I wrote a thread earlier similar to this one, but it had a different question, and that was what side to you plan to be. The story seemed to fit here as well though...
I read on the Roma Victor site that you could be anything, and everything if you wanted to... But you wouldn't be able to excel at anything like that. But lets say you were a merchant or crafter or whatever, would you be totally worthless in combat, or perhaps under the real time combat system, you could score a lucky blow with your skinning knife to the eye socket of a raider, killing him instantly.
Let's begin the hypothetical situation -
Excellent work! A fine batch of ale, hurry and load the carts. Pack in as much as you can. Get to work loading up those sets of armor and swords so we can be off.
Five carts, loaded and ready to move out to the city for some trading... <snaps the whip>
We've spotted a caravan coming this way, two miles down the road.
Good, lets set up the ambush here at the bridge, four men on the west bank, six men on the east bank. Stay down.
Here they come, everyone ready... CHARGE! The four men on the west bank spring out, disabling the lead cart and slaughtering the driver. The six men disable the rear cart and kill the driver and his passenger... The remaining three carts are now trapped on the bridge with no where to go. The raiders move from cart to cart, cutting, slicing, smashing... The merchants and their families are slaughtered like cattle, all but one who jumped into the river. Suffering no losses in the battle other than a bruised rib to the lead man caused by an angry horse kick, the ambushers drive their carts to their city to count and divide the spoils.
The lengthy story is just to show my imagined worry. I just want to hear what people have to say and think on the matter. I don't want to be the guy ambushed and burned alive on the bridge because it's impossible to win a fight as a crafter against a battle hardened frontline fighter.
One dead man, a tragedy. One-million dead men, a statistic.

This is not only possible, but highly probable. On the roads will be many player and npc bandits, if your a merchant and need to travel( you will, you cant carry 100000 things like in other mmorpgs, and cant sell a vendor 300 shirts at once) you will have to have some sort of protection. If you are ambushed and killed, they can take everything.
these " policed" areas are very few and far between compared to how large the world is... 95% of the world will be basically free pvp where you better be prepared.

Think you have what it takes to take the 'Oath of the legion' and become a true soldier of Rome?
Service guarantees citizenship!
Now thats what im talking about!
Except my merchant convoy is going to have a covered wagon in it, with hidden well armed mercenary soldiers, and im going to be on a charriot, and ill RUN YOUR BUTT DOWN AND SLICE AND DICE YOU UP WITH MY RIMS!
And your trip through the afterlife is going to take you a week in realtime, because of all the thievery and murder you practiced. If you kill me, phfft, ill spend 5 minutes in the afterlife. POP, back on the old family farm.
I LOVE IT!
A gank-free game, where thievery and murder is for keeps and could actually be profitable. No mindless killing because your borred out of your skull.
In America I have bad teeth. If I lived in England my teeth would be perfect.
Seabass is right. If you kill any member of a guild, you are placed on their hit list, also every member of that guild within the local region will be informed of the murder. In other words, you kill that trader and anyone of his guild mates that's in the immediate area are going to come running. Doesn't leave alot of time to check that caravan for valuables. I also recall reading that guilds who have alliances share their hitlists. So lets say that trader was part of a well connected guild that is alligned with 3 other major guilds...I don't want to be in your sandals.
