game keeps going and things keep happening while you're offline.
2) It must support massive ammounts of players online simultaneously.
3) It must be an RPG.
Warcraft 3 was a CORTS game.

My first was UO. It's funny but only recently have I felt the yearning for it with all the talk on these boards. Everquest was my second, and that was just an amazing experience. I remember my first character Tubben doing his armor quest in Rivervale with me and my buddy takin turns learning to play as we drank beer. Those 2 games were the magic for me and games have come close but don't seem to capture the magic.
Lineage 2 did at first but then I learned what the game was like. Playing a Dragon in Horizons is bringing that magic back for me, that feeling of doing something new where every next move is highly exciting and anticipated.
The first MMO I ever played was Meridian 59 and I can't really say it had that great of an impact on how I judge games. Don't get me wrong, when EQ came out I immediately saw it as a Meridian 59 knock off with prettier graphics but after I had played UO and Asheron's call, I began comparing all the new games to those two. I loved the freedom of UO but hated the interface. I loved just about everything about Asheron's Call except the lack of balance in character types. To this day I really don't see the difference in core gameplay between EQ and Asheron's Call. They're both third / first person, they both involve alot of walking and resting between battles and the interfaces are just about identical. The only way to tell the two apart is by the graphics (AC does some stuff that EQ can't).
Ultimately, I agree with the guy who said that your favorite game is more important than the first one you played when it comes to judging new games.
r u my twin or are you my best friend
that is exactly everything i would say
Well...im not your twin, but i could be your best friend
(in no way is warcraft 3 a mmorpg) ( but we still love you )
Oh my gosh, my first mmorpg was Everquest. I was so hooked on that game, I couldn't peel myself away from it until 4 years after I started. I retired from the game cuz I really needed to focus on graduating from college, and I promised myself that I'll dive back into an mmorpg as soon as I got my degree.
Well, of course I wanted to get back into EQ, but starting out as lvl 1 when you were once a lvl 65 just made me feel kinda weak. So I thought, hey.. why not look at other games. Yeah I had my eye on WoW, but it didn't give me the same thrill that EQ provided. In EQ, I was a lvl 65 wizard, so of course I'm going to compare my mage in WoW with my EQ wizzy. Just wasn't the same. No sir indeed. The wizard was MUCH more powerful and awe-striking. I could walk into Freeport feeling arrogant for being a wizard. But in WoW, there's nothing special about a mage.
That's when I realized that I had to "search" for that game that would be AS GOOD as EQ, if not better.
I've been doing free trials out the yinyang. Tried, EQ2 (of course), AO, EvE, DAoC, and I think I'm going to give Saga of Ryzom a whirl. I think DAoC came closest to capturing the magic that EQ had.
In EQ, it was so much easier for me to make friends. My friends list was HUGE! But in WoW, I just have 2 buddies whom I hardly ever see. EQ was bigger geographically, which i like. There were four pure caster classes in EQ (nec, enc, wiz, mag) .. whereas in WoW, only 2. The list goes on and on.
Yeah I find myself comparing all sorts of things, and just getting disappointed more and more.
Has anyone else fell in love with EQ but can't seem to find an adequate replacement for the awesome legendary mmorpg?
My first MMORPG was also the one I played the longest; UO. Tried to go back (on "traditional" servers) and its just not the same anymore...live server is pathetic too.
my first was Anarchy Online
I didn't play for long (only 6 months orso) but it did make a deep impact.
no mmog after managed to amaze me as much, and I still remember it fondly
(I even played for a while on a free account, visiting all my old favorite places, but the gamer changed beyond anything I reconize. damn subway.) and while I judge every mmog on it's own merits I am still hoping for one that can amaze me as much as AO
but I guess, much like a first kiss, that won't ever happen again

PLEASE SOE MAKE A CLASSIC EQ SERVER. Shadow of luclin was a prick in EQs side. PoP Was a gun to the face.
mine is diablo 1 & dark ages.
Nope. My first online game was Meridian 59 which I didn't like at all. Ultima Online, my second online game I have many fond memories of, and I loved. My thrid online game was EQ. Okay game but I didn't get into it... probably didnt play it enough to get into as much as I could have. My fouth online game was AC, which is still my all-time favorite online game. I have the highest connection with AC. I played a lot of online games after AC, but never got taken away from it completely. Of all the online games I have tried since AC, and it's a helluva lot of them, DAoC is my favorite mmo since then.
I think the connection has more to do with the quality of the game you play and what you value in a game and the time you spend with it then it does if it was your first online game or not.
