imageGame of the Year: Star Wars: The Old Republic

OMG this game just launched! How can we possibly rate this the game of the year! We must be paid off! Adhgdjhgdudbjh! The fact is, this was a hard one. RIFT launched as a staff favorite in March, but it's both the freshness of SWTOR's launch and the fact that MMO fans have been going nuts over this game for years that combine to make this our Game of the Year. Plus, ya know, it's kinda fun.

  • swtor getting game of the year is a joke imho. mad amounts of accounts non playable/non downloadable, still no combat log, flashpoints unplayable/broken, battle grounds all mashed up into one level (with newbs having no abilities), can't even pick what freekin battle ground you want, UI is still jacked up, countless bugs, guilds options are still a joke, faction 3:1 faction balance, laughable character creation options, lifeless cities, AH UI is awful, etc...

rift did have a great launch though. good job so far trion.

Most Anticipated for 2012: GW2. that's a no brainier. i wouldn't sell archeage, and the secret world short. they obviously don't deserve the title, but it think they may be strong contenders in 2012.

I have a feeling they'll regret jumping on that bandwagon. It's too early to pour generous helpings of praise on SWTOR.

So in order to get game of the year you just have to launch at the end of December I guess :/

And here i thought 30mins to an hour was enough time to declare a game rubbish? Seems to be the popular opinion around here anyway.

Should of been Rift, even though I quit playing it with months of paid time still on the account.

Swtor just came out, and usually anything launching this late is considered a next year product.

Guess it doesn't matter, just think they kind of screwed Rift a little.  Wasn't my thing, but they are doing decent, and adding content decently fast it seems.

let us be honest, an MMO cannot be named "game of the year" in this little amount of time. if it was a single player game, sure. but MMO games are far more complicated and have a lot more variables at play

The game just came out, that's a bit ridiculous to name it game of the year when you are just in the beginning of learning what is great and what is not so great about it. Any game getting that title as soon as it releases sounds more like someone was paid off.

No surprise and it deserves all the praise and awards. Also nice to see people grumbling, just makes all the awards worth it ;)

You left out a part:  Loads of launch content and an incredibly fun, popular game.  It may be too early to give it game of the year due to the fact it won't be able to be fully judged until maybe 6 months down the road, but it's a hell of a fun game and tons of people love it.

In case you don´t see the story in it: They rated it higher than Rift because ToR is newer and people were waiting years for it. Plus it is kinda fun.

If we're really being honest, how important is the award in question? On top of that name any game and there will be a reason it "shouldn't be Game of the Year". Rift? Pop drop... Uncharted 3? Ps3 exclusive (not inclusive enough). Skyrim? Bugs, PS3 game-breaking isssues.. Etc...

As for your reasoning, Game of the year awards are more about what made the biggest splash on the scene, they feel that game was TOR...

I agree. And, that's a total of 4 awards for ToR so far. Not bad for a trash game right? :-)

Oh wow 4 awards you say.  impressive considering ALL the competion Tor had for 2011......face palm

Any gaming award is a great accomplishment. How many national championships did the bulls win against no competition? It's still a national championship.

Even though I like SWTOR, you gotta give the GOTY award to Skryim. Did they even think about this award?

    And that downplays awards how?

Puts it in perspective don't you think.   It was upagainst Rift, a few f2p's and indy games.....woot  big achivement but hardly something to boast about.

And how about all the years they did have competition? It showed that they were the real deal in the first place. SWTOR has not had that chance yet. So minus 1 facepalm.

    BOOYAKA!
