Finally, a game that has kept my interest, immersed me, and got my blood stirring. (Somewhat)
Wonderful graphics; player models don't really bother me.
Intimidating, ruthless and hence almost realistic world.
Missions made by players, thus actually having a purpose, and thus giving me motivation to do them.
Major factions that are player dependent, and influenced.
Politics.
Gameplay that isn't split between RPers and Non RPers, but instead blends the two together without force.
And yet where ever I go, I see posts hastily typed up by confused neanderthals bellowing: "OMG I WAS PKED! WAT AM I SAPPOSED TO DO?? THIS GAME SUCKS"
They have not been handed a 'training dagger', been bored to death by NPCs, told exactly how many rats to kill, how many apples to collect, and how much number crunching and time wasting is required to make them X many times better than the next man. And so they bash the game. It's that simple.
This game offers some originality, depth, and gameplay with purpose and I highly recommend it to everyone amidst all of those who do not possess the intellience or patience to appreciate it's virtues.
Game on FoM; it crashes, lags, has gankers and immature players, thrusts newbies into the deep end, lacks helpful veterans... And yet it has sparked my interest more than EQ2, AC2, WoW, DaoC have combined.

I agree completely; having closed my WoW account recently, I thought I'd finally jump in the FoMk open beta and give it a shot. I have been waiting for this game for a long time; although, it is not exactly the game I was hoping it would be. My first run into the game, I was killed at a merchant terminal before I could purchase a decent weapon, armor, etc. It was great. The person was arrested and I found myself back in the hospital in the cloning tube. I knew there was real danger in the world and that I had to be cautious if I wanted to survive/prosper. The importance of surrounding yourself with allies became immediately apparent. This game has a lot of potential, we just need more people willing to make the plunge. My in-game name is Gem Banter [GoM], look me up if you get a chance.

I agree.
This game is what players sorely needed. But I disagree with the lack of veterans. I can't talk for most factions, but on CMG, LED, FDC, BoS, and EC I know there are great veterans allmost allways on, and allmost allways willing to help.
I've played most of the 'big' MMO's, and am pretty excited for this one. It just recently came to my attention, alas the day I downloaded the beta client, it had just been taken down for some major engine upgrades, so I have not been able to experience the game yet.
DOwntime has now been extended for an unstated period of time, and I'm ok with that. I am, however, bothered by going to their forums and having a hard time finding good chat about the game and info when most people there are just bitching about the downtime and being betrayed by devs. Is that a joke? Surely they understand the point of a BETA test? I am hoping that is not very great of an indicator of how the player base is in the game as a whole. Can you enlighten me?
I am looking forward to the game coming back online - it sounds quite challenging!
The players who are posting during the downtime are very new, and judging by their comments, not very experienced in beta tests.
I have played since the start of open beta and find Face of Mankind to be both deeply flawed and strangely compelling.
To give credit where it is due the development team is very small (less than 15 people). They do listen to player input which is why they are upgrading the graphics engine in mid-beta which is more than some larger companies would do. Speaking as a programmer changing the graphic engine in the middle of testing is like changing the engine of a car while it is running.
I hope to see you out in the world of mankind when it returns. There should be some dramatic improvements in graphics, gameplay and fun over the next few months.
I have alot of respect for devs that actually do listen to the player-base. It annoys me even more when players flame out of impatience and just general ridiculousness when those guys are giving players something that most other MMO's I know of would never dream implementing a new game engine.
I hope the transition goes well enough, but there are always going to be some amount of issues... I just hope enough players make themselves useful in testing instead of bitching too much. Makes me even more eager to try the game quite frankly.
I'm a veteran, i "died" because i need a break, because the LED ladder is corrupt, that needs to be fixed, and it is bullsh*t, a new person comes by the LED and sucks up gets rank 5 by his third day then goes around ganking, it has happened 3 times and they didn't do nothing about it. Then when they finaly did something about it i laughed in their face "i told you".
Do not join LED at the time being.
I have been in this game since about two days after the open beta started and I will be there in retail. It is one of the greatest games ever made and is role playing at its very best.
GoM rule Baby!!!!!
The LED by its nature and amount of responsibility (law enforcement) is difficult and bureaucratic. But people find the challenge in the job fun and rewarding.
Plus, ganking has gone down alot since now everything is very diplomatic, where even a death of a Rank1 can lead to war between two heated factions. Ganking can also cause reprisals if they are in a close knit clan or faction.
Oh, and we're updating our graphics engine too.

I spent a good deal of time reading as much game info on FoM as i could find and it sounds very ambitious and also beyond the scope of a small developer. You pour scorn on the nad holding of games like WOW but its like comparing a blockbuster movie with a student project shot on 16mm.
From the little i have seen on FoM it looks like a great concept implemented without budget and although i wish it well, MMORP dont survive on a thousand hardcore players for very long. Lets hope they get bought by a company with deeper pockets to expand the idea into a game that has all the hand holding and polish otherwise it just another missed opotunuity.
