They have a lot to learn about doing maintenance and patches, which is a shame really given how many of them come other MMOs.
There are people working on SWTOR with experience from a huge range of companies and MMOs, yet they are still making newbie mistakes with their first patch.
First off, this is not their first patch.
Also, lets talk about the biggest MMO out right now, WoW. When they have big patches the game is unplayable for days, and the game has been out what 7 years now?
The thing is. They could atleast update us on what's going on. Instead they give us the same update, they did an hour ago... I don't mind it's down for a long time, cous mistkes happens. But i would like to know what's going on. Sitting here clueless
I guess you never played WoW? The server could be down the entire day and you wouldn't get any kind of response from Blizzard about whats going on.
Get a damn job, and you wouldn't have to worry about servers being down at 1pm on a tuesday.

Exactly what I'm saying. If there are those that feel they need to be told what exactly is going on i'm sure they have someone sitting at a phone waiting for you to call them so they can take the time to tell you EXACTLY what they are doing with the maintenance. Give them a call shoot the bull for awhile see how that works out for you. Or you can keep crying...

Rule number one of server maintenance. Take whatever time estimate you predict and times it by 3. :P
Yeah better to say they will be down all day and deliver in half the time than to go the other way around. If you overestimate, you look the hero bringing things back early. if you underestimate people just get pissed/frustrated. Oh well.

I have a damn job. I work 40+ hrs a week between 2nds and thirds. I work weekends, weekdays, and everything inbetween. This downtime would effect me if I was playing the game. Maybe you need to realize not everyone works a 9-5 monday through friday job? Next time you go out to eat on a saturday the waitress or cook needs to tell you to go make the food your damn self. Need to go grocery shopping in the evening or weekend? Tough shit no one works odd hours to make your life easier right?
That said, I dont see a reason to complain about it. When its done it will be time to play regardless of how much people rage.

I really dont get how it takes hours and hours just to add a updated client/patcher/server client to their own servers. Unless they also run a closed test for a few hours after updating(which I guess is likely), and catch last minute bugs they have to go back through and fix.
