I would have thought Skyrim would win game of the year. Star Wars is good too. Like the host said, It has revolutionized the MMO industry.
If I invent a mustard bottle that tells a story when you squeeze it on your hotdog I don't think it would revolutionize the condement industry. I still don't see how this game has revolutioized anything .
That's kind of a foolish analogy, considering the fact that mustard bottles don't in any way have anything to do with grinding out quests in a video game. But continue to use any outlandish example you'd like to prove your point.
Skyrim would probably have my vote for game of the year, although I personally enjoy TOR more than I do Skryim, but that's strictly due to game mechanics. But that's neither here nor there. The haters continue to spout the same bullshit about TOR not being innovative, and it continues to fall flat as an argument. Fact is, the story and voiceovers ARE innovative because they haven't been done in this capacity in a AAA MMO before...period. Bioware did exactly what they said they were going to do, and that is to bring the fourth pillar of story into the MMO genre.
You may not be impressed with that, or you may just get off on brushing it aside to make a point about how dull you think the game, is, but the fact is that it hasn't been done to this extent before, and it HAS been a great addition to the MMO genre because for many of us it has taken the grind out of themepark questing. To many, many people, that's pretty fucking innovative.
TOR isn't changing the genre, but it has improved certain aspects of the themepark style. Denying that doesn't change the fact.
Good post however your wrong. In january sony released DC Universe online, which uses alot of cutscene and voice acting for its quest system....But this is another proof that this is where the industry is taking gaming, [Mod Edit]
hmmmm seeing as im 33, and most of my customer base plays the game and are over the age of 25 and many of which are in families and have rather nice jobs. So pardon me if I poke holes in your this is a young mans game theory as you seem to forget star wars is over 30 years old and as a rather eclectic fan base and many of which would accept as well as embrace this game and would be over the age of 25.....

Probably simply about how much mainstream press and recognition the game has received. Gamer nerds such as us of have a different perception of what warrants "game of the year" compared to what mainstream news media bases such a criteria on. It's all about wide exposure.

while I agree many other games would be more worthy I do not think Skyrim should be listed and for one simple reason.
THE GAME STALLS AND CRASHES ON BOTH PC AND CONSOLE. However this has become the trademark of Bethesda games so really that not with standing the game is rather fun.
To folks who have actually played the game, agree, it's meaningless.
But... Lots of folks are easily swayed by the opinions of others. How often do you see people come to the forums on this site and ask people what they think of game XYZ because they're thinking about buying it? And how many consumers are there who like games (or want to buy one for a friend/family member who does) and don't have anything else to go on? Awards such as these do influence public perception, period.
I'm waiting for Fox's counter-game of the year award.

Well said.
What was it they said they were going to do? Glue voiceover story on top of an otherwise mundane MMORPG game? If that's what they said they were doing, then you are correct.
As you are starting to see, that story element is very controversial for an MMORPG game, and it doesn't work for a lot of people.
A sure sign that you are in an old, dying paradigm/mindset, is when you are scared of new ideas and new technology. Don't feel bad. The world is moving on without you, and you are welcome to yell "Get Off My Lawn!" all you want while it happens. You cannot, however, stop an idea whose time has come.
Best MMO of the year? Sure, I can go for that....but the bar isn't too high IMO - e.g. Rift...not a bad game, but not a strong contender by my reckoning.
Best *game* of the year? Heck no! Skyrim is leagues better. Deus Ex : HR is also better as far as I'm concerned.
Whats next FOX news game of the year. If they give me 100k i will say its game of the year to.
Yeah yeah we get it. EA is paying MSNBC, mmorpg.com, eurogamer; ign.com and pretty much any forum /media outlet which is giving positive reviews to SWTOR.

LOL so adding a crap ton of voice over is now considered revolutionizing the genre?!?! thats like saying I am going to revolutionize the movie industry by adding big ass explosions to EVERY scene.

Positive reviews are fine ... saying it revolutionized the genre is not.

Revolutionary, innovative, next gen use whatever word you like but it would be hard to find people to agree on similar definition because people interpret these terms on basis of their own prespective. If some people find SWTOR revolutionary i don't see why it offends other. I don't react in negative manner when people say GW2 is so unique and innovative.

Well we know FOX news wouldn't give the winner to SWTOR. It has too much sex, violence, evil people attempting to corrupt youths, and waaaay too many aliens taking peoples jobs.
I'm not afraid to tell trolls what they [need] to hear, even if that means for me to have an forced absence afterwards.

only way fox will recomend a game will be if its played by a high ranking political official who happens to be a republican.
Im feel kinda let down. I was hoping to see Chris Matthews tell how he got all tingly in the legs over TOR.
Really? This game sucks and Im not having fun? Im going to unsub right now. Thanks for the tip.

Oh and let the hater "MSNBC was bought off by EA" whining begin lol
Currently playing SWTOR and it's MUCH better than it was at launch.

MMORPG players are upset that an MMO won game of the year? I'm thrilled that our genre got some props in the mainstream media.
Well we know FOX news wouldn't give the winner to SWTOR. It has too much sex, violence, evil people attempting to corrupt youths, and waaaay too many aliens taking peoples jobs.
I think simon says would win.
Congratulations Bioware.
I might get banned for this. - Rizel Star.

I picture all the anti-tor loonies that say EA is paying all these media people off sitting in a basement with tinfoil hats on.
