I am just curious about the sandbox housing thing. I love housing and I would like to see it in every MMO.
The best housing system I've ever seen in an MMO was EQ2's housing. It is instanced based housing yet it is damn good. Can someone tell me if there is a sandbox game with a better housing system?
Ultima Online. Houses existed out in the open world and not in an instance. I think any game that has housing out in the open world has a better housing system.
How good a housing system has less to do with where you put the house, but what you can do when you're in it. Just because anyone in the world can walk into your empty box, doesn't make it superior to a box you have the ability to customize from top to bottom.
Personally i am a strong believer that GW2 will walk the middle of the road. While there will be no FFA PvP the dynamic events should give players a real sandboxy feeling, and character building should allow for much more freedom then the usual skill tree progression.
Do you think that GW2 can satisfy the average Joe sandbox fan?
dynamic events does not a sandbox make. also with WAR/RIFTs so called Dynamic events, im leary as to what GQ2 may through our way. just more public quest imo but i havent seen them so there may still be hope. and i do NOT belive any of these themeparks will ever satify any sandboxer gamer.
Sadly no it cant....Simply put the money gw makes is mostly based on expansions to the game each expansion has a theme and a story, these are generally the same aspects of any "theme park " game....And while it offers a wealth of independant things from story line that you can do, it still has a "theme park" basis.....
on a side note....I really hate the term "theme park" Them park generally revolves around reacurring characters in story lines. The fact that game that are labeled this have a story universe the game takes place in and sights and sounds involving this aside, What makes a game a "theme Park". What ever happened to the term fan boy...Like Mario fan boy or wow fan boy. Rather then attacking the moronic player making some insane comment, we have now turned on a game system....Dont get me wrong I go to game forums and talk trash to devs s aying things like your game is more laggy then Micheal J. Fox writing a letter, Or This game has more bugs then a New York Appartment. And while this may seem as flaming or trolling, personally I just place the blame where it lies....
So please for god sake call it what it is.
we are calling them what they are... Themeparks. ask yourself what it is you do at a theam park. you have static ride that you have to get in line for. the same places to eat. sure its fun for the first 3 or 4 hours your there but the longer you stay the more borde you become. how many time can you rind the same ride or eat at the same place? you have to play inside there little gated area untill you just had enough. thats why we call them theamparks.
Seriously GW2 is not sandbox. It will be decent game I am sure. I am planning to play it myself (sandbox player here),but it is by no means a sandbox. Dynamic events might be considered a BIT sandboxy, but one feature that is just a bit sandboxy does not make a sandbox game. Whole game concept and whole framework is deffo themepark.
This is no flame start.
Imho GW2 is / will be something like themepark ver 2.0 and not sandbox.
Don't forget about WvW with objectives that are upgradeable by resources you have to secure first. That totals up to two "sandboxy" features, which constitute very large part of the gameplay available. Of course, it's not enough to call it sandbox or possibly even sandpark, but it's more than any themepark MMO offered so far.
Yupp, it's not a sandbox at its core by a long stretch but it is definitely moving in what I feel is the natural evolution of the genre - and that is a themepark/sandbox hybrid... unlike that zombie frankenstein's monster that is TOR.
...and what is even more important, it does so seamlessly unlike Archeage which, although I like a lot that I'm seeing, seems a bit clunky with old themepark and sandbox elements stitched together rather than inventing a whole new paradigm which is what GW2 is trying to do.
True, though ArcheAge offer more sandbox features than GW2 will. Anyway don't wanna starrt flamewar.
I will propably play both of this mmorpg's (first time in my life 2 mmropg at one time. Normally I am serial monogamist).
I am not playing any mmropg atm (bored to death with railed instance & gear grinders and half-assed indie productions).
Both AA and GW2 seem to have unique but very diffrent designs and features, I think they actually both have potential to be decent games even though that they will offfer diffrent kind of gameplay.

Exactly that is the definition to a tee,but i'm hopeing GW2 will be a game changer in the genre, quite frankly if the dynamic quest system works as intended then maybe we will need a new word to redefine the game as a concept.
It's a themepark for sure. It's going to be a bit less linear than some of the more recent themeparks that channel you down very specific paths (SWTOR, Rift, WAR), but it's still a themepark.
The crazy thing is that some people think that the definition of themepark is essentially a "WoW clone." It's like they can't conceptualize anything other than WoW or a hardcore FFA-PvP full-loot sandbox existing. I think when these people see GW2, their heads may explode lol .
i mean really guys, "not quite a themepark", "but not a sandbox either." lol, just call it a playground or something and be done with it.
Lol,i was thinking more like calling it a Sandpit,u got some sand and as it's a pit u have less freedom than full on Sandbox, but more features than a convential Themepark, well sounds good in my head anyway !!!
they read some things on the internet.. and have no idea what the meaning of words are..
Start debatting about sandbox games without having any clue what that word means..
guildwars 2 has nothing to do with sandbox get this straight in your head pls.
Sandbox is defined by players changing the world, and GW2 offers that in both DEs and WvW. You can cause persistent changes in the world, only difference between GW2 and sandboxes is that in GW2 choices are much more limited. It's not enough to call it sandbox, but it's enough to have something to do with it.
Also i want to point to poeple that sandbox is a design choice, so when a dev team from a game say they are not doing a sandbox, well that probably mean they are not doing one
It is not PvP or the lack of it that sells, it is well made games that are fun to play. Most sandbox games have failed miserably there, mostly because almost all of them are made by small and inexperienced companies.
Who says pvp has to be violent? There's a decent case that everything in ATITD is intrinsically pvp. And also that nothing is. Is dealing with the consequences of someone selling on Ebay the ability to ban people from the game a pvp or pve activity?
Might open your horizon a bit. Also i want to point to poeple that sandbox is a design choice, so when a dev team from a game say they are not doing a sandbox, well that probably mean they are not doing one
A sandbox game is a type of video game level design where a player can roam freely through a virtual world and is given considerable freedom in choosing how to approach objectives.[1] Video games that include such level design often are referred to as "free roam" games.
This sounds very much like how i envision the open world of GW2 with all its dynamic events and the WvWvW part of the game.

I don't think some features make a sandbox game. I mean its not as if you are going to number the "open" and "close" features they have and then decide what the game is about. I don't know i must be a strange guy because i don't need more than few minutes to understand if a game is a sandbox or a themepark. Maybe because for me sandbox is not defined by features but by the overall design of a game.
But ye, let's say you could just talk about some sandboxy features alone. Ye you could probably find some in GW2 like the flat leveling curve 'sandbox tend to have no level or class) or the open to all raid mechanism they boosted with scenario, hum DE is it ? The WvW, i'm really not sure tbh, a small part of the world is hardly open. If people say "its open pvp", its just because everyone in them is flagged to pvp, there is no pvp switch mechanism like flags or whatever switch you could come up with. But i don't think it's open in a sandbox way, especially with the reset every few weeks.
But still the game is a themepark overall, no doubt here, its just a more interesting than what we usually play. You also have boring sandbox, those are not hard to find, grind, pk, grind, pk...

This whole thing is always really debatable, but I still think GW2 is much closer to a themepark than a sandbox. Reason being that it will still have level segmented zones. So there is still going to be a fairly guided experience from 1 to 80.
It almost reminds me of how EQ was. The zones were level segmented, but you could go to whatever zone was in your level range (there were a bunch typically). So you had some choices, but there was still a clear, developer-guided, progression going on.

This is true, BUT it is still a freer experience than in most MMOs due to sidekicking of players, which keeps the lower-level world from becoming irrelevant and enables people to experience higher-level content without a 100% chance of failure. This would place GW2's world somewhere on a continuum where it's farther to the "sandbox" side than most other level-based MMOs, while still not firmly a "sandbox."
Even in Skyrim there were places you could not go and survive unless you had achieved higher combat levels.
GW2 is no sandbox. It's a themepark MMORPG that introduces content types to the genre and subgenre that actually make sense. Just like quests, DEs have consequences, which means it is an RPG, where choices are important. However this doesn't make it a sandbox. Minecraft is sandbox and Eve Online aswell. Players change the world they inhabit and are not bound to strict rules. That doesn't happen in GW2, the engine even limits DEs to one particular zone.

Noboddy said that gw2 will be a full sandbox game. Sandbox and themepark are extremes and all mmos can be placed somewhere on the line between these two. I personally beleive that GW2 is much closer to the middle of the line then wow or swtor. I nor anyone else said that GW2 would be a full sandbox game, i just said that GW2 will have enough sandbox features to make almost all sandbox fans feel at home in the game, without chasing the themepark players away.

Which features do you think are more "sandboxy" (is that a word?)?
Those feautures have allready been called in this topic.
But i think it comes down to those features that allow a player to roam freely through a virtual world and where he is given considerable freedom in choosing how to approach objectives.
-Class system allows you to build very diverse characters inside a single class, allowing everyone to build something special
-Dynamic events have more then one objective allowing you to choose freely
-Boss battles allow you to choose from different taks
-In WvWvW PvP, you have a choice of many objectives and how to finish them.
-Even your personal story is less linear then in SWTOR, your choices can really branch your story.
-and, and, and.....
Everything you do in GW2 evolves around choice. Choices that really matter, and exactly thats what gives sandbox players a good feeling.

Yeah I agree with this. The downward level scaling may make the world feel more "open." We'll have to see if the rewards for participating in a lower level DE are actually worth it though.

Isnt participating in them and having fun helping others not reward enough?
In that case the way dynamic events handle rewards allows for rewards based on the player level.

Eh, it depends on your perspective. If I'm helping my friend and they want the help, then yes.
But to be honest, sometimes I would rather go without the "help" of a much higher level player in most modern MMORPGs. One of the big reasons I play video games is to challenge myself, and in a game that's already fairly easy, having a big brother around to constantly "help" you just gets annoying. It feels like you're riding around with training wheels on.
This could happen in Rift and WAR a lot. I remember in Rift there would often be higher level players farming Rift events. They not only made it less lucrative for lower level people, they also just made it plain boring.
Hopefully the level scaling will be severe enough that a level 80 person will still have some challenge in a lower level DE.
I'm a veteran D&D player, so I agree wholeheartedly, I like the threat of dying or at least a cloes battle, I feel cheated in games where I can beat what should be a very difficult boss without a scratch, plus finishing with 10 percent health is much more of a rush and feels like an accomplishment.
