Hey gents,

After being sorely disappointed in SWTOR I've decided I might want to check out EQ2 again. I always enjoyed the game, but was dismayed that there were never any groups. I'm at the point where I really just want to group. I don't enjoy soloing. Its boring, and frankly, single player games are better at that.

So, please give me an honest answer. No fanboi mumbo jumbo about how its always been a populated game. I'm interested in non stop grouping like there is in DDO and how MMOs used to be.

Also, are the BGs popular? When I last played I waited 2 hours for a BG to pop, and just eventually gave up and never logged back in.

Thanks for any objective feeback.

Honestly have you tried Rift?  I used to play EQ2 and had the same issues with it you did but I love Rift and also didn't enjoy SWTOR.

Yes, I tried Rift. Loved some aspects. Hated the lame questing system inspired by another game. Found that it was not populated enough to support groups even though I was on a High populated server(makes you wonder what High means nowadays). I think I tried it again 2 months ago, and sat in the LFG queue for a good while.

Did they ever implement a cross-server lfg system?

The Freeport server is very full, you probably wont have trouble finding groups here and there... but nonstop grouping? I dont think it is likely. EQ2 turns very easily into a single player game. Unless you happen to find a good group of people to play with, which does happen.

BGs are not easy to get into from my experience. The same problem with the dungeon finder tool. It doesnt pop up all that often, and when it does groups are not balanced in the slightest, people end up playing sloppily with little communication and end up leaving after 10 minutes anyway.

but yeah, grouping does exist, but I wouldnt expect it to be available all the time.

If you want a group mmo, try ff 11 and ff 14

No grouping outside of existing friends / guilds really. People solo farm plat to buy raid epics. Battlegrounds rarely pop, and when they do they are just bad.

So yeah, dont bother. Try another game. Although as an ex-EQ2 player I would suggest avoiding Rift. It is an insult to your intelligence, unless you find spamming a one button macro to be fun, in which case go for it.

I do pickup groups in EQ2 all the time on the Freeport server with complete strangers

after level 60, pickup groups kind of dry up

Pick up groups do exist. They are fairly abundant comapred to other games, really. Not only groups, but I have been in very successful pick up raids. I just dont think you could level with them.  I suppose it depends on the server though. They are doing merges, however.

70-80 at least is pretty much all Unrest, all the time.

You'll rarely have one character that's appropriately geared, so goodluck trying to any of the real instances in the level range. (Especially 75+ range.)

Out of a month or so of LFD runs I had maybe five real groups.

    (Appropriate gear, ability.)

The last time I tried it I had to solo Befallen while the group hid behind me.

Note, that's my experience with LFD as a necromancer with all mastered spells + fabled gear.

I DID get lucky and get a handful (2, actually) REAL groups with a guild of apparent alts who were leveling their characters the old fashion way, too bad being outside the "clique" they were dirty on loot rules.

I was referring mostly to end game groups with my response sorry. Havent bothered looking for a group for anything less than 90 in years since they made gear so overpowered you can solo the dungeons at that level. Now with mercenaries, theres even less reason to group up.

At max level on both Unrest and Splitpaw where I raided you would barely see one pick up group per night, and usually after a well geared person for EoW, Drunder or hard mode Zek. Not really new player friendly. You rarely see people look for Kael or TOFS (the newbie 90 zones). I cant attest for the other servers, I imagine Antonia Bayle and Freeport has more stuff going on since its the most populated server.

I grouped Drunder and EoW all the time within my guild, but saying this game has more pick up grouping in it than other games is definitely a lie.

The new looking for group tool is a complete joke. Noone at max level will touch it because the groups it makes are horrible.

There are groups to be had but your best bet is to find a progression guild that runs groups on a regular basis.  Freeport and Antonia Bayle servers are the most populated and probably have the most progression guilds that I have seen.  I use to play mainly on the test server and have recently went to AB server I am still pretty low level and am always willing to group. If you so choose to play on the AB server look me up my toon there is Mortimeer and I am in a little guild called Art of War.

Last few weeks lots of things changed as well, all is under a new free-2-play bussiness model now,

So try out the game(again) and look around, and do some server shopping at the times you wish to play.

Some servers might have more players online then others do at your preffered play times.

    Greetings,

    Ortahr.

I add my post here in because I was a former EQ2 player as well. But since this game was gone f2p I have some questions.

    1. Some stuff (not counting the newest expansions appears to have to be paid separately even when going gold membership. Is this true? I have noticed a race named *trueblood" (or how that is called in english because my EQ2 is running in german language) and some other stuff needs to be paid separately as well in addition of expansions and monthly fees.

    2. I can remember that sometime a platinum membership had existed which some addititonal goodies. Is this gone?

    3. Assume going gold to unlock the classes and races and create a such combination which is not available and then go back to silver. Will such created characters still be available for play?

    4. And what is if you play silver or bronze membership and unlock some stuff for SC and later go gold. What will happens with the SC you did already spent on such stuff? And what happens if you return silver or bronze membership? Will the stuff you did unlocked earlier before going gold still stay unlocked?

Final Fantasy XI is probably your best bet for a group centric mmorpg, unless you do not mind getting back into EQ1
