trolling SWTOR forums is more fun than playing Rift apparently
All the TOR trolls who used to hang out on the Rift forums are now here. I just followed the crowd. We should be migrating over to the GW2 forums here in a month or so.
Bioware probably saw an average of $70 per unit sold of Standard, Deluxe and CE.
It appears they had 2 million registed accounts by 12/23.
So, that is about $140 million in revenue alone.
Let's say they keep 1 million users a month after thirty days...
That is 15 million / month in revenue.
Now, how much does George Lucas get?
Oh, they'll turn a nice profit on this one allright.
And that's the problem with treating a game purely on the basis of profitability. The reason they made another cookie cutter MMO is because their market analysts said it will turn a healthy profit, and they were very likely right.
There is no passion in AAA game industry anymore, just like in blockbuster Holywood movies. It's all just market projections and zombified audiences.
Hell, these days, if I want a decent, interesting game and innovative gameplay, I have to go to the modding scene. Sadly, that's out of the question when it comes to MMO's, for obvious reasons.

you have to subtract production costs ($300 million), server maintenance, employees and so on. Numbers aren't on your side, yet.
I am only guestimating revenue to date, not profit.
But, officially, the game production apparently cost anywhere from $80 to $150 million to make the 12/20 release. I would like to know where you got $300 mil from... it is very unlikely it cost $300 to produce. That is, the Engineering costs. Now, it could be some absurd licensing costs are included in that $300 million effort.
Also, server costs are largely irrlevant to start up costs since servers are Amortized over time.
So, like the Force not taking sides, I am not sure what your "side" remark means.
I would like to know where you got $300 mil from...
here and other blogs, but this may be a rumor from the disgruntled laid off employee's blog. The truth may be found somewhere in the middle between the rumors and the official statements. But you're right, since my source is most likely inaccurate I'll rectify it for the sake of the truth.

I am very skeptical of that $300 million dollar estimate. This means they expect SWTOR double the revenue size of the MMORPG segment... that is, they expect to own 1/3 to 1/2 of the market. And frankly, the game isn't good enough.
Now, I could believe the $300 milion if that takes into account Lucas' licensing and other IP rights. But for the core development and release of the game Engine itself, I highly double the $300 million figure.

Was marketing added into that $300 million figure?
That Guild Wars 2 login screen knocked up my wife. Must be the second coming!
