Coverage of UXO

AdminAdmin Administrator RarePosts: 5,623

Hello everyone.

Well, I have spent the last 5-6 hours putting together our coverage of the Ultima X: Odyssey event.  I believe we are one of the first sites with this information because most of the pack is flying home while I am still stuck in San Fran with my laptop and luckily a broadband line in my room image

You can check out the preview at: http://www.mmorpg.com/uxo_preview.cfm - please spread the word to anyone you can!

Thanks!

    Nicely written review.

Well I can understand them not making it anything to do with UO and brittiania since they got a lot of stick for not letting UO2 thru so have to make it not looked like the UO2 they should have released but an totally new game.

Most exhibitions use the highest end computers to demonstrate their work to allow for fluent and complete show of their graphics but looking at the graphics it does not seems more intense then what AC2 has to offer so I think it would run quite smoothly on a geforce3ti.

This is a good thing because it opens up the market to the average gamer really.

The use of the unreal engine shows because yes it does look like unreal graphics and the characters too.

However it would be intresting to see how the engine holds out in a MMO setting despite it has proven itself in small scales.

Ok it says real time action  with timing for combat(not a good thing if not on broadband) but what makes this game any special from all those million and 1 MMO coming out before it.

Probabaly be a good game ,but honestly so far does not sway my intrest from EQ2,WoW,horizons or dragons empire .So far that is.

It sounds like a good game,  but I kinda don't like the idea of "twitch" base fighting... meaning...  you have to time your moves, etc...  like a FPS game (DOOM).

Other then that it sounds and looks good.  I've always been a UO fan...

The combat is not THAT much "twitch based".  However, it does require some interaction on your part.  You will need to click when you want to swing, but it seems pretty easy compared to any FPS games (ie you don't have to aim at all, your target is always locked).

I can honestly say this game was a lot of FUN!

Well even if the combat system is the best  I doubt any MMORPG will have a fun combat system like a FPS.

Basically because FPS are designed for one purpose only combat .

Most people play RPG for character advancement, quest, exploration, crafting, dungeon crawls, big mob killing, social interaction etc.

Now what I like to know is what makes this game unique enough to say "ah I am going to drop horizons,EQ2 or WoW" for this.

Granted apart from horizons with some innovative ideas the other 2 games i listed have so far showed me nothing really innovative and new like DAoC did with RvR.

Basically they only have names behind them and probabaly better graphics  but if UOX is nothing more then like this games I can't see what excitement I can gain from it over the rest by time it comes out.

Considering how many games will be out in next year I think most of us would skip even playing many  and pick 1 or 2 we like(how many people have time for more then 1 MMO even at a time).

I think one of the things that will make UXO stand out, at least from current titles is the quest system.  At least 50-70% of your time will be spend doing quests.

Developers mentioned things such as seeing some NPC steal a loaf of bread and you have to make choice...give the poor lad a few gold coins and lecture him on the downfalls of stealing...or draw your blade and bring him to justice.  Your choice will determine your path.

If they pull this off it will be amazing. And with the concept of private zones that feel like single-player worlds - I think it is possible (because other players can't interfere with your experience).

I don't think this game will make everyone drop everything and flock to it like a bug to light...however, I think it will offer a fresh alternative to those looking for something a little bit different.

Private zones are such a....rotten idea though. You say singleplayer, and thats the whole point, its an MMRPG, it shouldnt have any singleplayer aspects. Geez, that game boundless adventures or whatever its called, should of copyrighted the idea, considering every new MMRPG is having it.

If used sparingly, it is ok I think.  I would say Anarchy Online actually started the "private zone" concept before anyone...they have had private dungeons for many years now.

I would not like to see a lot of the game exist in single-player worlds, but certain portions of a quest being that way is nice for game flow (ie not waiting for the camp to clear to get the item needed, instead make the battle to get the item challenging and not getting an open shot at it the challenge).

Also important to note that the private zones are not single-player but can allow many people in them (they are even talking about possibly allowing guilds to have "training zones" where guilds can have their own persistent zones to play in).

The best part of this game is combat though...it is a lot of fun.  I think you will see a lot of Diablo players cross into UXO, which will be a huge market share for them.  This was apparent with the invitation of a large Diablo II web site to the event (forget their name).

I disagree with you totally. Yes an MMORPG is mainly the way it is because of interaction with others just as real life is, however are there those in real life that work alone. Sure there are. In a MMORPG I tend to like to converse with people, buy and sell crafted gear and help out others but when fighting or questing I generally like to solo unless I really know the other people well. I will group up with the best of my friends but beyond that I solo. I feel that this is also an integral part of any game. I do agree that private zones takes away from the realism somewhat but I think that the benefits far outweigh the negatives. City of Heroes seems to have it right so far....

    Shots out!

Maybe in a NPvP game people enjoy it because well, thats all they do, camp monster spawns, and camp loot, and they dont want any interference. But in a PvP game, it would take away conflict, and would allow people to stay holed up in their little cave killing orcs 24/7. Also even in a NPvP game, you say you dont want to have to wait in line for some uber item or whatever. Maybe instead that they should make it more type of realistically, uber items, are one time only, leveling, would have something to do with training or sparring with other people. That way instead of tedium, when you go out to kill orcs, there is more of a goal then to get to the ph4t l3wt spawn before another group, or to level up. But to rather, what RPG's are suppose to be about, to have an adventure.

There is nearly on every fan board I came to discussions threads about solo vs. group play.

For me it comes down to freedom of choice both solo and grouping must be worth while since one simply can not play always with friend.  I want to add I have played in games where grouping was enforced latest exsample AC2 and it is no fun looking for groups 30+ mins or longer also in such random groups chances are high someone get upset which on a regular bases takes the fun out of gaming.

Personly I prefer to play as a lone wolf and comepete in some form with others thur some sort of achivement. When of course a friend group forms to achive something special I am all for it but group play all the time with random would make me frustrated over the time ...

And you dont need "private dungeons" to do that, take AC1, the quintessential solo game. But it didnt have private dungeons.
