ArcheAge Game Video  <<<  clicky

Seriously, back in the day, this was the direction many of us thought this genre would go.   It would be an online persistent "world"...emphasis on world.    The developers would give us players the means and the ability to shape that world.   Yes that includes smatterings of themepark game play, but the real draw to the game is all the other things players can do besides just whack-moles 24/7.    This will be the first true MMORPG since UO.

Ok, now they're on to something.

If they can have a decent drop rate...

If they can make the difficulty level scalable per amount of players in game...

If they can make an option to limit the amount of player and create solo games per easy , moderate and difficulty levels ...

If they can expand with optional download without detracting from the original design ...

Then ..and only then, ...yes Virginia ..there is a Santa Claus.

Short of that, same story different day and they're shorsightedness will not hide the fact that all they are interested in is $$$$$$

Great video - really look forward to the amount of freedom and immersion in a world that feels REAL that ArcheAge seems to offer.

I'm still skeptical of the combat system being fun, as well as questing quality at this point but we shall see.

EQ was my first MMO and no i never thought genre would go this way because i never mixed sandbox with themepark. It is like mixing art house cinema with commercial and criticising it only because all movies are not like Citizen Kane.

Two different genre for two different audience. I am perfectly happy with how themepark has evolved over the years and now it is time for Sandbox to flex some muscles. But considering the past and success of asian titles in west i really doubt it is even going to make a ripple in gaming world.

It certainly has that potential for me. I'd much rather play a game like this, with ambiance and atmosphere, with a world around me, with dynamic weather that affects crops, etc.. with day/night cycles, with the ability to exist as something or someone other than the main hero in some linear storyline, with a community and economy  that is dependant upon each other... yes, I'd much rather play a MMORPG like this.

I really love this mmo, I just don't think it will be a roaring success due to the massive system req's it will need to run smoothly.

If i've still got cash to spare for a £3-400 upgrade on my 4 year old system when this launches then maybe I'll give it a shot....recession permitting!

Looks good and ArchAge is firmly on my "want to play" list, but we will see, i hope it will not be just another disapointment.

I agree with the OP... this is exactly the way I thought MMO's would go after UO. WoW was increadablele when it came out but mainly it was because it looked so much better than anything else at the time (all you had was UO which was 2D... and EQ which had graphics that looked like it came straight out of king's quest) and the world was so enourmous. You knew that most of the freedom you had back in UO was gone but its didnt matter at the time cause I was so blown away. Then after that wore off I kept playing because everyone I knew was playing... and it was fun to play with friends even if the game was super limited. Somehow that Idea of "i guess ill play this because everyone else is" got tuned into... this is the only type of MMO people like. Personally I think the genre should split... I think that games like Wow, SWTOR, and other should be labled as MMORPG's and UO, eve, archage style should be called MMOW's or something for Massive Multiplayer Online World... that way we can know if a company is deceloping just another lobby game or an actually online world

It will be a resource hog atleast if you want to run it on high.  I had planned on building me another gaming PC, but i think im going to hold off on that now until AA gets closer to an NA release, or until I figure out how to get into the korean game.

Looking forward to the game but like every MMO sandbox game I expect crap.

The game looks interesting. I'll keep an eye out for more fleshed out details on this game as it's further into it's development.

Your fanaticism, and the apparent cockiness of the developers is a turn-off though. At least, for me it is. You could've left out "This will be the first true MMORPG since UO." Now I feel butthurt because, clearly, none of the MMORPG's I thought I was playing and/or looking forward to are "true".

With Jake Song involved, and being a big fan of the Lineage franchise myself... that alone makes this an interesting title to me.

I'm the same with game developers as I am with book authors... I tend to follow my favorites through whatever they do.

That said, given the nature of the game and what they're looking to achieve with it - assuming they can pull it off and stay the course (ie. don't cave into pressure to make it "more linear", "faster progression", etc)... it could definitely end up being something special.

Also... that is some of the best use of the Cryengine I've ever seen.

Honeslty... the only thing i would change from ArcheAge is the combat.

I would literally kill for a game like ArcheAge with Tera's combat.

But i kinda understand, this is more of a "serious" MMO where combat isn't all that matters.

Sadly, the majority of mmo gamers are too caught up in combat mechanics to get the point of this game. Its all about esport and class balance these days. A gem like this will be lost on a generation of fraggers :(

Seems really fun and amazing but the combat seems laggy and clunky even in their bloody trailer.

Yes it is closed beta but I seriously doubt that this game will have a perfect combat respoivness when you are in a pvp fight, let alone in those castle sieges.

Maybe the sandbox world alone will be enough but why oh why do they crave for grafic instead of a fluid combat ??

Because combat does NOT make a game?

It might do for games like TERA where combat is well..the ONLY feature to exist.

Now Archeage will attract pvp crowd obviously due to nature of the game, but the overall sandboxyness is NOT defined by ganking people, despite what majority of "indie sandbox" developers seem to think.

Thanks for posting this video Teala, I hadn't seen it yet. Every time I watch another one of these clips, it makes me more excited to see that this project is really growing legs, and becoming a reality more than just a rumor. What I love the most in this particular video is the way they talk about the generations of MMO's. The first generation was ultimate freedom without any rules or guidelines, so in the second generation we've focused heavily upon graphical improvement and creating more structured gameplay. In turn, the third generation is improving upon both of these types of games, to provide an experience that still gives players the freedom to shape or change the world, but provides the same themepark elements that so many in the genre have come to call standard MMO features: quests, dungeon runs, boss fights, etc.

Personally, I think this is pure genius. I'll remain pleasantly skeptical until I actually get to witness AA first hand, but I love the way their devs talk about their game, and about how their ultimate goal is to create "happiness with heart and soul". Brilliant.

Combat almost alone make the game ;p

In Archages case I belive they put more effort in making a graphics-game instead of a good combat system.

Just look at Swtor, even with its great amount of good qualities, alot of players think it will sink fast with their current combat system. (not everyones opinion offcourse)

My personal opinion is that in a great mmorpg, combat only plays a small but equal role to many other aspects.

Only problem I have with this is the combat looks bland and boring like world of warcraft etc. Other than that it looks and sounds great if they can pull it off and not make it a total korean grinder. Was kinda hoping fo rsomething more akin to tera or something more realtime insted of the click to target then everything auto homes in on the target. The animations also look clunky and robotic, I know this is one aspect of the game, but most mmo's won't survive without decent combat. Combat here looks like typical wow fare, which is totally bland and boring now a days.

Being a pessimist is a win-win pattern of thinking. If you're a pessimist (I'll admit that I am!) you're either:

    A. Proven right (if something bad happens)

    or

    B. Pleasantly surprised (if something good happens)

Either way, you can't lose! Try it out sometime!

They talk in the video like they are trying to sell it but yet there is no release date or even worst no word if this game will see NA.

Other then that it looks a lot like Aion but has all the features Aion failed to get in game so far, and also main feature of all big seamless world not instanced little maps with teleports in them. If this game ever releases in NA I'm defently buying it.
