Guild Wars 2: The Hall of Monuments

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

While old news to some, the thought of the Hall of Monuments and its place in the Guild Wars 2 universe intrigues us. See why we think the Hall of Monuments will be simply marvelous and then leave us your thoughts in the comments.

Guild Wars 2’s Hall of Monuments should be a very integral part of the game for all players, new or old. Let me paint you a picture… There it stood before him, reaching high into the sky underneath a thin blanket of snow. The wind whispered ancient stories of honor and valor in his ear. The tales were well known, but where they true? The hero began to walk towards the massive building, the stories of his once great ancestor swirling through his mind. The anticipation became too great! His walk soon became a run. The cold numbness he felt seconds ago was gone, and with full speed he raced to the large doors. Through the great shadow the building cast across the snow the hero reached the doors. He pushed with all his might, forcing them to open and reveal their secrets. There before him, he saw the proof he had been searching for. He had found his ancestor’s Hall of Monuments!

You can find many good guides to easily reach 30 points which is enough to unlock all items. All that's left are some titles. Its doable in less than 3 months.

To prevent any rage from those who think they are at disadvantage because they didn't play gw1, you must remember that all rewards are purely cosmetical. Yes those armors and weapons have stats, but moderate ones, not better than any other equipment you will come across in gw2. This is to reward all gw1 players, because without them, there would be no gw2!

I guess if you are in a rush and even only interested in the first 30 points in HoM and not in playing GW1, it will obviously feel as a grind.

But 30 points is doable and not really a grind if you take your time to enjoy and explore the game. 50 points is definately a grind. Some of the titles that you will need for 50 points take very long to complete.

So how does the HoM (lore-wise) work with Sylvari characters?

All of my posts are either intelligent, thought provoking, funny, satirical, sarcastic or intentionally disrespectful. Take your pick.

I get banned in the forums for games I love, so lets see if I do better in the forums for games I hate.

My GW1 Ranger plans to retire from saving the world and join Ventari and Ronin at the Pale Tree in a life of quiet contemplation....  etc. etc....  and was eventually laid to rest near the base of the Tree.

Hmm...I havent played GW forever, I think I lasted through the first expansion I think...May have to check it out closer to launch.

I really hope they do the WvWvW zones correctly and make the zones have variation.

I've posted over at guildwars2guru that my GW1 elementalist went to sleep under the pale tree and 250 later a sylvari who likes hurling lightning bolts and setting things on fire was born.

I'll probably say my guardian is a decendant of my ritualist or my paragon.

At one of the conventions, this question was asked during a Q & A session. The reply was that the characters in GW2 aren't necessarily related by bloodline to the ones you had in GW1. In a sense they're simply 'gifts' bestowed on the next generation, sort of like we call those schmucks from the past our 'forefathers' even though the majority of us aren't actually related to them.

You remember that one time you got really, REAAALLY smashed next to the pale tree getting your ultimate boozehound title...? Yeah... don't ask, and just feel bad because that one unfortunate Sylvari ended up gaining memories of that rather awkward experience...

And yes, the Pale Tree was upset you never called back.

Most stuff needed for 30 points is just playing through all the campaigns. With the daily changing Zaishen Mission, you even get rewarded to do each and every mission again even if you already did it in normal mode or hard mode but without bonus etc.

Same goes for vanquishing, though this is definitely grind, especially Ascalon and some other areas, especially in EOTN. Best would be to get some friends and/or a guild with lots of members that still need/want to do that, too.

Compare dozens of hours looking to find each and every enemy alone to funny stuff that happens with friends. Like, one accidently stepping through the portal to the other area, meaning you have to start over. Well, ok, thats not so funny, at least not right that moment, but once some days passed..

Important is the order in which you do the stuff. It's way easier to clean everything when you already have most if not all cities and outposts because you completed the campaign, including alternative missions, then to start with it the first time ever you go there.

Also, as enemies tend to hide from you when you need them, cleaning leads to exploring, and once you've done all enemies, you can clear the rest of the fog (TexMod is really helpful. It's 3rd party, but condoned. Be sure to go to the official wiki or other trusted sources like gwguru or wartower (for German speaking people) to get it though.

Also, as you kill a lot of enemies, you can gain a lot of points towards the faction titles, especially if you also take the Zaishen Vanquish and/or bounty.

And as you need money for some titles like Sweet Tooth or Drunkard (unless you really want to grind, to find it yourself), doing the Zaishen stuff repeadetely is a good income.

Don't forget to take the story books with you when doing missions, another good income of gold and experience (those who want the survivor title the easy way, takke note. Just save them up and return them all at once).

A lot is gained if you know how to. Instead of relying on the unsteady income from PVP, which many do not want to play anyways, do the Zaishen Challenge and Zaishen Elite (pseudo pvp against bots), which gives you a more reliable source of income for the Zaishen Rank.

I'll wait to the day's end when the moon is high
And then I'll rise with the tide with a lust for life, I'll
Amass an army, and we'll harness a horde
And then we'll limp across the land until we stand at the shore

30 is actually pretty darn easy to reach, and easier if you have help.

You'll get 3 trophies for just finishing each campaign, as well as 1 trophy per campaign for its NM bonus missions. That there is six for the Honor set.

Right off the bat too, you get 3 free points just for linking accounts, then 2 points for just putting a statue in. Add in those other 5 and you hit "Five displayed", which will net you another 3 points for a full display. That's 8 points for some mostly simple work.

Next easiest to get, I would say, is either a toss up between at least 20 mini-pets and the heroes. Unded white pets can make up the bulk of it since you only 1 rare and 1 unique pet for the two non-number based ones. Miliage to get those will vary but there are still plenty of ways to get some. Worry about white mini's though, since the prices there will range from like... 1 platinum to 5-10plat, depending on the year (might be a bit off on prices for later years though). Don't worry about purple-named pets, you only need the green and yellow.

You can get a Green mini from a scavenging quest (its not too hard to solo for me so far, and I'm almost finished)

The yellows tend to come from events. The new year event is a great chance, since you can easily grind out the fortunes that can give you a celestial pet (yellow). Depending on your luck, you might get more than one too, which you can sell. That's another five points there once you get a unique, rare, and 18 other pets.

The hero/ranger-pet one can be just as easy, if not easier depending on you. You do need a group to take you into Underworld for the Black Widow spider, but the Black Moa can be found through a quest and the phoenix at the Factions end area. These guys will need to be lvled up to 20 before they can be displayed, but its not too hard if you do other things with them out (even dead they gain xp). Plus, they also count for the generic pet display.

That leaves the 25 heroes who you need to unlock their unique armor skins for. MOX comes with his already, so he can be displayed right off the bat. Each armor piece, going for the cheapest, is only about 4-5 plat each, and the only requirement to display them with the armor is to get up to the point you can "Craft" it, as well as getting them to lvl 20. Altogether, this last part will cost you roughly... 100platinum, which is rather nice and cheap.

This puts you at 21 points.

When you go for the armor points, don'g worry about the Kurz/Lux set or specially the Vabbian and Obsidian armor. Instead, aim for the Eye of the North armor sets, since they come about 5plat per piece cheaper than the rest, and the materials are on the cheaper end as well. If you want the unique-point armor, then best bet is definitely the kurz/lux set. Luxon tends to be cheaper than Kurzick to make as well for the most part too so if you can, make sure you got some Luxon love through Factions.

The reason I say avoid the Obsidian and Vabbian armor is, quite frankly, because they are the grindy sets. Obsidian being the worst culprit. The 105 ectos alone will cost upwards of about 600-1000 platinum alone. Vabbian isn't far behind on the price point either.

Also, never grab the helmet if you are just aiming to finish a set. You only need the chest, gloves, legs and boots to display it. So unless you are going to wear the helmet, never craft them.

That puts you at 25-26 points.

If you do the GW beyond content, and did finish a lot of the Eye of the North content, you'll easily have enough to get a couple of weapons. Destroyer weapons can be on the cheaper end, and you are guaranteed at least one Oppressors weapon just for doing War in Kryta. That is 3 points right there.

which means you have 28-29 points!

edit: Also make sure you nab story books too. They can be turned in for Exp and gold/plat (always useful), but several also add to rep. One of the easiest to probably finish would be

    http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/File:Young_Heroes_of_Tyria.png

You could turn in books to the Lux/Kurz faction until you hit 500k, which will let you display their trophies, then put the rest to Gordon Ecker. You'll likely need 25-30 books in all, but this will nab you the Kurz/Luxon trophy displays, as well as eternal survivor and a good chunk of platinum.

wanted to say a few things to everyone who didnt play the first GW. GW's armor and the way you get it is not like normal mmo's. armor doesnt really have to much to do with the game, well it does, just not like someone might think when comparing to other mmo's. it was not hard to get the gear with the best stats in the game. getting a few sets for all your chars is not hard. getting as many you want rly is not hard. you get a set, get the runes you want for the builds you will use and your set. max lvl can be done in just a few hours in GW as well. GW is not a game about gear grinding or lvling. its a game of skill and fun. its about exploring. about seing the awesome places in the game. and then its about pvp. not gear based pvp. when thinking about pvp in GW, its better to think about Magic the Gathering. Its not like a card game, its your build. its what skills you use together. its about messing with all classes together to see how skills can work together. its about making a build and testing it on other players. pvp is also about working together, not just working together, but Really Working Together.

GW is also a much more social game. not social game as in its a social style mmo, but the fact that people actualy have to talk to each other to get things done. the way the game is, just makes people want to talk. its not just the world chat group of people talking, but all the game.

what i really want to say is, (this is how --> I <-- feel) im afraid people are turning GW2 into a normal mmo by the things they say and by what ArenaNet can see people saying. by what people are expecting this game to be. GW is like no other mmo. GW isnt really an mmo at all. GW2 will be of course. but im afraid it will be like every other mmo. its not that a normal mmo is bad, its just that GW isnt like the others, its its own game and own world. and turning GW2 into the normal, will just be sad for me and it will kill the feel of GW. GW was my first big online game. after GW i played WoW, and then i wanted to see more. ive now played a huge list of mmo's and was able to see how GW is its own game, and its such an awesome game. if it changes into what people from other mmo's want it to be, it will kill an amazing title. GW is not like other mmo's. and if GW2 fallows what it was, it will be its own amazing game. and i want people to be ok with it turning into what GW is. just let it turn into its own and be awesome. forget everything about mmo's when talking about GW, because again, its not a normal mmo, it is its own. let it be its own game.

Yeah, thats why you can PVP and do all PVE with a group of 8 Rangers, 8 Mesmers or 8 Necromancers.

You are right that there is a dedicated healing profession (Monk). And Warriors can absorb the most dmg, but they lack the aggro management skills from other MMO's. There is no traditional tanking in GW. Shows even more in GW pvp.

Guild wars does have that... Are you sure you played the same game I did? although the tank and dps is where it blurs a bit but theres definitely still a need for dedicated healers especially in PvP.

I always hated dedicated healers always taking that last group slot im glad theyre tossing it in the garbage can for GW 2.

I think that he meant that they are not mandatory like in other MMO's. There is no need for a Monk or Warrior in any PVE in GW.

Well GW changed a lot but at launch you pretty much needed a monk in your group and your other option were henchman that  were weak and dumb as hell.(they still are) It changed since then but the trinity still is mandatory as most groups do have healing capabilites and tanking capabilites EX: Minion masters

Most PvP focused games if you notice dont actually care much about tanks they often have 1 heal 2 dps etc... so tanks were not mandatory either but healers always seem to be.

I'm happy to hear all the changes GW2 brings to the table it's been a while since i've been excited about a new release.

Getting 30 points is not easy. If you don't like the game and you just want to go for the 30 points, don't do it! Don't listen to those guys who tell you that it is easy and that you just need to follow guide x.

It will take you hundreds of hours to get to 30 and a lot of that is just grinding.

about the HoM rewards, please be reminded that these items and armor were chosen for *nostalgia* purposes, with just a few new items included.

so dont be surprised that you'll find items/armor ingame that will be much better looking than the HoM rewards.  some new GW1 players, who just started grinding for HoM points, may become disappointed and QQ at ANET for wasting all thier time for these shinies, when the new items are shinier.

for long time GW1 players, these items represent great memories of the original game: when the fellblade was at one time the most expensive sword, when we wanted so bad to snatch that fiery dragon sword from Rurik the 1st time we saw it in presearing, the fun involved in hunting down the black moa, the rare chimeric prism that was only available in preorder, the warhorn that looks like the Stormcaller... you get my meaning

i'm just afraid that some new players may not "get it " even thought they got it

Yes, monks used to be mandatory in GW. But now, both games can be compared in the way that you dont need a specific profession anymore for either healing or tanking. This is what the devs mean when getting rid of the holy trinity anyway. Not having to depend on a specific profession. You still need heals though.

In GW1 the exception is PVP if you want to create a balanced teambuild. Then you need monks yes. But there also a lot of other teambuilds that dont require a monk.
